President Donald Trump has just announced a total ban on transgender service members in the U.S. military. Via Twitter, the Commander-in-Chief, with absolutely no warning, said:

"After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you."

Estimates vary, but there are up to about 10,000 transgender people honorably serving in the U.S. military, as NCRM reported earlier this month. A policy accommodating new trans service members was scheduled to go into effect July 1, but at the last minute, Secretary of Defense James Mattis postponed the change for another six months.

"We will use this additional time to evaluate more carefully the impact of such accessions on readiness and lethality," Mattis wrote, announcing the delay. He added, "this action in no way presupposes the outcome of the review."

If Trump's tweets are to be taken verbatim, the military would in theory discharge about 10,000 Americans. Expect legal challenges to the new policy soon.

Vice President Mike Pence, who has been working for the ban, is likely the main reason for Trump's announcement.

Foreign Policy magazine Tuesday afternoon reported Pence "and his staff have been working quietly to get Congress to roll back the Defense Department’s year-old policy covering medical procedures for transitioning service members, according to sources."

Family Research Council's President Tony Perkins has also been working to bar transgender service members.

Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory

That does not bode well at all...

Fortunately, tweets are not official laws. More importantly, Defense Secretary Mattis, who has apparently been working on trans military laws for awhile and also had his nice relaxing vacation interrupted by this awful decision, was not happy to hear this and much of the White House's staff are refusing to follow through on this declaration until Mattis comes back from his vacation. He will likely refuse to go along with it and stick to his 6 month delay, and firing Mattis would just hit Trump with poorer publicity than the Comey firing.

Congress is also against this in a bipartisan manner, and according to civil rights law, laws barring people from the military are only allowable if there is a strong congressional desire for them. There really isn't. If Trump decides to push matters, the Supreme Court is likely to strike it down as its covered only by the paper thin justification of trans people costing too much money (which the statistics don't agree with at all).

God, what a mess. More and more evidence mounts each day that presidents need political education and experience to perform their job well, or if nothing else, implement policies effectively.

So it's emperor Pencepatine's doing? Should have known.

Mattis reaction to what Trump did adds doubt that he actually did get input from generals and other military officials. Since Trump went over Mattis head here.

While I'm pretty protective of vulnerable LGBT people, especially trans people, I don't feel like dealing with this shit right now. Knowing the current White House Occupant, this is some cynical, poorly thought-out ploy to either create a media distraction or to secure funding for his border wall. I don't think even he knows if he really plans to follow through. So I'm going to ignore it unless it starts getting serious.

Also because I'm not in the mood I'm not going to be commenting on anything involved with this. Working myself into a rage and yelling into an echo chamber helps no one, anyway.

I have a feeling this is just a distraction from something more important.

There's a bill in the house involving military and border funding being negotiated, but the defense spending hawks in the Repub party have delayed it because they want to know what the military is spending on transgender conversions (which really ought to be zero, but a lot of military expenditures really ought to be zero, so...). Not too hard to connect the dots from there; Trump sees this as "transgender soldiers are blocking funding for THE WALL, so I must hurt them!"

Do the letters 'D' 'A' 'D' and 'T' ring any bells, Wiggy...?!

Every time I hear Pence mentioned I'm reminded of the old saying "The definition of a conservative is someone who fears someone, somewhere is happy".

Insult to Rocks

I know at least two congressmen in support of this. Steve King and Louie Ghomert, the idiots who think the Ottomans were defeated in Vienna because trans people weren't soldiers, except for a (fictional) period of time when the Ottomans used eunuchs in the Janissaries, then stopped because eunuchs lacked the testosterone to fight, or some other bullshit.
Ugh. And people ask me why I study military history.

Token Atheist

My trans son ran off an intruder at 3 a.m. with a WWI trench knife while I slept, and didn't even bother to wake me. He's tough and brave as hell. Any combat brigade would be lucky to have him. I personally want to see he and Trump go toe-to-toe over this policy, preferably with knives.

Demon Duck of Doom

I'm starting to think that the LGBTQ community needs to fucking force the rest of the world to accept their rights, by whatever means necessary.

I have to wonder what he is distracting us from. Though to quote Daily Show he is protecting transgender individuals with the wars he is trying to start. But seriously it worries me not just this discrimination but what is he trying to hide with this political maneuver?

Seems the joint chiefs are in disagreement with the spray tanned idiot. Last I heard, they're refusing to do anything based on his proclamation until there's a proper plan in place. And with the asshole in chief, that means never. He doesn't plan, he demands, then whines when it doesn't happen.

This is just smoke blowing. It will pass, but not before the goal of pandering is complete. The angry cheeto's base, what's left of it, will think they won something, and thus will continue their ill-advised support.

7/28/2017 7:17:22 AM

This is going to be awhile. Some are abroad and the military can't exactly pull them out.

Pence "and his staff have been working quietly to get Congress to roll back the Defense Department’s year-old policy

So quietly that those Generals that were supposedly consulted only learned about the announcement at the same time all of us did.
