Take_me_away!: I have just gotten the official email that the flu shot will be mandated for ALL healthcare workers in NYS. Worse yet, we have now found that 3 out of the 4 major hospitals in my area are MANDATING the SWINE FLU shot as well (for all healthcare workers). My husband and I have come to a decision that I will not be getting the swine flu shot, and we are preparing for the worst, financially. I'm a nurse, so there are no jobs out there for me in the state that won't require me to get this shot. Prayers for all of us, folks. The persecution has begun

take_me_away!: I know.... I actually feel at peace about it. My husband and I have already had discussions about this over the past months, as we knew this was coming. We most likely will lose the house, as there is no way I can get a job that will make as much money. My son will have to be pulled from daycare if they require kids to get it - there's no way he's getting that vaccine, either. So...... I most probably will get a waitressing job - or two, that will get us some money.I KNOW that the Lord will provide.

1. Fuck you. No seriously. Do you know why healthcare workers have a giant list of compulsary vaccines in other countries? Ones with better healthcare systems? Because your in contact with huge numbers of sick people. Now you falling ill is not the problem. You being Typhoid mary is the problem. Honestly unleashing swine flu through a hospital is a fun way to rack up the casualty count since the majority of people in a hospital are immunologically compromised.

2. Its not unfair. Unfair is you not getting the shot and killing someone with swine flu because your a jackass.

I wonder if this has to do with the "vaccinations are partly made of aborted babies" idea that Brother Randy talked about when he frequently got mentioned here in the past.

And, may I ask, Caustic Gnostic, in what capacity do you work at a hospital and require a shot; are you for example a nurse, a receptionist or some other capacity, like working in the cafeteria? I only ask because once I can find a new job I'm planning on going back to school to become a medical assistant, and am wondering if it's standard procedure for all hospital employees, regardless of hospital staff level, to receive that kind of shot.

I'm assuming it is, but we all know what ASSuming means...

Unless, of course, you don't want to just casually mention it to millions of people on the the internet because of an annyoing person like me. Which I would completely understand.

RE: The safety of mass H1N1 vaccination.

The latest [i]Nature[/i] discusses this. It's worth reading.

Please note, no flu vaccine undergoes "long-term" testing, influenza strains are "seasonal" and the WHO only usually advises which strains are most likely to occur and hence should be the target of vaccine development less than 12 months ahead of time. E.g. the predictions for this year's seasonal flu jab came out in February, and development of the specific trivalent vaccine recommended starts only then.

In the end it's a balance of risks. Perhaps mandatory vaccinations should be a "pre-approved" option to be implemented when the situation more clearly warrants it? But would the increased threat of the disease to the population in the meantime, and the inevitable avoidable deaths that happen as a consequence, be justifiable in light of possible adverse reactions?

Priestling: "Hang on, Evo DOES have a valid point. This IS the first H1N1 vaccine ever to be given in mass quantities."

No it isn't. Several past seasonal flu jabs have included vaccination against an H1N1 type. It's the most common strain of flu found in humans.

1) As a health care "professional" you should already know and understand the importance of vaccines and their ability to curb pandemics in mass populations.

2) As a health care "professional" you should be willing to accept and comply with vaccination programs for the greater good of those patients you encounter on a daily basis.

3) How in wide world of sports did you ever become a nurse with so much fear and aprehension towards science and medical technologies?!

You are (presumably) in regular contact with infants, the elderly, the sick, the injured, people with serious medical conditions or people on immunosupressive medications*. Since those things could all put your patients at a higher risk of contracting/dying from H1N1, taking steps to avoid passing it on is the only moral and ethical thing to do. As a nurse, who supposedly has some idea of what diseases are and how they work, you should have had the common sense and decency to get yourself vaccinated on your own initiative.

*that assumption is based on the fact that you are a nurse. If you don't come into contact with any of those people, where the heck do you work?

Have you considered that maybe, just maybe, the Lord provided you with a vaccine that will allow you to continue to work at your job, remain healthy, and not jeopardize the health of others?

Reminds me of an old joke...

Healthcare workers work with people who are sick and thereby more susceptible to infection. They are weak and thereby at greater risk of dying.
Don't want to vaccinate; don't work in healthcare.

If you're a nurse, you ought to know from your education how useful vaccinations are.
It's no more persecution than demanding a driver's license before you're allowed to drive a car. It's for other people's safety, as well as yours.

You'll rather lose your house, than take a fairly safe shot that saves the lives of millions of children?

Restaurants might well require the shot too; customers have a thing against staff coughing and sneezing into their food...

(There were a sizeable number of teenagers getting narcolepsy after the swine-flu shot. The thing was, the risk of getting narcolepsy was in the swine-flu itself (if you had a genetic variation), not in the shot particularly. If the teenagers had gotten the flu instead, they could have gotten narcolepsy anyway.)

Most interesting how the same conspiracy theories were promoted again during the COVID-19 pandemic against SARS-CoV-2 immunization. Despite the fact that such old vaccination campaigns were highly successful. As usual Swede's comments are insightful. Guillain–Barré syndrome for instance is caused by a rare immune response to certain molecules. Although not exactly an allergy, it is a good analogy. If a vaccine triggers it, the person would have had the same reaction, and possibly an even greater one, to an actual infection. Another common claim is that natural immunization is best and that everyone should be infected.

The reason so much trouble is put into vaccine development and production is simply that they are much safer than the actual infection by live unattenuated virus. In the case of popular mRNA vaccines against SARS-CoV-2, only specific molecules were synthesized, they don't even contain the virus itself. Just so antibodies can be produced that bind to the surface of the virus, reducing its effectiveness (the virus otherwise binds to living cells and infects them, reproducing this way).

As for medical personel, it's a question of basic sanitation. Various COVID-19 denialists and anti-vaccine activists have lost their job because of the public health threat they pose (if they cannot be trusted to take the necessary basic steps to reduce transmission between patients and patient-personel, for instance). It then becomes a question of competence. It's not very different to road safety management, where drivers are expected to know and follow basic rules.
