Quote# 104219

This last blog is directed to the one hundred percent of those in society who oppose any attempt by the Christian Church to exert any influence in the public sphere.

You will fail. If you despise religion in general and/or Christianity in particular and you want to eradicate its influence from all realms of daily life…you will fail. Its been tried, and tried, and tried. You liberals and progressives really don’t study history very well. Yes, for over two millennia you have persecuted, tortured, and martyred multitudes of us. You have successfully marginalized Christian faith in many cultures. And lately you have even swayed most of the eighty-percenters who ordinarily don’t like involvement of any kind in church to join your ranks (the poor souls actually believe it when you tell them the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah had nothing to do with homosexuality, that when Jesus referred to eunuchs He was talking about homosexuals, and that gayness isn’t about sexuality but love).

Yet no matter how hard you try and how seemingly successful you appear in turning the tide of public sentiment your way about numerous issues…you just can’t seem to stifle and silence the faithful remnant of the living God (the twenty-percenters). Who would have guessed during the reigns of Lenin and Stalin in Communist Russia that Christians could not only survive but thrive? The same could be said of places like China and even Iraq! For that matter have you an answer for how in the world the Jewish people could reestablish themselves in their homeland after having been dispersed for the better part of two thousand years? Surrounded by people who have sworn never to rest until they are annihilated? Look on a map, hundred-percenter. Have you an explanation for how that tiny sliver of land and its people have held on despite being surrounded and outnumbered? When will you learn?

You may go on a tear and win battle after battle after battle. But you cannot win the war. You are not the first generation of liberals and progressives! Your critical mistake is thinking that once everyone sees your supposed superior logic they will either swoon or take flight. Your self-aggrandizement just doesn’t know what to do with itself when the twenty-percenter is neither impressed by your argument nor afraid of your loathing. Our faith is stout. Our resolve is firm.

This blog may sound harsh and may be interpreted as the rantings of a mean-spirited evangelical Christian. Yet, while I intend to write with clarity I do not write also with spite or anger. I simply wish to inform you that even should you take full possession of all three branches of American government and pass laws in all 50 states criminalizing everything conservative or Christian the twenty-percenters would still be a vocal thorn in your side.

"I simply wish to inform you that even should you take full possession of all three branches of American government and pass laws in all 50 states criminalizing everything conservative or Christian the twenty-percenters would still be a vocal thorn in your side."

So this entire rant boils down to "I know we're losing but we intend to make a lot of noise while we go down the plughole of history".

Now, replace all mentions of anything Christianity-related with Islam's equivalent...

Of course, it goes without saying, whatever would give a liberal or progressive the impression that it it is even possible to quell the enthusiasm of someone who is mentally ill for Jesus. It is well known that their obsessiveness is second only to their relentlessness and their desire for unusual extremes.

Just another religitard with no concept whatsoever of actual history. Especially the part about us "persecuting, torturing and martyring multitudes of them". Apparently those Christian inquisitors acting on the orders of the church and judging biblical crimes based on biblical standards were somehow actually liberal atheists attacking the church. Somehow. Because total history fail.

++"You may go on a tear and win battle after battle after battle. But you cannot win the war."

It would appear that you do not understand how war works. If you lose too many of the battles -- especially in rapid succession -- you lose the war.

At least the "twenty-percenters" aren't calling themselves the moral majority any more.

So it is with the mentaly ill folks, they too seem unable to grasp the reality, no matter your arguments...

Also, by all means, scream, shout, knock yourself out, each and every right wing nutjob and religious whacko screaming at the top of their lungs makes everybody else see just how fucked up in the head you are.

Your resolve is firm!?!? Well, isn't that sweet. Too bad you're failing right down the line.

Someone once pointed out to me that, when asked if they want a more Christian nation, Americans will always say yes, until they realize that means no more contraceptives, no more protection under the law for woman, having to live under biblical precepts and so on. When it comes down to reality, forget it!

1) The Christians of Iraq are thriving and the Christians of the United States are persecuted. One question: how immensely myopic and selfish do you have to be to come out with that?
2) Leave the Jews out of this. Most Jews are fierce opponents of any interference in the separation between church and state.
3) Modern Israel was established by secular people who were mostly socialists. Israel is gay-friendly, has a liberal abortion policy and firm views on gun control. Stop treating it like your cargo cult fetish.
4) I think most liberals and progressives are very aware they're not in the first generation. There are others before them who won the end of slavery, the right to vote, the right to organize labor, the right to equal pay for equal work, the end to segregation, the end to the death penalty (in some jurisdictions). And however hard you try, those injustices are not coming back.
5) If 100% of people of those in society oppose any interference by the Church, you must be outside society, in which case, what are you doing meddling in others' affairs? And 100 + 20 = 120%. You need to think your case out a bit better, else you do just sound like another ranting, mean-spirited fundie.

Whenever I visit natural history museums I often look at the models of saber toothed tigers and wonder if I can see sadness in their symbolic glass eyes.

Your grandchildren will be ashamed of you, and their children will wonder why your beliefs ever existed.

@OHP: But those weren’t Christians, they were Catholics!

Oh but, we have the First Amendment on our side.

And someone can't understand the difference between keeping religion out of government and total banishment of religion from society. While I think the latter is a lofty goal (which should only be done willingly through education), I'll settle for the former because I know the latter is impossible at this time.

I consider the Founding Fathers, despite their failings, to be the first generation of American progressives. There were others who came before them but the U.S.A. didn't exist yet so...

The American government can't criminalize everything Christian and are not even trying to.

Liberals and secularists didn't torture Christians. Diocletian, the Roman Emperor who really got the persecution ball rolling, had them killed because he believed the gods were mad at Rome for allowing people within their midst to blaspheme them and say they don't exist. In other words, Diocletian would have made a great Christian conservative.

I challenge any Christian conservative to point out where I or any major secularists have advocated criminalizing beliefs just because we disagree with them. You cannot.

Which Christian church would that be? Lutheran, Methodist, Baptist, Wesleyan, Catholic, Mormon...etc...etc...etc...

Why does a group that is the majority whine about being persecuted?

Also the bible itself tells you Sodom and Gomorrah have nothing to do with homosexuality.

I'm not here to eradicate Christianity, I'm here to keep it out of government, just as I'm here to keep Judaism and Islam and Buddhism and Hinduism out of government.

Not because I have antipathy to Christianity in particular, but because I've read enough history to know where religious mergers with politics lead, and I'm glad America's free of sectarian violence.

"But you cannot win the war."

We've already won it. There will be some setbacks from time to time but those that don't see the hypocrisy and dishonesty of your philosophy are, literally, a dying breed.

Feel free to stomp your feet and hold your breath until you turn blue because it's not going to help any.

I replied to this.

""if so many people who have throughout the centuries felt the same way about the Bible thumpers as you do, why are we still here?"

Because we didn't believe in killing you all. Or wiping out your religion. OK, we didn't like it when you tried banning contraceptives, certain books or films or making kids pray to your god in schools regardless of whether or not they believed in him. But we still think that so long as you're not harming anyone else, you still have the right to your own lifestyle, as degenerate and perverted as it may appear to us.

Anyone who genuinely wished harm upon the 'Bible Thumpers' obviously did not think the same way as I do. Happy Churching."

I don't think they'll approve my comment, though.
