One of my high school classmates got involved in a satanic cult years and years ago. She even taught Sunday School in a church as a way to recruit teens into the cult.
It's very real. After reading her yet unpublished book, it was hard to sleep at night for a while. It is all around us all the time, but most of us don't really notice.
A friend's buddy used to be in a cult. He told my friend that he used to be able to see an aura around people and could pick out Christians on the street just by the aura. He said that Christians don't have any idea how much of God's power they hold.

I can see aura's to. All it takes is placing a colored screen behind you, place you at about 50 meters distance on a foggy day and I'll see the color of your aura lingering around you. This works! It really does. It even proofs the evil of science, as soon as I use a pair of binoculars the aura dissapears back into the colored screen.
Greg: That depends on how much they agree with the person making the decision. A lot of similarities makes it a branch of the religion. A lot of similarities but one difference which is "evil" makes it a cult.

A strong, heavily controlling charismatic leader
Guy with a funny hat?
A requirement to cut off "outsider" family and friends
A requirement to change one's name
Ok, no on these two.
A requirement to serve the group at all times without question
The bible is the one and only truth! Do XYZ in name of the lord! Even if it's not in the bible! Don'l learn to read for yourself!
Dire punishment for attempting to leave the group
All sinners burn in hell! If you're not a believer you're a sinner!

Seriously, I've never heard a convincing definition for cult that makes it different from a religion for anything but an arbitrary reason.

Sorry Splunge, but Satanic cults were out by the mid 90's. It seems that too many people began wondering why there was never any evidence to support the outrageous claims of all the "ex-cultists." If you want your fiction to be circulated in the Christ fan-fic circles, you'll have to chose a more up-to-date source of ultimate evil. Maybe you could change it so your friend became an Obama supporter.

I would say a good horror story will do that to you, but I highly doubt this horror story was any good.
