Quote# 36153

All public schools should close and there should only be private schools because public schools do not teach morality but instead teach amorality. Also public schools teach the religion of Secular Humanism.

If it's secular how is it a religion?

3/12/2008 9:32:18 AM

It seems the more religious a person is, the more clueless they are about what a religion actually is. Well, clueless or in denial, anyway.

3/12/2008 9:37:32 AM

Does George Yurich realise that public schooling is the only form of education that is affordable to some people?

3/12/2008 10:15:19 AM

Fundie brainstorming session: We're losing, let's start calling secular humanism a religion!

Schools teach morality?

So parents can completely abrogate all responsibility for their offspring and the society in which they live?

3/12/2008 10:33:10 AM

Wait, actually, that never happened.

I did gain an actual understanding of science and developed a firm grasp on reality. Is that what you're afraid of?

You know, it's funny. I went to a private anglican highschool, and it turned me into an atheist. Amazing how things work out really.

3/12/2008 10:47:25 AM

Oh, great, then we could go back to the days when only the wealthy could educate their children and there was a large, ignorant underclass.

Wait a minute - fundies would probably love that. Uneducated people are easier to manipulate.

3/12/2008 10:47:47 AM

Schools were never supposed to teach morality. That was ALWAYS the prerrogative of parents. Secular humanism is not a religion. Another stupid strawman?

3/12/2008 10:56:03 AM

George, as a parent it's YOUR responsibility to teach morals. Do you really want someone else to frame your children's outlook on life, whether employed by the state or by a private company?

Besides, do you want to give up your comforts just your kids can read?

I think I barely scratched by in my amorality class.

Schools teach reading, writing and arithmetic.
You failed, didn't you?

I'll admit it, my philosophy profesor was batshit insane and used to scream "SEX!" to get our attention, but I don't think he was hired because of that.

3/12/2008 12:04:55 PM

Those sensible atheists and humanists would start private schools too, and you fundies would only sink deeper into ingnorance.

Personally, I don't care much for the illiteracy ratings in the States, but you might.

3/12/2008 12:05:03 PM

Hmm, I went to public school, and I don't rob banks, drink to get wasted don't do drugs, don't have a police record etc etc. Neither do my kids, or hubby, and we all went to public school. Sounds pretty moral to me!

From what I have seen it's those private religious schools that not only teach amorality, but practice it. All those priests/preachers molesting kids.

How can secularism be a religion?

3/12/2008 1:06:18 PM

And every member of this country can afford to send their child to private school or stay home from work and homeschool. Not to mention even being capable of it. Who will pay for foster children and orphans? Who will pay for the child of the crack addicted mother and prison residing father?

Public schools exist so that every child can be educated, without anyone's religion fogging up the view.

Besides, it is not up to the teachers and administrators to teach your children, or anyone else's children, morality. That is your job.

I attended public school for 13 years and while it definitely lacked in some areas, it was the best place in the world in others. I grew up with hundreds of different view points, different religions and those who practiced or believed in no religion. I grew up with Black kids, White kids, Asian kids, Hispanic kids and everything in between. I had friends whose families exposed me to traditions and cultures I never would have known about had I been hidden in my parents house with no access to anyone else or their thoughts or their lives.

Oh, that's your goal, isn't it? You want to make sure kids are NOT exposed to so many differences. I forgot about that for a second.

Now that I remember where you're coming from, move ahead; do not pass go, do not collect $200.

Do your job and teach your kids morality. That is not the responsibility of anyone else, nor of any school.

3/12/2008 1:13:46 PM

That's your job to teach 'em that.

3/12/2008 1:34:27 PM

I went to a Catholic school and got a great education in everything except religion.

So this could work.

3/12/2008 1:38:02 PM

And that way we can keep the poor people in their place!

Wait, maybe I'm thinking of medieval Europe?

3/12/2008 2:04:41 PM

Yes, because that worked so well during the Dark Ages.

David D.G.

These yahoos think that EVERYTHING is a religion, so if you're not explicitly teaching their religion, you must be teaching some other one -- hence the claim that "schools teach the religion of secular humanism."

The reasoning would be sound, if it weren't for the fact that the premises are completely insane.

Fundies do not need a formal education, George. I thought this had already been established. Whatever you have to say about public schools is really superfluous, as you clearly have never benefited from the experience.

Keep your fundie brats at home. Shove the bible into their heads. Make them useless godslaves like yourself and segregate them forever from normal society. But don't drag the rest of the country down to your bathetic level of stupidity.

Has there been a single successful fundie parochial school? "Jesus Camp" doesn't count.
