Quote# 25904

A lawsuit filed Wednesday in Midland federal court calls for the Ector County Independent School District to do away with the Bible curriculum implemented in August on the grounds that it violates individual religious liberties.

The American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU of Texas, People For the American Way Foundation and national law firm Jenner & Block LLP filed the lawsuit on behalf of eight ECISD parents who say they don’t agree with how the Bible class is taught.

In a news conference Wednesday, Lisa Graybill, legal director for the ACLU of Texas, said for students to learn a “literal truth” about the sacred text without acknowledging other religions surrounding it presents a problem constitutionally.

“It’s not that the Bible can’t be taught in schools,” she said. “It has to be done constitutionally.”

She added many parents have attempted to sit in on the class and haven’t been allowed the opportunity.

ECISD trustee L.V. “Butch” Foreman III said he didn’t understand how the parents could have an argument in the case if none had children taking the classes.

“If they don’t have children in the class, they can kiss my butt,” Foreman said. “They’re just looking to impose their beliefs and their views on everybody, and we don’t put up with that crap out here.”

There are some cases where I believe that if you're not part of class X, you shouldn't complain on their behalf.

This isn't one of them.

Why are the school districts even trying to do this? They all know that it is just a mater of time before someone finds out and sues them so it is pointless.

I sure am glad Ector County School District found such an eloquent, erudite gentleman to be their spokesperson.

Mr. Foreman, let me cordially extend an invitation to kiss MY butt as well.

Violations of constitutional law should be the concern of every responsible citizen. Further, I thought status as a citizen/taxpayer automatically gave one standing in an Establishment Clause case.

The whole point of removing a religious program from a public school is about NOT imposing beliefs.

What's sad is most Christians don't know things like who gave the sermon on the mount. We almost need Bible classes so that Christian know what their religion is based on, and so that people of other relgions can understand it. If they'd teach it like a piece of literature, no one would have a problem.

I would personally have no problem with the Bible being taught in schools, as a work of literature. Whether you love it or loathe it, I think most people would acknowledge the Bible has been a very influential book on human history. And point out both the good things and the bad things its inspired, from Martin Luther King to the Salem Witch Trials.

“They’re just looking to impose their beliefs and their views on everybody, and we don’t put up with that crap out here.”

Ironic, then, that what you want to do is impose your beliefs on everybody.
You won't even let the parents sit in on the class, to see if it's a neutral literary study or religious indoctrination. That's a bit suspicious, if you ask me.
Furthermore, how is an attempt to uphold the law \"[imposing] their beliefs\"?

Something tells me this guy is going to end up removed from his position for this crap. (At least, I hope so.)

<< I sure am glad Ector County School District found such an eloquent, erudite gentleman to be their spokesperson. >>

The Watcher: Sadly, in some parts of Texas, that really IS the pinnacle of eloquence and erudition among the local populace -- which, along with typical Bible-belt religious arrogance, explains how this class got set up in the first place.

Gads, I hate this place sometimes.
