Public schools should be abolished. They have failed to achieve what they were sold to the American public as (there are still great inequalities in education based on regional wealth) - and, as Thomas Paine wrote - "government is a punisher". All it can do is punish - no matter how noble the putative intent. So why do we punish our children and their parents?

You mean back in the late 18th century? Can you please quote "what they were sold to the American public as"?
Americans have been attending public schools for about nine generations, or more. What are you talking about?
@#2004761: Of course. That's the point, after all. An uneducated public will not question what the authorities tell it and is easily manipulated, allowing the fundamentalists to finally create a society where everyone is as stunted and ignorant as they are.
Public schools should be abolished.
The Conservative MPs/ministers - and member of royalty - who went to the public schools Eton, Harrow, Gordonstoun etc, would have something to say about that.
In Common Sense, Paine was specifically arguing against the British monarchy and their governance of the colonies. In Section IV Paine described some of the good stuff an independent America could do, such as paying down debt.
"(there are still great inequalities in education based on regional wealth)"
You're right! Let's plonk the Fortune 500 down in the rural South and West to bulk up state tax revenues!
there are still great inequalities in education based on regional wealth)
They're not based on regional wealth but on the choices made by state governments in funding the future of their children. New York spends nearly three times as much as Mississippi per student but only has twice the GDP per head. Stop blaming wealthier states and take some responsibility for your stupid decisions.
The less educated people are, the easier they are to control.
People who push for the abolition of public schooling are looking to indoctrinate those childrem whom they value while leaving ignorant the offspring of 'lesser' families.
It might be time for rational parents to form their own schools. It isn't fair they'll be taxed for a product like this - one made deliberately substandard by those fine and loving zealots who don't like to share even knowledge - only to have to pay again in the form of a another collective fee to ensure their own kids learn in an environment that prepares students to meet or exceed international educational standards.
The rate you morons are destroying public education, it won't be long before your new Christian nation of Dumbfuckistan is rated as the least intelligent nation on Earth. And then you morons will probably claim, like your brand new President, that everyone else is wrong because you're SMRT!
While you're doing that, the rest of the world will do most of the heavy lifting in terms of scientific advancement, and you'll probably find businesses increasing the rate at which they get out of the US. After all, despite what Repubs like to claim, an uneducated workforce isn't actually of much use, unless you just need raw labor.
Yes, we should raise a country of mindless Godbots who are qualified to do little more than flip burgers, dig ditches, and become professional bullet stoppers for the military industrial complex, while the privileged elite can actually afford to educate their children to become the next leaders. Sounds like a great plan.

Worked in the Dark Ages. Or so these idiots think.
"...there are still great inequalities in education based on regional wealth."
So, wouldn't abolishing public education simply make that even worse?
Hey! Don't drag Thomas Paine into your insanity!
Also; The majority of Americans reject your insanity and Trump's election has awakened a sleeping Progressive Giant!....

....IT'S NOT OVER!
The sad thing is, these "inequalities in education" is what the public school system was designed to level a bit, the rich will always have more options. You can track the failures in the system directly to Republican defunding, interference on curriculum and demonizing of education with the stupid religious stooges cheering it all on.
And it looks real bad for anyone who values knowledge over bullshit, with a Dominionist as VP and a secretary of education that insists on Christian schooling.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
