I have several tattoos because I wanted to get them. And could afford it. If they want the surgery it harms none to let them get it. Please cite your sources. There is a mental illness common among transgender people called gender dysphoria, but that's not about them BEING transgender, but having to live with being transgender (which often leads to depression because of the way society (including you) treats them). Therefore you are hardly in a position to decide what is and is not a functioning brain.

These physical structures are neural pathways. Neural pathways are formed by behaviours and they can be grown by new behaviours. This is true of all people. Some neural pathways are maladaptive, resulting in mental illness. In this manner, a transsexual is no different from anyone else.

You obviously didn't read the article I provided and you still claim things you don't have any proof for. First of all: The article specifically mentioned that only the brain structures that are known to be characteristic to women and men were researched. It wasn't that these were just "malformed" or something, which a neurologist should be capable of identifying, but that they were completely different. Such a difference can't be explained by "hormonal changes" or "mental illness". And what is a mental illness in your mind anyway? As I said, using the definition you provided, a genius would be considered ill as well for having different brain patterns than is usual. Lying leads to a build-up of white neural matter out of the norm. Doesn't mean that it is a sign of mental illness either. Please define your terms and cite your sources.

No, the difference is that you claim that the different brain patterns themselves are the cause of the distress, that BEING transgender automatically means that you'll become depressed etc. But that's not what gender dysphoria actually is. There are transgenders who are fine with themselves and don't even want a full or even partial transition. They are still transgender and don't have a gender identity equal to their assigned gender. It becomes a problem if a person feels like they are "stuck" in their bodies and that society will never accept them for who they are. This is the cause of gender dysphoria and that can be treated with both therapy or (if they so choose) a transition. Also: You have no idea how transitions work if you think they are a "mutilation".

Well, you are not the one who decides whether it is necessary or not. As I've said before, not every transsexual thinks that they have to transition. They are the only ones who can and should decide that. You might think otherwise, but who the hell are you to judge that for them? I never could understand why people are such sticklers for conformity. If someone deviates from the norm (provided that the deviation is completely harmless), why should anyone care?

Some men are feminine. Some women are masculine. Some people are born with the physical sexes of the brain and the rest of the body not matching. Some people are attracted to people of the same sex. Some are attracted to both. Some don't care what sex/gender a person is, as long as they're fab. Some have no sexual-feelings whatsoever. Some dress funny. Some are Goths. Some are Flowerkids. Those fundie Christain bakers in Northern Ireland - via they losing their appeal in court last year - being legally forced to bake cakes for couples who happen to be of the same gender.

The only ones affected are bigots: they no longer having the right to discriminate against anyone not exactly like them.

Strange how my father told me about people with different lifestyles - in a calm, reasoned & non-bigoted way - when I was younger. It certainly didn't affect me. Still straight.

Just as any of my sisters have probably sat in a toilet cubicle next to someone who is a transgender woman, and it hasn't affected them in any way, even if they knew or not. And years before any of this malarkey by bigots such as Conservatroll here. Which reminds me...:

Pretty sure that you aren't dealing in good faith here, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

Gender dysphoria doesn't refer to being transgender: It's an umbrella term for the psychological problems associated with being forced to live as a gender that you do not identify with. You would very probably experience the same symptoms if society forced you to dress and act like a woman.

Secondly, I can support the right for people to live by the gender they choose without wanting to change my own gender: I was born male, I'm happy with being a man, and I have no reason to try and switch genders. That doesn't mean that I don't sympathize with someone who doesn't embrace the gender that they were assigned at birth. That's like saying that a meat eater can never understand why someone could be allergic to fish.

As for your argument about STDs, I need to remind you that the basic physical fact of male on male penetration is simply a better vector for infection. Straight women who regularly have anal sex are at the same risk of infection as male bottoms, simply because the tissue in your ass tears easier. Gay people who are monogamous or don't engage in anal sex have the same incidence of STDs as straight people, or lower(in the case of lesbians).
Finally, the incidence of STDs in the trans community can be directly attributed to the sheer number of transwomen who turn to prostitution because they are denied legitimate occupations due to attitudes like yours: They're essentially given the choice of accepting their assigned gender, or being denied actual jobs because of people like you.

As for the good Doctor's point about how "homos" are more likely to be in abusive relationships, kill themselves, and have STDs, does he have any studies on hand comparing rates of "homos" who have received acceptance growing up with those who tried conversion therapy?

Regarding transgenders, if conversion therapy worked, religious or otherwise, sex reassignment would be rare, as the recipients of said therapy would have no reason to try anything else. As it is, all it produces is basketcases every bit as self loathing as what the Doctor thinks all trans people are.

I'll probably get some flak for this, but I agree that sex reassignment isn't the best possible solution. If it's what works now, then by all means, but in the future, I feel treating the brain issues which lead to dysphoria would be more efficient at providing relief for the patients. Of course, I'm not going to judge someone for not waiting an unknown amount of years for a hypothetical treatment to be developed when they are in distress right now.

I would argue with you on this one, perhaps to some this could be a preferable treatment but people like me can not only achieve perfect unity with their bodies since ours are literally equipped with knowledge of what to do once the right hormones are introduced, we will also be indistinguishable from your standard cisfolk to the point where I can carry a child in my womb, which without the transition procedure would just remain dormant and I would in fact be sterile(yeah I know, cases like me are very few and far between even within the community, yet we exist and I believe we deserve to be heard as well). Moreover, for me it`s not the identity itself but it combines with the personal desire to look a very certain way, something forever denied to me without the procedure. So in short, I would never accept such an outcome which would leave my body in its previous, unacceptable state, though I understand there technically might be people who would prefer that, even if it is beyond me how they could.
