Ultra-Orthodox rabbis decided to institutionalize their struggle, holding an emergency conference on the subject six weeks ago.
The event took place in the presence of the Lithuainia haredi public’s leading rabbis, including Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv and Rabbi Aharon Liv Steinman. The conference was intended for yeshiva students only, meaning married men, most of whom are fathers of young daughters.

I know there are lots of good men, but it seems to me it's almost always men involved in these insane religious persecutions, and women who are the victims of their insanity. What is wrong with them? Do they hate their own mothers, sisters, wives and daughters so much?
And there you basically have everything that's wrong with fundamentalism tied up in a neat little package with a bow on top: the conviction that they are so absolutely correct and so completely sure of "God's" will that they have the right, no, the obligation , to force their beliefs on everyone around them by any means necessary.

Its sick. But I gotta agree with Chan. No matter what they may claim/think, theres no way one can commit such acts against those they love.
As an Orthodox Jew, allow me to state that Orthodox Jews are not a monolithic entity. There are plenty of Orthodox Jews (including myself) who have spoken up against people who do idiotic things like spraying bleach and the like.
Dont worry. we work on a person by person basis. If you dont think like those monsters, then youre not one of them. Its important for moderates and non-fundies to speak out against their very loud-mouthed extremist factions. Otherwise, thats how they get power and recruit/raise even more of themselves.

Incidentally, your comment reminds me of a newswire photo I saw while working at a newspaper back in the mid-1980s: an attractive, dark-haired woman in a black bikini, walking on a public beach and toting a BIG military weapon of some sort! She was an active soldier in the Israeli military, who (according to the cutline for the photo) had to keep their weapons with them at all times, even on holiday (though it's possible that was only a temporary measure being used at the time). It made for a pretty hilarious image and doubtless drew double-takes from a lot of folks on the beach, as I'm sure she was well aware -- hence the big grin on her face in the photo!
