While it is in scripture that parents have a duty to discipline their children, and controversy besides as to whether the rod in question is literal, this is mental gymnastics of the highest level. The gluteus maximus didn't exist for the sake of caning; if I am not mistaken it was for the sake of sitting. Feel free to correct me on this, I could be wrong.
I myself was caned with a rod no thicker than a pencil - more an (East) Asian thing than a Christian one. I'm still okay, and in fact more than grateful my parents did.

Note to Sharon: Gluteal muscles are for the sake of standing and walking in upright posture, which is why the gluteus maximus is the most massive muscle in a human being. The fat padding towards the lower part of the human backside is what cushions the ischial bones in a seated posture, a function fulfilled in Old World monkeys by callosities.

The world has changed. Parents who spank their children on a regular basis often end up wondering much later why they rarely get visits at the nursing home and why their grown up children aren't around when they need them.

last time I made a comment like this, another commentater tried to debunk the "I was spanked and turned out fine" argument but I didn't know what he was trying to say.
I've heard tell - although I'm not a Biblical scholar by any stretch, so don't take my word for it - that the "rod" is supposed to be one of those shepherd's crooks with the, well, crook in it. Thus the intended use is not to belt the sheep upside the head with it (tempting as I'm sure that is on occasion) but to gently turn them aside from whatever stupid thing it is they're doing.
Anyway, this only reminds me of the line in Discworld about how different their not-Christianity might have turned out if the God had gone down the other side of the mountain and met a goat herder - "for sheep are stupid, and need to be driven; goats are intelligent, and need to be led ".
