An Iowa state representative is under fire after saying women who miscarry after 20 weeks of pregnancy should be forced to carry their dead fetuses to term.
During a hearing Wednesday of Senate File 471, which would clear the way for a state ban on abortions after the 20-week mark, Republican Rep. Shannon Lundgren — the manager of 471 — faced a question from fellow Rep. John Forbes, a Democrat.
Noting that he has a daughter who is 20 weeks pregnant, Forbes asked that under the bill, would his daughter have to carry her child to term even if a doctor told her there was no longer a heartbeat.
"Is that good medicine?" Forbes wondered.
Lundgren's response:
"This bill wasn't written for the intent to protect or govern on the side of the woman. It was written to save babies' lives, giving the choice and being the voice of those babies...that don't have one. I understand what you're saying—this fetus, this baby, is not alive. I would concur that in that instance, if your daughter's life is not in danger, that yes, she would have to carry that baby."

How does that even make sense? And I would think carrying a dead fetus could impact your health. Your physical health, not just your mental health, which it almost certainly would.
I do know, however that sometimes doctors themselves don't want to perform an abortion even even the fetus is no longer viable. It happened when my mother had her miscarriage. The baby died, but her body didn't react to it and kept developing as usual. Her doctor refused to do anything about it, wanted to 'let nature' take its course. Finally my mother had to threaten to commit suicide before he would preform the procedure. Granted, that was 20 years ago, and I don't know of it was religious convictions or an unwillingness to do what he deemed a medically unnecessary procedure, but I have heard other anecdotes about women struggling with the same issue.
What the flying fistfuck? That makes no goddamned sense whatsoever! That isn't pro-life, the fetus is dead already! Of natural causes! What the FUCK would having the poor woman keep a rotting chunk of tissue in her body threatening her health and leaving whatever damage already done by her miscarriage untreated accomplish? There is no point to this but to make women suffer for denying a man a child even when that's not in her own hands. An act of God, so to speak.

Most countries already have some form of limit around weeks 18-21, after which only abortions for medical reasons are allowed. A dead fetus would be a medical reason, yes.
Her health will be in danger from carrying a dead fetus, so no, she shouldn't have to carry that fetus.

I agree totally, but the only sense I can make out of these idiots is that they've fully gotten on board the "all abortion is bad" train and don't think of the issue in anything but black & white when there are numerous shades of grey out there. I have no doubt they would refuse a woman to terminate a life threatening ectopic pregnancy, just because the religious right says that abortion is baby murder in each & every circumstance.

There was a case in Ireland years ago where a woman had a miscarriage and the body didn't expel the fetus on it's own. Because of the anti-abortion laws, the woman went into sepsis from carrying a dead fetus and died leaving behind a husband and children. This is what will happen to women in this scenario should this state representative get their way.

I'm not sure it's even about sex, as the same people tend to insist wives have sexual duties and shouldn't be able to say they have a headache. I think there's a very pointed agenda at work to convince people that if you're not increasing the population then you're holding all of humanity back and should face retribution. There's quotes all over this site with fundies saying there's never an excuse to not have children by the litter. There's the same sentiment in bashing the LGBT community, the same sentiment among racists though it's specific to themselves, misogynists that clearly view children as property also parrot the sentiment and incels who are incapable of loving anything but themselves and openly say they will whore their kids out or abandon them the moment they are born are still incredibly insistent that the point of their lives are to put children on the Earth. Even when nobody who insists that more children is a good thing has any intention of improving those kids' odds of surviving to adulthood they will remain adamant in their belief that you should have them regardless of your own opinion.

Those saying "the baby is already dead!" are missing the point. This is to try to prevent women from causing a miscarriage to basically give themselves an abortion. Like I said, twisted, but to the fundie, it makes perfect sense. As abortion becomes increasingly restrictive, people might take measures like this.
