Quote# 128232

Where’s the common sense these days? If I say I feel like a ham sandwich, does that entitle me to get on the menu of a non-kosher deli? The end result of this cultural phenomenon – the absolute celebration of transgenderism – is twisting the minds and hearts of young people across the country. It is not only causing gender confusion, it is causing mass cultural disorientation and societal irrationality.

Well, if I want a ham sandwich, a deli, kosher or not, isn't likely to be my first choice to prepare it. I have, however, eaten at delis that do serve ham.

What has that got to do with transgenders? To repeat what's been said many times already, unless you know a transgender while s/he is transitioning, you're not likely to know an individual is trans. The only "celebration" of transgenders I've seen is accepting them as regular people, and most young people have no problem with that. It almost certainly doesn't affect you, so why do you have a problem with accepting them?

Common sense should have told you that that was an invalid analogy.

I don't know, Joseph, has a team of psychologists, psychiatrists, and neurobiologists determined that you are mentally and physically predisposed to consider yourself to be a ham sandwich?

If Joseph Farah claims to be not part of this world, does this entitle the US government to deport him by blasting him into space?

Damn. Now I want a kosher ham sanny.

Buy your own tin of ham - from a non-Kosher store - and make sandwiches out of that. It's common sense. Cheaper, too.

Analogy annihilated.

Well, that's a pretty awful analogy. Let's try another. What if you had a disease or defect...say, a missing limb, or leprosy for example. How would you feel if your family and friends and society in general had absolutely no interest in getting you the appropriate medical help, but wanted you to just give up your public life and live in the attic because you might EMBARRASS them? And churches preached against people with a defect because nobody wants to sit next to a leper?

Now do you see why your position is so wrong? The cost to society of putting up with lepers or paraplegics or transgenders is just a tiny bit of inconvenience and a tiny bit of embarrassment ("OMG, what if I call him her, or call her him, or call him Steve when he is now Sheila!") which can be alleviated with a little education and a little maturity on both sides. But the cost to the leper or the paraplegic or the transgender person is absolute if society closes its doors against an individual. The scales are not evenly balanced. And just as society has matured enough to put in wheel chair ramps for the afflicted, so can we all mature enough to accept a gender change.

@Kanna:

I wish it were that easy. There is no amount of education that can help a person who refuses to learn.

Mass cultural disorientation and societal irrationality sure sound scary but I'd bet that you couldn't give any actual examples beyond "I find it icky"

When young people across the country start identifying as ham sandwiches, then I'll admit you have a good point. Until then, fuck off, bigot.

It is not only causing gender confusion, it is causing mass cultural disorientation and societal irrationality.

if you could be a little more specific..?

"Where’s the common sense these days?"

Certainly not with far right or religious right

"If I say I feel like a ham sandwich, does that entitle me to get on the menu of a non-kosher deli?"

No but if you can afford it you can pay for it all

"The end result of this cultural phenomenon – the absolute celebration of transgenderism – is twisting the minds and hearts of young people across the country"

Because accepting people for who they are is terrible

" It is not only causing gender confusion, it is causing mass cultural disorientation and societal irrationality.
"

Then you must absolutely despise religion

"The end result of this cultural phenomenon – the absolute celebration of transgenderism – is twisting the minds and hearts of young people across the country. It is not only causing gender confusion, it is causing mass cultural disorientation and societal irrationality."

Fundies already have: "'Gays' were BORN opposite-gender oriented, that is, normal, just like everyone else! They just at some point in their lives CHOSE to stick to same-gender sex partners!!"

This indicates they also have: "'Transgenders' were BORN 'cis-gender' that is, normal, just like everyone else! They just at some point in their lives CHOSE to start regarding themselves as 'born in the wrong body!!'"

"societal irrationality."

Like you're one to talk about "societal irrationality."
