Quote# 43994

In an era when birth control and abortion make childbearing completely optional, the number of out-of-wedlock births shows the contempt that many women have for marriage.

Yet most of these single mothers still demand that the man they chose not to marry before having sex with him provide financial support for them and their children -- while denying the man any of the rights and protections of marriage.

Men routinely discard wives and children to follow the nearly universal male biological desire for diversity in mating. Adultery is now openly expected of men, even if faithful wives deplore it.

With "gay marriage," the last shreds of meaning will be stripped away from marriage, with homosexuals finishing what faithless, selfish heterosexuals have begun.

(the whole article is like this, this is just a sample)

Look, you're a great sci-fi writer, but that doesn't make you qualified to write serious social commentary.

childbearing completely optional... out of wedlock births... contempt for marriage.

It does not follow.

We are pro-marriage. And by that we mean pro-marriages that only fit our narrow definition that we invented once our stance on bi-racial marriages failed.

If it's written by a mormon it's not worth reading.

Orson Card? The guy who wrote Ender's Game?

I thought you were smarter/cooler than this!

anonymous_troy, yes, THAT Orson Scott Card. He has been known for his fundie views for quite some time.

...THE Orson Scott Card? D: I'm sad now.

Also, on what planet is "adultery openly expected" of anybody? On MY planet, adultery is still looked-down upon.

Hey Orson, what about those MEN who choose not to marry the women they have sex with, hm? Your rant is a bit slanted and sexist.

The biggest problem YOU are having is that men, due to the advent of DNA testing, can't just up and abandon those children after they get the women pregnant. No more of this "It's not mine!".

As for Gay marriage, no one is asking YOU to marry a guy, so STFU.

Jesus, first Niven and now this?

8/1/2008 7:31:12 AM

meh.

meh. In context of the entire article, it's much more about what the 'faithless selfish heterosexuals' have begun than what the homosexuals are going to finish.

"Seen in this context, we are fools if we think "gay marriage" is the first or even the worst threat to marriage."

also:
"It is such an obvious overreach by judges, far beyond any rational definition of their authority, that even those who support the outcome of the decisions should be horrified by the means."

I wonder how true that is. reminds me of the terry schiavo fiasco.

1. Maybe if we taught our children more about birth control there would be less abortions and less 'out-of-wedlock' births.

2. If they guy doesn't want to pay, then the guy shouldn't play. Isn't that the line you tell women?

3. Your a member of the FLDS church aren't you.

4. meh, at least he's not putting the whole destruction of the nuclear family on the gays.

Miss Blasphemy

"childbearing completely optional"

Look, I don't think abortion should be a common contraceptive, but if you want to force child bearing on everyone you possibly can, FOAD.

"Yet most of these single mothers still demand that the man they chose not to marry before having sex with him provide financial support for them and their children"

I guess you have a child out of wedlock and are bitter? LOL. Yeah, my mom was a single mom, and needed every shred of that child support check. My pops bounced and he paid his share for not pulling out or having my mom swallow. Not my fault. :D

"With "gay marriage," the last shreds of meaning will be stripped away from marriage, with homosexuals finishing what faithless, selfish heterosexuals have begun."

I am so glad you feel this way, because it shows how much emphasis you bigots put on a goddamned TITLE than the actual love between your mate and yourself. What two gay people in love do has no affect on you, yet you claim it strips away what marriage means. What does it mean? Women are house slaves and interracial couples are an abomination? Uh huh..

RE: everyone who's surprised this is Orson Scott Card.

Seriously? Yes it's him. Put down Ender's Game and pick up the Homecoming Saga. you will no longer be surprised with any fundyism this man says about the time you realize the entire series is MORMONS IN SPACE!!!

Seriously the book talks about "desert law" which is basically shooting any adulterer or homosexual (who doesn't marry and bare children...).

@ Green
What's that about Niven? I've heard nothing.

@ Orson Scott Card
I'm perfectly happy for you to reserve to yourself the religious and spiritual significance of marriage to yourself (In your opinion.) Likewise I don't mind if you deceive yourself into believing that the love of a homosexual couple for each other pales in value compared to that which you and your wife have for your partner.
But when you deny secular benefits to everyone not in your kind of relationship, then you are guilty of oppressing your homosexual neighbours.
It takes nothing from your marriage when others marry.

@John-in-Oz:

In March of 2008 at a DHS science and technology conference, Niven suggested that "a good way to help hospitals stem financial losses is to spread rumors in Spanish within the Latino community that emergency rooms are killing patients in order to harvest their organs for transplants....The problem [of hospitals going broke] is hugely exaggerated by illegal aliens who aren’t going to pay for anything anyway".

I wonder if this guy understands the meaning of "responsability". A child is A CHILD, whether is conceived in marriage or not. Those men conceived them voluntarily and they have to asume the consequences. And he forgets that the vast majority of those MEN choose not to marry the women.

If you want another book of his (though why would you?) that is emblematic of his views, pick up Empire. I'm all big on politic-y books and I liked Ender's Game, but I only got about 50 pages into Empire before my head went kabloo-ey with the ridiculous biases

"The number of out-of-wedlock births shows the contempt that many women have for marriage."

A few lines later:

"Men routinely discard wives and children to follow the nearly universal male biological desire for diversity in mating."

In other words, ladies, men can continue doing as they please, you still have to suck it up and like it. Oh, and we'll call you whores for not getting married, and call you stupid if you do.

8/1/2008 12:42:41 PM

szena

So, according to you, no one likes marriage but your religion demands that it be forced on society for its own good.

You sure know how to suck the joy out of a relationship.
