Our 17-year-old daughter's friend announced on Facebook that he has rejected God & is now practicing wicca. Is wicca considered part of the occult? We are very upset because our family has had problems with curses, etc. being placed on us by homosexual neighbors in the past. These had to be broken by a priest. We don't want to have to deal with anything like this ever again. Thank you for your help.

Your daughter's friend hasn't rejected God, he's rejected your stinky Demiurge....and Wicca is a peaceful religion that teaches "Harm None". The closest a Wiccan would get with curses is a "binding" spell.
And "Homosexual" is not synonymous with "Spell Caster/Witch/Sorcerer".
Why can't you be one of those more perfectly normal, sane, average, Moderate, Vatican II Catholics, the kind who are good Catholics who, even if they very much practicing, aren't frummy & insane?
Man, when I was a kid, the Catholics used to be more moderate & worldly and, while they did have some ultra-conservative rules involving birth control or whatever, didn't make a big to-do about it.
Then the 1990's came and the Fog of Frum from The Bay of Fundies started to leak in.....I blame EWTN!
Wicca has as it's primary (and only) rule 'Harm None'. If a curse is tossed at you - even a homosexual one - it isn't coming from the Wiccans. They believe in Karma and the Threefold Law, which says any energy you send out, for good or for evil, returns to you times three.
Is it occult? In a manner of speaking. Wicca falls under the label of 'Occult', just not in the way christians think. The energies raised have nothing to do with evil or your Satan.
I suggest reading up on this. Research leads to understanding, understanding leads to fewer irrational fears in regard to people different from yourselves.
It's simple; stop attacking homosexual neighbors, and they will stop putting curses on you!

I grew up surrounded by Catholics, and I find it really sad to see how much Catholicism has been infected by fundy ideas. I knew people who wore charms and amulets (which is what scapulars and saints' medals are,) but nobody would admit to believing in curses unless they were a recent immigrant. I guess now priests feel they have to give people what they want in order to stay in business, and if that means a few anti-demonic rites, so be it. 'Back in the day' a priest would have told you to go to confession, mass, and then see a psychiatrist.

Why should a homosexual neighbor put a curse on you unless you were a hate-filled homophobic bigot, in which case, the curse might well have come from God, since you certainly didn't love your neighbor like you were told.
Magic does not exist, it is nothing but superstition, a flaw of human psychology. Also, Wicca has nothing to do with the "witches" of the witch hunts, who were simply normal (Christian) women who fell victim to a mass hysteria that the authorities accepted. I'm voting Poe, simply because no priest can perform an exorcism on his own. He has to have explicit permission from his bishop. Even if there are a few whacky bishops out there, I doubt any bishop would want to go on record as having granted permission for a priest to break homosexual neighbors' curses.
