(CNN) -- Saudi Arabia's religious police detained two male novelists for questioning last week after they attempted to get the autograph of a female writer at a book fair in Riyadh, according to local media reports.
According to the Saudi daily newspaper Al-Watan, Abdu Khal and Abdullah Thabet approached female writer Halima Muzfar when they were stopped by police.
Both novelists, who were held for questioning but not charged with a crime, are demanding an apology from the conservative Muslim kingdom's Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice.
The commission, feared by many Saudis, is made up of several thousand religious policemen charged with, among other things, enforcement of dress codes, mandatory observance of prayer times and segregation of the sexes.
Saudi Arabia follows a strict interpretation of Islam called Wahhabism and punishes unrelated men and women who are caught mingling in public.

I'm just surprised they don't think forcing men to spend *only* time with other men is going to lead to homosexuality.

Yes, in the urban areas you have women who not only read and write, but are well educated and can (and do) work. In fact, like with Iran, woman from wealthy families are liable to be even more educated than men because education is considered a 'safe' profession for women to go into.

There are many stripes of fundie islam - just as there are with Christianity, some are more fucked up than the others. The Taliban I'd say is the worse, Wahhabism is a tiny tiny bit better.

Let's not forget people, like moderate Christians, there are many many moderate muslims and quite a few, relatively, moderate muslim states.

And yet look at Azerbaijan. Just as Shia Islam as Iran, but is the other extreme, in terms of socio-politics. Is very much a secular democracy, is pro-US (Al-Qaeda has no foothold there), and enjoys full diplomatic relations with Israel (because of their Jewish community protected by a religious edict in the 17th Century, Israel sent them aid, post-USSR collapse). Apart from the mosques (as well as other places of worship), you'd hardly tell it was a Muslim majority country. The women wear Western dress (certainly the young women; fancy hairstyles, crop-tops, miniskirts & heels!), and the men drink alcohol - they obey the Quran literally, re. not drinking the 'fruit of the vine'; their attitude?: 'We don't drink wine - so instead we drink Vodka!' (they do a very good plum brandy too).

Saudi Arabia (as well as Iran, Sudan etc), take note. Wahhabiism & the Mutawwa have no right to exist in our modern world.

So are they going to stone Halima for enticing these two young men? Obviously she's a whore who needs to die. What the hell is she doing reading and writing anyway?

Someone should explain to me some time how these people manage to meet and procreate. If you can't meet people outside of your family, how does it happen? (Barring incest, of course).

I'll be the last to defend the Saudi state, but some of these comments are so prejudiced their authours should be ashamed of themselves. Of course there are literate women in Saudi, as well as female authors and poets and artists and photographers and whatnot. Stay on topic please.

By the way, Azerbaijan is hardly a functioning democracy.
