Why do scientists do this?
Why do they want evidence, have the Bible, deny it, and try to come up with their own evidence?

Tom S. Fox

The bible didn't pass peer-review.

They turned down my book about Santa as proof of flying reindeer too!

LMAO, she picked 'best answer' from a poster named 'Flying Spaghetti Monster'!

"Why do scientists do this?
Why do they want evidence, have the Quran, deny it, and try to come up with their own evidence?"

Fixed with a hammer and some duct tape.

WHY?!

Facepalm time.

12/2/2009 5:50:17 AM

@Tom S. Fox

Yes it didn't pass peer-review... on itself.

Mister Spak

For one thing, evidence allows us to invent computers so we can post evidence on the internet.

Because that's what makes them scientists. They look at the evidence, create a theory, and test said theory. If the theory then is a failure, they move in a different direction.

Fuck it. What's the use? Wallow in your ignorance.

Smilodon

Because evidence trumps a 2000 year old book.

12/2/2009 7:22:43 AM

Clown

Because observing reality today is better evidence than reading 2000-6000 years old observations of other people.

Except that the Bible is the only eyewitness account of the creation and origin of life. Hmm.

The Bible's full of internal contradictions which render it useless as a book or even as a moral guide. Besides, it's been cherry-picked to buggery and back by Christianists so it's been brought into disrepute in terms of its reliability.

Doubting Thomas

Hmm, let me think about this for a second. It's probably because the bible doesn't explain jack except for "Goddidit," which probably doesn't satisfy the minds of curious scientists. Plus it may be that the bible was written by superstitious bronze-age sheepherders who had absolutely no idea what the world/universe was really like, and so made up their own ideas and put them down in a book. Lastly, it's probably because so many things in the bible are demonstrably false. I don't think anyone's ever replicated breeding striped goats by making their parents look at striped sticks.

For one thing, there is no mention of the Schroedinger equation in da babble.

Why do Christians do this?
Why do they want evidence, have thousands of experimentally sound science books, deny them, and try to come up with their own evidence?

"Why do scientists do this?

There's two answers to that question:

1- Facts, backed up with evidence, expands human knowledge. It's the reason why you're living in the clean, modern world you're in today; all mod cons, vehicles to take you from A to B, and so on. If you don't like all the benefits that science has offered to you, go leave all that (even your modern clothing too), and go and live in a cave, wearing only animal furs, shivering (no fire, naughty! Making such is an application of science too). Even that computer you're using, that's as a result of science. Why are you using it?

If scientific advancement, and increased knowledge about our world and the universe it's in also results in your precious Holy Buy-bull being proved wrong, then tough titty, m'dear. That's the way the human advancement biscuit crumbles, I'm afraid.

2- Because they can.

Caustic Gnostic

Because shitty bronze-age slash fiction has limited utility as evidence, except for the hypothesis that they wrote shitty slash fiction back in the bronze age.

[Dude, is that circular logic or wut?]

Zeus Almighty

Why do christians do this?
Why do they want evidence, have the Iliad, deny it and try to come up with their own evidence?

12/2/2009 9:47:21 AM

John

Because the Bible was written by a bunch of bronze age Arab goat herders. The Bible has been interpreted allegorically by mainstream Christians since at least the fourth century, and continues to be so. It's only Baptists (largely a US sect) and a handful of other sects like Jehovah's Witnesses and Adventists who insist on reading the Bible like a science or history book.

Zoo

How many times do we have to tell you people that the Bible isn't reliable "evidence"? Besides, if it was, why is it a bad thing for scientists to come up with independent evidence? This should confirm the Bible. Have you never wondered why it doesn't?

We already tried that once. It wasn't called the Dark Ages because of a lack of sunlight.

GodotIsWaiting4U

Because the Bible is insufficient evidence. It's the same reason you can't have a Zerg rush on a mere 10 minerals; not enough.

BobsOldSocks

"Why do they want evidence, have the Bible, deny it, and try to come up with their own evidence?"

Because the bible is worthless tripe and explains nothing about the natural world, that's why. The only evidence the bible contains is that instead of telling the truth and saying "I don't know", dishonest people will make things up to explain things they don't understand.

12/2/2009 11:07:30 AM

Boy Wonder

Because the Bible doesn't stand up to the standard of evidence on which science is built?

I imagine arguing with this person would be a total stalemate. What's the use? She believes the Bible is all the proof anyone ever needs and there's nothing beyond that.
