[Why would the sun orbit the Earth when the sun's gravity is so much stronger?]
The amount or strength of the "gravity" of the sun is assumed and guessed at and is not known. IF it had huge “gravity” and we had a stationary Earth locked into place it would still go around the Earth because the Earth would not give in to the sun but in fact the sun would hold its orbit because of it.

Attention, Fundies. Get over it. The Earth is NOT the center of the universe. We live on an insignificant little planet in a solar system around one star on the outer fringes of the Milky Way Galaxy. Our sun is one star out of 200 billion in this galaxy. There are over 200 billion galaxies. Grow up, accept it, and admit that your fucking Book of Fables, i.e. the Bible, is wrong.

Ummm... no. It is known. We can measure how much space is curved by the sun, and, therefore, know the gravity.
There are other methods, as well, but this one alone invalidates your claim. While we're on the subject, though, do you also claim that we don't know how far away the sun is? That claim is no dumber than the one you already made.

Yes, I suppose that's true. Now, I'm not sure how you would "lock" the Earth in place, particularly without the tidal forces involved ripping it to shreds, but let's ignore that for a moment.
Let's see... the sun masses 1.9891×10^30 kg, and the mean distance to the earth is 149.6×10^6 km. The sun "orbits the Earth" once per year, giving it a period of approximately 3.1536x10^7 seconds...
2*pi*149.6e9 m = 9.4e11 m
9.4e11/3.15e7 = 29,806 m/s
29806^2/149e9 = .006
F=ma, so
F= .006*1.9891×10^30
F= 1.19346e28 N
So the Earth (massing 5.9742×10^24 kg) should be experiencing 1.19e28 N of force... or nearly 2000 m/s^2 of acceleration.
So, why exactly aren't we being crushed against an invisible vise with 200 times the force of gravity (at the surface of the Earth)?
Wolf O'Donnell -- Please don't blame this idiot on the U.S. education system. The system has it's problems, but nobody could educate a mind like his.
You can lead a dolt to knowledge, but you can't make him think.
Originally, yes, the sun's mass was deduced from planetary orbits and is therefore based on an assumed heliocentric system.
But since then, everything else has confirmed the original guess. Things that don't otherwise make sense.

Incorrect. G*m1*m2/d^2, bitch. (Though the post he is responding to is also incorrect: the Earth and sun exert equal force on each other; the sun's mass is so much greater that it is not accelerated as much as a result.)

If my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle. What's your point?
oh shit.... oh shit.... oh shit.....
Look imbecile. They exert exactly the same amount of force on each other, it's just that the Earth happens to be 300,000 times lighter got it you fuckwit?
If you're having trouble with this concept, we suggest you hop in a skating rink, grab an elephant (which is only 50 times heavier than you) by it's tail which can represent the force vector and see who swings who round. (And who gets pissed off and stomps who's head into a pancake)
To quote Douglas Adams: Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small unregarded yellow sun. Orbiting this at a distance of roughly ninety-two million miles is an utterly insignificant little blue green planet whose ape-descended life forms are so amazingly primitive that they still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea.
A fair description of what the earth is, certainly not the "Holy Center of the Universe, Birthplace of Jesus Christ"
MK, when you're right, you're right. Between the antiscientific ravings of Carico, dad, and childol (and, I think, one other featured poster this month), those of JohnR7 hardly even stand out anymore.
And if that's not enough to make one weep for the state of the public's general science knowledge in this country, I don't know what is.

Wow, that No Child Left Behind thing was a big FAIL wasn't it?
Edit: @ Anonymous/David D.G.: don't forget afdave. :)
"So, is childol the product of a US science education? If so, I can't for the life of me understand how you Americans have so many leads in the field of science..."
Well, first we weed out the real morons.. like the fellow being quoted here. Then we have the brightest folks from all over the world come and help us out. Think of American won Nobel prizes as World won nobel prizes. I'm proud that Americans are part of it, but grateful to scientists the world over who are also part of it.
Science is at its best as an international force. International projects like the LHC our are best way forward in discovering the secrets of the universe.
Meanwhile childol can be left to examine the lint that was created as a result of the gravitational pull of his belly button.
Confused?
