Quote# 140433

[Why do you like the USSR?]

They threw off the shackles of brutal feudalist oppression and life expectancy skyrocketed, infant mortality plummeted, industrialization and socialization caused their economy to grow at historically unprecedented levels, they produced tanks that defeated the Third Reich at a rate that astounded Hitler (we know this because the only recording we have of Hitler outside of public speeches was surreptitiously recorded in a meeting wherein he expressed this astonishment to his aides), they had the first satellite in space, the first telemetry to and from space, the first animal in space, the first man in space, the first woman in space, the first human to complete an orbit of the Earth, and the first space station.

I could go on. The USSR was really cool.

You're very young, right? And you're Russian. I envision you telling me this in Steve Martin's voice, as a "wild and crazy guy".

Philbert McAdamia

None quite so "cool" as Siberia. Plenty of work there, too, if you can dig it.

Insult to Rocks

life expectancy skyrocketed

Unless you got on the State's bad side, of course.

This is a "true...but" sort of situation.

The USSR had a lot of promise and it did achieve some great stuff. It also had a lot of bad turns, especially after Stalin went nuts and there was no way to extricate him from the top political echelon.

Neither the positives nor negatives should be overlooked.

The got new brutal oppression instead, and life-expectancy probably leveled out.

To astound one of the most evil dictators the world has yet seen, is not necessarily a merit.

The USSR was also really hard and oppressive, which is one of the reasons why it doesn't exist now.

Doubting Thomas

life expectancy skyrocketed

Unless you were one who got caught up in the purges.

industrialization and socialization caused their economy to grow at historically unprecedented levels

I'm sure they all enjoyed standing in line for four hours just to buy a pair of shoes.

The USSR was not even defended by its leaders. They did let the whole thing collapse, even though they were the main ones enjoying it. Think about it. Communism fell effortlessly everywhere(bar Romania).

Mikhail Gorbachev.

Enjoy your paradox, OP.
