Ah yes, the unwed Swede bullshit. It seems that Sweden has done away with marriage and only does civil unions. Marriages have been left to the churches. So if you get married outside of a church it is classified as a civil union and not a marriage. The fundies are jumping all over these 'unmarried' people.

Well, more or less. I am pretty certain that a marriage outside of church still counts as a marriage to the law. But our civil unions (available for same-sex couples) have pretty much exactly the same legal implications as marriage.
But, the important thing that makes people marry less here is the "sambo"-laws. A sambo (lit. togetherlive, or something. No relation to the martial art with the same name, unless it's a particularly fiery relationship...), is a live-in girlfriend or boyfriend. If you are a couple living together you are regarded as sambos, and that ALSO gives you pretty much the same legal mumbo jumbo with respects to inheritence, taxes and whatever, as marriage. So many don't see any need for an expensive ceremony or anything.
Both my brother and my sister have children, have been living together with their partners for 10 years or so, and have very happy, good lives. No marriage necessary.
