One would wonder if these depictions of God as "evil" were so damaging, why would they be in the Bible in the first place? Shouldn't they have edited them out to make God look good? They didn't for one reason: God will fight for you. If you are ever in trouble, God will help you fight your way out if you love Him. The Israelites loved God, so when they had to go to war, God helped and fought for them.

No, the depictions of an "evil" god in the bible reflect the bible writers' bronze age idea of what a god should be.
Riiiight. And, in Num 31, he had his minions kill everyone except the virgins, who were given over to the soldiers to rape, God did this for one reason, he's a evil pile of shit.
I agree with whitewater. If the Bible came into existence today, rather than what, some 1500+ years ago, it would be utterly ridiculed and mostly ignored.

i must disagree with whitewater, if the bible were freshly published today, it would be banned by the same fundies who "adhere" to it. Do they realize how much genocide, incest, rape, and political intrigue is in that book?

this just brought up a funny running joke i have with my significant other. Although, Im a firm believer in women's rights and equality, just to annoy her, I would scour the bible looking for chauvinistic quotes, quote it to her, and then say "God said so, it's right there!"
Explanation 1): bronze-age cattle raiders had slightly different appreciation for human life, freedom, and justice than we do now.
Explanation 2): the Bible is the work of Satan, who wanted to make God look bad. He did.
