If it's so harmless and pointless, then what's the fuss about getting rid of it?

What Mayhem said.
EDIT: How long do you think it would take them to notice if they just took it off without telling anyone. Just a short run, maybe a few thousand dollars worth or something. It would be an interesting experiment. If need-be, you could always just claim it was a printing error.

But it's not true. Why do we do have to shut up and not worry about something we don't believe in??

They've got a point.
Well, the fuss is pretty much because Newdow is a raging paranoid wierdo who percieves some christian conspiracy against atheism or...something. While there are plenty of atheist-bashing fundies posted here, it doesn't mean that there are constantly people out to get him.
From what I understand, his own daughter converted and he blames society for indoctrinating her or whatever, so he makes a huge row out of everything.

Also, I should add that while the country perhaps wasn't founded on Christianity, it was clearly founded on spiritual principles, otherwise "In God We Trust" wouldn't be on anything.

No, because it wasn't. Please know what you're talking about before you start talking.

Disagree with the first sentence, but he's right. Having 'God' on money doesn't violate the first amendment.
I also love the delicious irony of having 'God' on something which is supposed to be the root of all evil. >:)

Simon, In God We Trust was put on the money during the 50's when the Godless Commies were scaring us and we had to separate ourselves from them

You're right. It's no big deal. So what if the coins say "In Thor we trust", or "In Zeus we trust", or "In the goddess we trust", or "In Satan we trust"?
The mint could run several production runs of each coin. It would probably generate interest in coin collecting.
You don't have a problem with that, do you?

Not founded on Christianity.
In God We Trust does promote a religion.
You can choose to ignore the lack of the saying even more easily.
You make too much of a big deal about keeping something clearly unconstituitional and divisive.
And it does matter....just not enough for start a riot over it.

Well, if true, alrighty then. That guy still needs to stop being such a whiner if he wants to actually make a legitimate case.
We should put "in capitalism we trust" to seperate ourselves from the commies who are about to actually overtake us XD

"Disagree with the first sentence, but he's right. Having 'God' on money doesn't violate the first amendment."
Unfortunately, it does...
Think about it, which religion uses "God" as the title/name of it's deity? I'm not talking about "god" which is just another word for Deity... I'm talking "God", the capitalised word that refers only to the Christian Deity.
As such, the motto, by using the capitalised word, is refering to the Christian Deity only, and is such violating the First Amendment. It is an official promotion of one specific religion, you see... and that's why it shouldn't have been put there in the first place.

@CT
Further, by it being there, capitalized or not, it promotes religion over atheism, and violates the first amendment anyway.

When they accidentally minted a bunch of dollar coins without the IGWT on the edge like they were supposed to, people threw a shit-fit pretty quickly.

People don't get that our country was founded on Christianity, do they? ... Why do they get SO easily offended by something totally harmless!
"In God We Trust" started being put on coins after the Civil War. It was put on paper money in the 1950's. It had nothing to do with the founding of our country. As many have pointed out, why get SO easily offended by something totally harmless as removing it?
