You were born a Christian, not born gay. Religion is not a choice.
Or so the spokesman for House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) would have you believe. Questioned about why the House's top Republican opposes a hate crimes bill penalizing violence against gays, his spokesman said he "supports existing federal protections (based on race, religion, gender, etc) based on immutable characteristics," just not protections for things like being gay -- which conservatives occasionally claim is a choice.
"He does not support adding sexual orientation to the list of protected classes," Boehner spokesman Kevin Smith added. The statement was made in an email to CBS News.

How can anyone be born a Christian? Most babies have no concept of anything other than eating & sleeping.
And what about people born in the Middle East? Did they just happen to be born Muslim, or were they born Christian and just chose a false religion?
"You were born a Christian, not born gay..."
unless, you know, you were born to a family of a different religion. fucktard.
"You were born a Christian, not born gay. Religion is not a choice".
The above statement is totally delusional and the best reason why religion and government should not be allowed to mix. This guy forgets that a lot of RC priests are obviously homosexuals.
So much fail. Pisses me off that he will not get to read this but I want to say it.
1. You are born either A)Straight, B)Gay, C) Bi, or even D) Asexual.
2. That makes sexual orientation immutable. You are born without religion but as it is both the source and target of much discrimination it is protected under the law because of the founding Fathers' idea of freedom of religion.
"just not protections for things like being gay -- which conservatives occasionally claim is a choice"
Another couple of points:
1. Even if it was a choice that is no grounds for discrimination against an entire class of people. I mean you would be pissed if I wouldn't hire you because I don't like your religion. Not to mention it would be illegal for me to do so even though religion IS A CHOICE.
2. Unless you are Bi-sexual, being gay is not a choice. It is just how you are. Religion on the other hand is always a choice.
Sir, no one is born religious. At birth, no one has the cognitive function to even comprehend anything save for their own needs, and for some years after as well. Everyone is born an atheist by default. You can be born into a religious family and they can teach you to be religious, we've all seen that, unfortunately. No one has ever just "figured out" Christianity. You have to be taught it. And it oesn't even matter whether or not being gay is a choice or innate. It hurts no one, contrary to what you idiots think, therefore, it deserves to be legal and protected. It's people like this guy who deserve to be punched in the face, although I doubt it woul knock any sense into him. He doesn't know what it is.
"You were born a Christian"
As Richard Dawkins has pointed out, Religions are the only belief system allowed to count their children right down to the new-borns.
In more ways than one Christians could be called Born-yesterdayers
Born a Christian?, WTF?. Ok, ten seconds to explain me, then, what Baptism, proselytism, conversion and religion means.
Religion is not a choice? That sounds scary and, i'm sure, that in your twisted little mind it should be like that for all eternity. Only of course, if they are xians and do exactly what you and your babble says. Thank god, (anyone of them), that you can separate yourself from these crazy adult fairytale-clubs.
@Anonymous Tau
And while they're at it, they could just... well, simply stop labeling people for any reason.
Boehner certainly is not understanding sexual orientation, but I don't think that that he actually believes "you were born a christian" - that sentence makes a lot more sense if he accepts freedom of religion as an undeniable human right. So this is not as fundie as the first sentence might have you believe, but he also needs to phrase his sound bites better.

That is irrelevant to this discussion. If you refer to those implicated in pedophilia cases, Wikipedia informs that adult sexual orientation is unrelated to the sex of the victim, so your statement would be false. If you refer to the sexual orientations of other priests, then we would expect ~10% of them to be gay but since they aren't having sex it is not relevant.
Confused?
