Quote# 113262

I am going to put this out there: Catholics are not Christians. Here's why.

*Neither a priest, a bishop, nor the pope himself, can absolve people of their sins. Only Jesus can do that.
*There is no purgatory. You cannot be prayed into heaven, or out of hell.
*You pray to God and Jesus, not Mary and Joseph. That's idolatry.
*Mary may be in heaven, but she was never sinless.
*There is no mediator between God and Jesus.

>*Mary may be in heaven, but she was never sinless.

What is the immaculate conception? I mean aside from complete bullshit like the rest of Christianity anyway.

Like your interpretation is any closer to the source material.

Sorry Matt - the Catholics were there first - that makes them the true xtians.

Martin Luther's hissy fit was just that. So - you are a heretic and are going to enjoy free diving in that burning lake.

Or - you can realize that the xtianity - all of it; catholic, protestant and any and everything in between; is a myth like many others.

Oxymoron's Razor

I'm surprised our resident Troll Jerry wasn't first post on this one to simultaneously agree with everything the poster said and then claim that said-same poster isn't really a Christian and is going to hell, as per his normal M.O.

Catholics are the original Christians. You're just a heretical offshoot.

Catholicism STARTED Christianity you stupid fuck.

* Priests, bishops, and the Pope are ordained by the Church, and speak for Jesus on Earth.
* There is also no heaven nor hell.
* You ask Mary and Joseph to speak to Jesus and God on your behalf.
* Mary was sinless enough to be chosen to be the Mother of Christ.
* There is no God nor Jesus.

Catholics were Christians long before the Protestants came to the table.
Or are you Orthodox Church Christian?

10/2/2015 5:38:17 AM

Mister Spak

You are not christian. Here's why.

You are not Catholic.

Doubting Thomas

*Neither a priest, a bishop, nor the pope himself, can absolve people of their sins. Only Jesus can do that.

According to the Catholic faith, priests absolve sins only by the power of God & Jesus working through them. And actually, I was taught that God already forgives your sins, penance was just a ritual celebrating it. But frankly as a young Catholic I always hated it.

*There is no purgatory. You cannot be prayed into heaven, or out of hell.
*You pray to God and Jesus, not Mary and Joseph. That's idolatry.
*Mary may be in heaven, but she was never sinless.
*There is no mediator between God and Jesus.

All just denominational differences in opinion and about as useful as arguing over how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. The fact, though, that Catholics worship Jesus as a personal savior means they are Christians.

This must be a profound and important argument. Fundies wrangle over which understanding of a badly translated book of bronze age fairytales is correct.

My Catholic grandmother (and some of my girlfriend's family) would like a few words with you. As would my Catholic Knight-Marshal.

But did you trademark the name "Christian"? Because they claimed it first, sorry, you are screwed, brand-wise. You'll have to call your religion something else.

1- There's all those Baptist preachers/pastors/telibangelists out of a job, then.

2- The likes of Creflo Dollar. 'Prosperity Gospel'. Protestant indulgences. NEXT!

3- Then what was the point of your 'God putting Mary in Le Club Pudding, then? Either she is a holy figure in Protestant Christianity too, as she was the Mother of God: Jesus, or your 'God' limits his 'Omnipotence' (because what was stopping him from merely thinking, and 'Poof!' Instant Jesus!), therefore he's not God, ergo he doesn't exist, and you're fucked.[/b]

...but then, the Protestant Buggars did exactly that: thus Proddys are Left-footers too; more so than Catholics, and what the likes of messrs. Luther, Kings Henry VIII & James I, and Oliver Cromwell did was all for naught.

Also, 'Touchdown Jesus' in Monroe, Ohio. What happened to that. Your argument is invalid.

4- Thus Jesus, and therefore God can never be sinless too. Abraham & Isaac: LYING. Hosea 13:16: Murder & Abortion. Joseph's betrothed, Mary: Adultery.

5- Therefore there's absolutely no fucking point in a religion which allows so much as Laity, never mind Preachers/Pastors.

6- ?????

7- ...and what does your church, and thus it's pastor/preacher do via suckering 'Tithes' from brainless dolls such as you, Matt Mason? PROFIT!

Spoken like someone who doesn't know Catholicism.

You don't understand Catholicism. And the Protestant religions wouldn't exist without Catholicism

I was a Catholic and I don't remember praying to Mary and certainly not to Joseph. What I do remember is that the church felt they were important figures in Jesus' life and should be acknowledged since God Himself chose them to be Jesus' earthly parents.

Also, I don't see a damn bit of difference between a minister, a pastor or a priest.

I think you get wronf some basic aspects of Catholic doctrine.

Mary may be in heaven, but she was never sinless.

That reminds me of an old joke:

The croud wants to stone the adultress to death. Jesus steps into the middle and says "let he who is without sin cast the first stone." Then a rock flies past him and hits the adultress in the head, dropping her to the ground, dead. Jesus turns around and says "oh come on mom, you stay out of this!

Neither a priest, a bishop, nor the pope himself, can absolve people of their sins. Only Jesus can do that.
Jesus delegated the power to "loose and bind" to Peter in Matthew 16:19 and 18:18. The RCC believes priestly authority flows from Peter in continuous "apostolic succession".

There is no purgatory. You cannot be prayed into heaven, or out of hell.
The RCC doesn't officially believe in Purgatory, though the belief was common enough in the past

*You pray to God and Jesus, not Mary and Joseph. That's idolatry.
Catholics don't pray to Mary. They ask Mary to "intercede" - pray for them to God.

*Mary may be in heaven, but she was never sinless.
Theoretically, only God knows that.

*There is no mediator between God and Jesus.
"Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him ..." [James 5:14]
"pray for us, that the word of the Lord may speed ahead and be honored ..." [2 Thessa. 3:1]
"Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you ..." [Matt. 5:44]
etc., etc.

To play devil's advocate (or rather, Catholics' advocate):

Priests, bishops, and the pope don't absolve anyone of their sins. They are witnesses. It is God that Catholics believe absolved them. You have misunderstood the role of the priest.

Purgatory is in 2 Maccabees. What's that? It's not IN your Bible? Well then, why did you allow heretics to remove it?

Catholics don't pray to Mary or Joseph. They ASK Mary to pray for them. You have been lied to by your fundie pastor.

If Mary's not sinless, how could Jesus who IS sinless (as Christians believe), have sprung from her?

"There is no mediator between God and Jesus". And Catholics agree. You misunderstand intercessory prayer.

Da Rat Bastid

There are two things for the OP, and for anyone who agrees with him that "Catholics aren't Christians" to consider carefully here:

1) If Catholics aren't Christians, then Christianity isn't even close to being the world's #1 religion. (No points for guessing which one would be.)

2) It was the Catholic Church that organized the various stories of the Bible into one unified anthology. If Catholics aren't Christians, what does that say about the integrity of the Christians' sacred book?

10/2/2015 1:09:21 PM

gimel

1) John, 20th chapter, 23rd verse;
2) purgatory only lasts until the Doomsday. Then there's only slvation or damnation;
3) you ask whoever you want to pray for you, living or dead;
4) she was, but let's agree to disagree here;
5) wait, what?

@Credence:
Immaculate conception is the idea that Mary was born without original sin.
