China claims Muslim detention camps are education centres

Chinese officials have pushed back against growing criticism of the detention of Muslim minorities in internment camps, claiming authorities are merely providing professional training and education.

Beijing is facing allegations of mass incarceration and repression of Uighurs, Kazakhs and other ethnic minorities in Xinjiang in China’s north-west. An estimated 1.1 million people have been placed in internment camps, including re-education camps where, according to former detainees and other witnesses, inmates are subjected to intense political indoctrination and abuse.

“It is not mistreatment,” Li Xiaojun, the director for publicity at the Bureau of Human Rights Affairs of the State Council Information Office, told reporters on Thursday, according to Reuters. “What China is doing is to establish professional training centres – educational centres.”

Li added: “If you do not say it’s the best way, maybe it’s the necessary way to deal with Islamic or religious extremism, because the west has failed in doing so. Look at Belgium, look at Paris, look at some other European countries. You have failed.”

That's a lie, Xiaojun.

Can't they provide the professional training and education in ordinary public schools?

If it's NOT mistreatment, why doesn't Li spend a month or so in one of the "education centers", incognito, and then tell the world how pleasant they are?

Paris is not an European country...

Wait, they're handling religious brainwashing by interning people and subjecting them to "professional training", "education"?

Look at Belgium you say? Okay, fine, a Belgian here giving his own two cents. While I admit that our country currently has a huge refugee crisis, and the fact that it's handled rather poorly causes increased xenophobia and violence from all sides, nobody, and I do mean nobody (not even our far-right afaik) is suggesting we do something like build detention camps and "education centers". Because not only are those things a blatant violation of human rights, but everybody knows it's only going to escalate the problem.

Yes, it can certainly be handled a lot better by our government, I admit. But we are making progress. There are plenty of people that do manage to successfully integrate without the need of "education camps". And I do believe (or hope) our government is getting a wake-up call that they should be handling this with more competence and take it more seriously. Besides, fight religious brainwashing with more brainwashing? Yeah, I can totally see that going well...

I have a very hard time believing they are education centers. Brainwashing maybe but I suspect torture.

Trading one type of religious indoctrination for another is not an improvement, and NOT a defensible reason for concentration camps (like there ever could be a defensible reason).

Good Gravy! Evil Pooh-Bear is getting into persecuting Muslims, now. I wasn't aware Islamophobia was a thing in China.

There's been attacks in villages not far from my home. There's been attacks in places I know. There's been attakcs next to where my parents were. It's still better than the situation in Xinkiang. Far better. We shall deal with the few thousands of people actively supporting the bloodthirsty bastards, not the million of honest hardworking people whose only crime is to thare a similar ethnic identity.

China's never going to get past that tendency to oppress their own citizens for wrongthink then point at people they're oppressing for wrongthink and try to tell us "this? it's not happening, what made you think it's happening", are they?
