And now science is doing exactly the same to religion - only gradually, and as & when gaps are filled. Which has certainly been accelerating from the Renaissance currently up to the repairing & restart of the LHC.
Like I say, Andy, from before said Renaissance when God was at the centre of human importance, since the likes of Da Vinci, Galilieo et al God has been pushed further and further away from that centre, and certainly from the early 1800s onwards, closer & closer to the edge of the platform. To where he is right now - hanging on by his last few fingernails. And he will finally fall into the Abyss of Human Irrelevance, to join all the other mythological deities of yore.
After all, why aren't you worshipping Ah Kinchil/Kinich Kakmo, and reading the Popol Vuh, Andy? If you can answer that question, then you'll understand this quote by Stephen F Roberts:
"I contend we are both atheists, I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours."
@Space Lizard
"Maybe I'm just in denial."
Maybe not, but mayhaps in the river in Paris. Whereupon you're spotted by a Gendarme crossing said river on a bridge. He hurriedly fumbles in his pockets for something, whilst muttering 'Ah hev waiteed twentee-faive yeers teu doo zis!'. He pulls out of a pocket a red clown's nose, puts it on, then shouts to you (in an outrageous accent): 'Yeu arh insane!'
...I'll get my coat.
