How long before married people answer the dictators thus: Regardless of law, marriage has only one definition, and any government that attempts to change it is my mortal enemy. I will act to destroy that government and bring it down, so it can be replaced with a government that will respect and support marriage, and help me raise my children in a society where they will expect to marry in their turn.

Hey, Orson! Advocating the overthrow of the U.S. government is a Federal crime. Go right on ahead and do what you feel you have to do. I hope you enjoy living in the theocracy you so obviously want to establish here. The second I think this country might become a theocracy I will load up me and mine and head for Europe.
Never read his work.
No I won't.
Ender's Game and the sequel were pieces of shit. He basically parallel's Ender's life with Hitler's (there are a number of essays out there on the subject, some questioning if Card even wrote the books since he displays a lack of knowledge about his own writing) and basically 'forgives' Hitler for his genocide.
Lol, you can't even realize that your government's running you into the ground and threatening the world... Let alone insurrect...
Shush, monkey, and go back to your box.
Are you serious? Ender's Game was one of the most over-the-top homoerotic books I have ever read in my life. Holy shit, I BS you not, I sat here convinced OSC must be one of thost flamboyant, faaaabulous gay men from San Francisco until I read this.
And if it actually came to it... he'd probably think of better ways to spend his time and effort.
I love when people threaten that little things like this are seriously going to lead to some kind of civil war. Yeah, like Americans are going to go to that kind of effort.
Just FYI Card is a notorious homophobe, despite Ender's Game being about a bunch of little boys running around a locker room naked. Someone needs to tell people how anthropologists define marriage so they can annoy them for a while. It would do some good to see them use their arguments that fags destroy civilization when anthropologists know of cultures that have had gay marriages for centuries.
@Beeblebrox: Is it really a federal crime? It shouldn't be; after all, we got to where we are by overthrowing the previous government.
...lemme guess, its the Patriot Act.
Notice that the Mormon neglects to mention the "ONE man, ONE woman" part. He wants a society where his children "will expect to marry in their turn." Considering the events in the news of late, I find that statement particularly chilling.
".. any government that attempts to change [marriage] is my mortal enemy. I will act to destroy that government .."
We can't wait for you to either make an ass of yourself, or eat a hat.
But seriously, why are you defending an almighty.

Never stand between God and a bullet. Invariably the bullet is one God could take, and was only ever aimed at you.

OSC, you are a stupid, stupid person who doesn't understand why homosexuals get married. It's not so they can piss off people like you (although I think some might), it's to prove they love each other. (Intelligent) Governments (unlike the former one here in Aus) understand this and that is why they allow people with that preference to marry. So, saying that, get over yourself, you stupid little person.
Marriage has only one definition... whose, yours? Everyone has a different definition of what their marriage entails. People don't get married to piss other people off. (Well, nobody except the FLDS...) You can't fling the universe into orbit around you, Orson.
Anyone for an old-fashioned book-burning?
Seriously, though, I'd love to sic the FBI on this guy, but I don't think he's quite stepped far enough over into terroristic threats territory yet. Pity. He needs to get butt-raped in prison worse than anyone I've seen lately.
Actually no, theoretically the first amendment provides protection to those who endorse sedition. Sedition itself is punishable, but expressing and trying to persuade others is not. In practice, this has not always been absolute.

Because it can explain better than I.
#Edit: Also, OSC is a fucktard that needs to DIAF, he has proposed that homosexuals cannot be considered equal members of society, and that laws against it should be kept to punish those who flout society's (HIS society's) sexual restriction and thereby discourage others. Seriously, I still love the Ender Saga in spite of OSC, but damn if he isn't one of the world's biggest bigots.

Card is a good writer. My opinion on art v. author of said art closely echoes that of Oscar Wilde i.e. art should not be judged through the prism of its creator's personal life but on its own merit.
That being said. Card is not so much a bigot as he has one serious hang-up with the idea of family - to him, marriage and the children it inevitably produces - I say inevitably because in his opinion that is the point - is the pinnacle of and the reason for human existence.
This makes his worldview skewed in my opinion, but so long as I don't see him advocating violence (which he has quite a reasonable aversion to), I won't verbally abuse him, nor pan his books.
God damn it, Orson.
How long before Christians answer the dictators thus: Regardless of law, God has only one true word, and any government that attempts to allow others is my mortal enemy. I will act to destroy that government and bring it down, so it can be replaced with a government that will respect and support the one true God, and help me raise my children in a society where they will expect to worship Christ in their turn.
As much of an asshat as OSC has become, there's something bizarrely fascinating about his "the word 'marriage' refers to a single, eternal, and unchanging natural institution rather than a social practice" schtick -- it's like a fundie version of Platonic ideals (making it a double dose of bullshit), but at the same time claiming this absolute ideal is somehow "obvious".
Umm...what if your kids don't want to get married? Are you going to blame it on the homosexuals, too? And "dictators?" Yes, because giving people equal rights has always been a high priority among dictatorships. And they ARE trying to "respect and support marriage." It's just that they're supporting marriages OTHER than yours. For the umpteenth time, gay marriages have no bearing on your life whatsoever. If they do, it's your problem. Get a grip.
marriage has only one definition
Yes, it is a bond between two consinting adults who care about each other.
I will act to destroy that government and bring it down...
Jesus appreciates your anarchy(1 Corinthians 6:1).
so it can be replaced with a government that will respect and support marriage
You don't respect or support marriage. Just look at the hetrosexual divorce rate.
and help me raise my children in a society where they will expect to marry in their turn.
This isn't the 17th century. Your child has a right to marry whoever they wish, as long as they can both give consent. They also have the right to not marry if they choose.
1700's: Marriage is an arrangement made by parents for monetary or social gain.
1900's: Marriage is a consensual contract between a man and a women of the same race.
1960's: Marriage is between a man and a women.
2000's: Marriage is a consensual contract between two people.
I like where this is going!
2020: Marriage is a consensual contract between two or more entities of sufficient intelligence and awareness to express informed consent - including sexy androids / tentacled aliens / sentient planets.
Why, why, why, why, Card? Your books hold a special place on my shelves. Why must such brilliance come from such a idiot?
In answer to another quote by OSC not too long ago, I lamented that some of what little money I have would go to this asshole because I really wanted to finish the Ender saga when the last 2 books come out. Now, I have no intention of giving this motherfucker a damn thing except maybe a slap across the face if he does a book signing in my town.
I liked Ender's Game a lot. I really did.
Then I started reading the later books...and Mr. Card's fundie tendancies started to show through more and more through his Sockpuppet Carlotta.
This is just too disgusting for words, even when compared to systematically neutering my favourite character.
Sideshow Bob:
Indeed. I've been learning quite a lot about some science fiction authors lately. I never realized Pournelle and Niven were such misogynistic asstards.
Oh, well. If you must, that's why they have used bookstores...
I'm a married person, and I would say that marriage is often defined as "a legal contract between two consenting adults who intend to spend their lives together". Most governments who wanted to include polygamy, or arranged marriages, or rape-then-forced-marriage would probably be criticized, very heavily.
I would also support a government that will respect and support marriage and help people raise their children.

No government that I know of will REMOVE marriage between men and women. They will all still respect and support marriage between men and women. Some just want to EXPAND the definition, so more (already existing) relationships also can become marriages.
Have fun trying to destroy a government on your own. The majority of the population (at least in the West) are on the side of equality, of progress, of looking forward. The wrong side of history is going backwards, repressing and destroying people's lives.
Like you, animationmeister Don Bluth is an LDSer.
But unlike you, I still have full respect for him.
Can you figure out why , Orson...?!
And why - unlike the DVDs of his films - your books no longer grace my shelves?!
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
