Quote# 60374

If you are a parent who has read the Bible, and believes it to be the inerrant Word of God, then this book is for you. The Bible teaches us, in no uncertain terms, that we are to "Train our children up in the way they should go". Biblically, there is use of a "rod" or other implement that is used for spanking. This is NOT hitting or anything even close to it. It is carefully controlled, calm spanking that is issued on the bottom or upper thigh. The Bible promotes this. But, it does not just start or end in spanking. Spanking is a tool God has given us to help us direct our children, but it is not the ONLY tool. It is critical to spend time with your children, getting to know them, by having them close to you (tomato staking), and leading them in paths of righteousness. Love on your kids everyday, all day, by having them near to you. Don't send them off to their rooms, don't send them away to day care, don't send them off to school. Keep them with you and near you where you can see each attitude and problem as it comes up, and lovingly correct, whether through training a different attitude, sending to a corner, or spanking, or all of the above.

So. Are we proposing walling kids off from reality and then beating them when they chafe at the bit? Sounds like a recipe to raise a serial killer.

"don't send them off to school."

I would hardly consider that loving them.

What else would you expect from a book on child rearing called Raising Godly Tomatoes?
It does explain why fundies have ketchup for brains.

"This is NOT hitting or anything even close to it."
Of course not.
It's beating the holy fuck out of them.

"It is critical to spend time with your children, getting to know them, by having them close to you (tomato staking), and leading them in paths of righteousness. "

I agree that one should spend time with their kids, but they don't need to spend every waking moment with you.

"Don't send them off to their rooms, don't send them away to day care, don't send them off to school. "

Yes, because heaven forbid little Jimmy get's a life of his own!

"Keep them with you and near you..."

What about when you have to go to work?
Take the kid with you?

You might also want to try cutting off the boys' pee-pees with scissors. Only in extreme cases of wrong thought of course.
If only God had been as smart as you, and made sure his creatures had no free will at all. We'd have heaven on earth.

No,no,no,you have it all wrong. May I refer you to Deuteronomy 21:18-21? You must stone your disobedient children to death. This is really the only option.

Yes, Yes! This is true! Personally, I'm 43 years young by the grace of Jesus. My mother is right here beside me, helping to guide my hands as I type this message. One day, with her blessing, I'll be able to use those hands to stroke my di...ow, ow, ow!!!! Mother hit me! And that really hurt, Mother, and it's still hurting! Mother hit me!

Oy Vey!

"If you are a parent who has read the Bible, and believes it to be the inerrant Word of God, then this book is for you."

First mistake right there.

"The Bible teaches us, in no uncertain terms, that we are to "Train our children up in the way they should go". Biblically, there is use of a "rod" or other implement that is used for spanking. This is NOT hitting or anything even close to it."

How is this not hitting?

"Spanking is a tool God has given us to help us direct our children, but it is not the ONLY tool."

Prove God exists then we'll talk about the spanking issue.

"It is critical to spend time with your children, getting to know them"

Agree.

"by having them close to you (tomato staking),"

By taking them gardening with you?

"and leading them in paths of righteousness."

Just raise your kids to be decent and they should be fine. No religion needed for this.

"Love on your kids everyday, all day"

Again, agree.

"by having them near to you. Don't send them off to their rooms, don't send them away to day care, don't send them off to school. Keep them with you and near you where you can see each attitude and problem as it comes up, and lovingly correct, whether through training a different attitude, sending to a corner, or spanking, or all of the above.
"

Now this is getting creepy.

I'm not against spankings in principle but I've found that they do absolutely nothing to discipline my son. The one thing he hates more than poison is being bored; so taking a 5+ minute time-out is just the worst.

I also have the option of "creeping punishment". After I rule for a time-out, if he stands around giving me crap about it I tack on another five minutes for each infraction. Usually, when his "sentence" hits around 15-20 minutes, he gives up and goes to the time-out spot.

Don't send them off to their rooms, don't send them away to day care, don't send them off to school.

Not only will that cripple your kids socially, it's simply not realistic for the majority of families. As for sending them to their rooms, 90% of the time it's done to give the parent some slack.

I agree with you. Fundies don't let your kids loose on the world, they'll only be confused when faced with reality. Best keep them at home with mom and dad.

It can be awkward for normals when encountering fundie kids because the kids won't know how to act and think like typical humans. And it will be pointless trying to be reasonable with them because their minds have been destroyed.

So all in all, yes, fundies keep your kids away from normals.

Calm spanking my arse, (pun intended). The bible pretty clearly says that you should stone 'em with stones till they are dead. Goddamn milquetoast heretic.

Hitting and spanking are the same thing.

Also the 'rod' in the Bible we're not supposed to spare, was about steering the sheep, not hitting them. So the Bible is just saying to direct your children in the right ways. No problem there. But you guys think it means hitting with a rod. Argh.

Also, to all fellow-FSTDTers, as a secular home-schooler, I do have to correct the assumptions that home-schooling means lack of social experiences/social skills etc. Quite the contrary in fact - all the home-school kids I know have TERRIFIC social life and social skills.

The rod is a metaphor for setting clear boundries, not for beating the shit out of your kids when they do something you don't like. A shedherd uses a rod to block the way of his sheep and nudge them in the direction he wants them to go. But of course, I heard this from some godless hippy pagans so you know it's not really true. Or something.
