[On Robin Williams character saying "who is evolved" in the film Night at the Museum]

Now I am not one to go on rants on things that may seem unimportant, but this really grinds my gears.

Here we have the new trend of the secular world. By working in words like 'evolution' to movie scripts wer are creating a false view of the world that is being force-fed to kids everywhere.

I think there should be a petition to take the lines "who is evolved?" out of the movie. It is not surprising that such a line was spoken by someone as liberal as Robin Williams, but still should not be said. If the views of creationism are being repressed and views of evolution are upheld- then can it really be called "freedom of speech"?

Anyhoo, that is my rant- please let me know your thoughts. I think if we band together and express our views we can make a difference.

Hey sagentx2005: Are you trying to be funny, or did two of your personalities write this?

You call for censorship, otherwise it's not 'Freedom Of Speech'? How dare you even use that phrase when you are clueless as to what it means?

Does anybody besides Peter Griffin of Family Guy actually say \"grinds my gears\" aloud?

Go ahead. You could even make a WHOLE movie on creationism. No one's going to even try to censor you like you're trying to do.

Nobody is stopping you from writing a fundie movie script and directing it. So stuff a sock in it!

I love sag's 'reasoning' - it's only free speech if it agrees with sag's beliefs and anything else should be censored.

Non-Contradiction award?, if you take away William´s opinion, you take it all. Clear and simple. You have right to advocate creationism, and he has his right,as an individual, and so does the script writer(because it´s FICTION)to say what they want.

Unless someone's pointing a gun to kids' heads and marching them into the theater, I fail to see how they are being 'force-fed' anything.

Including the word \"evolution\" in a film is not a violation of your freedom of speech. Having it banned due to a popular vote, however, would be.

\"It is not surprising that such a line was spoken by someone as liberal as Robin Williams...\"

sagentx I hate to break it to you but conservatives accept evolution based on the evidence as well. Next time you're in a room full of Republicans remember, nearly half of them thing creationism is a fairy tale too.

This is called Freedm of Speech. You have it, I have it, and so do the film makers. No one will remove the line because you don't like it. You and your crazy fundie friends should just avoid the damn movie.

what is not freedom of speech:
The right to say ANYTHING with the slightest critic. Other people who critisise you HAVE TOO the right of freedom of speech.
The banning of everything you think that is offensive to your beliefs.

If the views of flat earthism are repressed and views of round earthism are expressed, can it really be called freedom of speech?

1/15/2007 2:28:01 PM

Sandman

Well, your sentiments are all well and good....except for the fact that the views of creationism are not in any way being \"repressed.\" If creationists want creationism to be given the same scientific consideration and respect that evolution has, all they have to do is provide one, singele, solitary speck of verifiable evidence to support creationism. But they don't do this; instead they simple yell as loudly as they can that evolution is evil and must be repressed!

You can not use personal standards of axiomatic faith to establish scientific fact. If such were the case, the world would still be \"flat.\"

Yeah, that's just awful. It's not as though they mentioned God, Jesus, Satan, Christianity, ID or creationism. No, these lefty movie writers used the \"e\" word.

Damn, he's trolling. I was totally gonna go off on him. Never mind.

My thoughts...

A) The movie takes place in a natural history museum, not a church. So it's inevitably going to have some science content, even if it's just superficial.

B) Fundies are always complaining that the TOE teaches bad behavior (which it doesn't), but in this context, it's actually being used to promote good behavior.

C) I have a slight problem with that line too, because technically, humans and (modern) monkeys are evolved the same amount, just in different directions.

Yes... freedom of speech means only fundies get to say what they want, and nobody else does.
