If this is your plan for getting killed for Jesus, you might try doing it in different places in the Middle East.

I'm tempted to say this isn't fundie, because it's a standard Christian tenet that if you die for Jesus you get an instant ticket to heaven. But only a fundie would seriously consider this.

But I wonder how serious Acts5:41 is. I notice they aren't making plans to move to the Middle East or other places where Christianity is outlawed even with a death sentence. I have a feeling that if they were handing out bibles on a street corner and the vice & virtue police approached them, they'd crap their pants.

I understand that you want to show your devotion to Jesus Christ, but there are plenty of ways to do so that don't involve anyone getting hurt. You can spend your life doing productive things -- wouldn't it be better to spend years doing the lord's work than to through those years away by dying early? Wouldn't that make Jesus happier? If you honestly hope to be killed for any reason, please seek professional help. I know that you probably won't read this, but if you do, or anyone with similar feelings does, I advise you sincerely to talk to someone -- your doctor, a psychiatrist, some sort of counsellor -- and seek professional help.

I might disagree with your religious beliefs, but that doesn't mean I want you dead. You deserve to live a full and fulfilling life, just like all other human beings. Just because I don't share your beliefs doesn't mean I'm wrong about everything or wish you ill. I'd rather have you alive and trying to convert me than dead. I don't know how to be more sincere in this.

Please, for your sake, for the sake of your loved ones, for the sake of your God, get professional help.

(And if you ignore this and absolutely must die for Jesus, I ask that when you do so -- and I hope you decide not to -- that you at least don't decide to take anyone with you and kill for Jesus as well).

The problem with comments like this, as well as claims of persecution is that American Fundies have no clue what real persecution and martyrdom entails. You say it because you think it's something noble to aspire to, but you're so comfortable here in the West with a lifestyle that most third-worlders would consider wealthy, that you can't even begin to really comprehend what suffering really is.

Further, why are you so willing to die for Jesus? It seems to me that I recall Jesus wanted you to do things for him, like take care of the poor, the sick, etc. Why aren't you concentrating on that instead of just "handing out bibles" in a country that's still 75% Christian already?

More proof that RR is really nothing more than a death cult. It's suicidal ideation masquerading as religious expression. What's more telling though is the fact that they do not jump at actual opportunities for genuine martrydom, but rather hang around on RR boards hoping for ephemeral future martyrdom to come to them.

Such opportunities for you to have have exactly that experience for yourself, why haven't you taken them? People on RR hoping to be martyred at some vague and uncertain time in the future are no differet from the emo kid who constantly threatens suicide for the attention it brings, but with no actual intention of commiting the act itself They beg for a martyrdom they know isn't coming so they can demonstrate how muh holier and more devout than those who they see as not being "true christians"

Not only that, but people like me are going to be even more determined to hand out as many Bibles as possible.

And that accomplishes what exactly? Handing out bibles is a poor way to convert people, but a good way to generate trash.

Actually, I am planning on going on a mission trip to Mexico this summer, so in fact I am putting my "money where my mouth is" and taking a stand for Christ in a potentially hostile climate. I am not suicidal. If God wants me to stay on earth for many more years to testify to his glory then I gladly well. If he wants me to give my life as a testimony than I am ok with that too, because I know I will be in eternity with Him.

you see Christians don't see it as pointless; our lives and our deaths both can be used to God's glory to testify to His power and goodness. An early Christian wrote that the blood of martyrs is the seed of the church, meaning that it inspires others to give their lives for Christ.

Here: When we're talking about putting your life on the line, you stupid little bint, we're talking about countries that are actually hostile to christianity. Like Iran, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, etc. Sure, Mexico isn't completely safe due to criminal cartels and the like, but it's official government is not hostile to your religion like those other countries.

As we have said before, put your money where your mouth is.

I'm going to Mexico with a church group and part of the work will involve helping with an orphanage in a border town, so yes, there will be charity work. I know it's not as dangerous as the middle-east, but that is not the point. I can't afford to travel to the middle-east now nad I have a family to take care of. I am trusting Jesus that this is the right move for me to make in my faith walk right now, and if something happens to me I know that I have a wonderful godly husband who will look after the kids and raise them in Christ until I see them again in heaven.

And I am not white. I'm a black woman. Is it so shocking to you that a black woman can be "middle class?"

Mexico. Wow. Really pushing the boat out there aren'tcha, sister?! Not exactly Iraq, Afghanistan or Libya, eh? Or, say, Haiti.

Oxfam (who I donate to on a regular basis), the Red Cross (and the Muslim equivalent - who work in conjunction with the Red Cross - the Red Crescent), Christian Aid and the Catholic equivalent CAFOD are already sending out aid to the latter, to help the Libyan refugees with food, clothing, blankets, tents, medicines etc for those seeking asylum (until the civil war is over) in Tunisia & Egypt.

The Christian organisations concerned don't proseltyse. Their mission: to give aid to their fellow human beings in need.

See you on that plane to Tripoli, dearie.

What's stopping you from volunteering your time & services to the relevant aid organisations then? All travel - even by air - would be provided free of charge (and many of the airlines who offer such travel facilities to the major aid organisations give these seats free to such; doing so is tax-deductible to the airlines). And certain countries' military (Navy, Air Force, Marines) fly out such aid workers too.

So go ahead. No excuses*.

*- Ever hear of Medecins Sans Frontieres? A volunteer organisation that goes wherever medical help is needed. Doctors, surgeons, nurses etc who give of their time, skills and expertise, to offer medical treatment to people who usually can't afford such. And all for free. Funded purely by donations. A purely secular organisation.

While I agree that focusing on charity alone is better than focusing on a combination of charity and proselytization (which, in turn, is much better than proselytization alone), I don't really see how you can complain about someone doing charity work in the wrong place.

If someone helps out the homeless at a local soup kitchen, we don't say that they shouldn't keep helping people at the soup kitchen because if they were really concerned about feeding the hungry, they'd be trying to feed people starving in Ethiopia.

Yeah, Mexico is a place where rich people go to vacation. But that doesn't mean that poverty isn't a problem in Mexico. Go to Tijuana sometime and look at the differences in wealth you see. Take a look at the Tijuana River. You know that raw sewage is dumped there because the waste processing plant isn't always large enough to handle the amount of sewage produced. And the crime rates there aren't exactly low either. It's not Afghanistan. But that doesn't mean the impoverished in Mexico don't deserve help. That doesn't mean that trying to help out people there is somehow no longer a good thing. Is it bad to give any money to charity because you didn't give all of your money to charity? This is getting ridiculous.

Surprise people, some people would end up getting in the way of actual efforts to help people in other parts of the world because they don't know what they are doing. If a volunteer isn't prepared to do working somewhere like Afghanistan or Haiti or Libya, there's a good chance they'll get in the way of people that can actually help. Not everyone can go to Afghanistan. If you speak Spanish but not Farsi, you'd probably end up being a lot more useful in Mexico, even though Afghanistan is worse off.

I don't think His4Life believes that God will simply provide everything and protect her family. If she did, then why would she even consider martyrdom as a possibility? Wouldn't God protect her life with the same certainty by extension? If God was willing to provide everything, she wouldn't be doing charity work at all because she wouldn't need to. Because God would have provided for the impoverished.

I can see people making the argument that this isn't following the Bible word for word. Yeah, it seems to go against the lilies of the field parable. But I don't know how His4Life interprets that or how literally she takes that.

Which is quite different from what Acts5:41 said: 'I hope I get killed for Jesus.' No argument there.

But His4Life originally said ' You go sister!' suggesting that she entirely agreed with the sentiment expressed by Acts5:41. So to me, she's changed her tune a little here.

Also, we can all talk about what we would be willing to do, but if we've never been in the situation where we were actually faced with doing it, how do we know what we would or wouldn't do? I mean, I'd like to believe I'd be willing to lay down my life if it meant saving a lot of other people, but if it came right down to it, if I really was put in that situation, would I really, really be willing to make that sacrifice?

I don't know. And unless I'm ever in that position, I won't ever know.

So all these people who say that they would die for Jesus, but have never been in a situation where they might actually be called upon to do it, are just posturing in my view.

Having gone and read back through the comments, I concede your point. His4Life has definitely changed her tune.

The whole "You go, sister!" thing is rather disturbing. Encouraging people for having suicidal thoughts is creepy and wrong.

The fact is, I can't tell is Acts5:41 is just posturing or is seriously suicidal. If Acts5:41 is just seriously suicidal, this whole culture of posturing could encouragement as seen in some of His4Life's comments could factor into people who deeply need mental help not getting it. In any other area of life, this sort of suicidal talk would not be encouraged. The whole sort of posturing attitude could lead to people not taking those who are suicidal seriously. And that scares me.

Also, His4life said "As for proof, I've offered you my testimony and that of others along with God's own word to you. If that's not enough, then you will have all of the proof you need in eternity. Enjoy having the devil's pliers up your butt for all of eternity, bitch." (I think this was mostly directed at Anon-e-moose. While I can see why His4Life might be upset at being compared to suicidal cults like Jonestown and Heaven's Gate, Anon-e-moose really has a point here. This is what happens when you don't take the threat of suicide or your religious beliefs seriously. If His4Life was offended by this, she should have considered why Anon-e-moose was making this comparison and realized how disturbing and dangerous this whole line of suicidal thought is rather than telling Anon-e-moose he was going to be tortured in hell. That was uncalled for.) After that sort of comment, you really can't try to claim to have the moral high ground.

So, yeah, I think that the criticism along the lines of "It's only Mexico," might be slightly misaimed still (if only because the two comments by His4Life I mentioned above are much more disturbing), but I definitely see where you're coming from. Thanks.
