[On Hitler]It's not that he was a great leader, it's that people in despair will follow almost anything and anyone if they think it will get them out of it.

On the surface of it, without context, this is a perfectly sound statement concerning Hitler and the status of Germany -- not \"fundie\" at all.

The Nazi Party was just a fringe group until social conditions made people desperate enough to believe that something truly radical was needed to save them -- and the Nazis offered radicalism in a flavor that pandered to their national egos, so that was the kind of radicalism Germany chose to follow. America's own McCarthyistic phase was similar in attitude, albeit on a much smaller scale.

That much is true (although he did have a gift for speeches). Does that excuse Hitler or anyone else for what happened in the Reich?

Wow - is that why Dubbya is hell bent on creating a reign of despair through massive unemployment, spiralling foreign debt, a climate of terror, and undermining the fabric of society through division.

He's pretty much right, but the irony is laughable.
