Quote# 131604

How many times do lesbians have to tell you that butch and femme are lesbian-specific words? They hold very specific significance in relation to how we view and present our womanhood as women not interested in men.

There are other words bi/pan people can use (tomcat?), so please respect that butch and femme are for lesbians. Go out there and claim your own identities (or coin some if you want!!!) just please let lesbians keep our terminology to ourselves.

So I guess she's not a TERF? Must be a young dumb lesbian, because pansexuals don't care what's between your legs, and if you're masculine or feminine, they just want you and them to have a good time.

Have you copyrighted your words? I didn't think so. Stop being so damn precious; it's unbecoming.

How about bear and effeminate? They're pretty gay-specific words. Should no-one but gay men use those, then?

You can't own words; language is a living entity.

Couldn't #mypost be used by every single person writing something on the web? An utterly useless hashtag, I'd say.

And what do you want to bet that if bi/pan people did coin their "own identities," she'd be the first to attack them as not real/invalid compared to her "own?"

If you can make yourself heard over the engine of that Abbot Self-propelled Gun, knock yourself out.

If the above LGBT rights group will allow you to be so precious, that is.

I suspect this might be a better fit on SSTDT.

"butch and femme are lesbian-specific words?"

Words can be patented?

The Angry Dybbuk

Why is she crouching on this issue? I seriously would like to know why she's concerned about words evolving. That happens to subcultural content when it goes more mainstream. The fact others are using what was once lesbian "slang" (for lack of a better term), and UNironically when referring to themselves, is arguably a sign of progress.

Knew this was Tumblr almost from the start. Where else will you find people staking claim to words the GP uses and angrily yelling "MINE! You can't have them!"?

Butch has been used to refer to men too, lady. Hell, it's a name (Go watch Pulp Fiction sometime). And femme is so general as to be virtually useless. Why the need to mark words as someone's territory?

Doubting Thomas

I think it's really stupid that in our society there are words that are only OK for certain groups to use. If it's offensive for one person to use, it should be offensive for anyone to use it, if it's not offensive if another person uses it, it shouldn't be offensive for anyone to use it.

You don't own words that predate your movement's existence.

Your buzz words are fabulous, darling!
