@Iosa
"I wonder if this is merely a ploy of the Iranian government to divert the peoples' hatred at something other than themselves."
With the previous protests in that country, coupled with what happened in Tunisia and Egypt, somehow that might give said anti-Islamic Revolution groups the impetus to try again: and succeed..
All it'll take is for the same to happen in Libya, and it'll be what the hawks in the US feared re. Korea, Vietnam etc - a 'Domino Effect' (of Communism) - but in reverse. Middle Eastern peoples rising up to crush their oppressive regimes.
Once Gadaffi has been overthrown (and it's just a matter of time; remember the fall of the USSR & allied countries?), it's time for Iran and Saudi Arabia's leaders to start shitting bricks.
A thought: Should such 'Reverse-Domino effect' come to pass, and we see generally democratic, secular governments in the Middle East, that should piss on the Apocalypse chips of the 'pro-Israel' fundies, eh?!

"It does kind of remind me of a pervert, actually. I'm not sure if my kids will be watching this Olympics. :-("
Or just afraid that USA will get pwned again by China, as per 2008 Beijing, eh dearie?

As in Beijing (and in 1992 Barcelona*), our cyclists shall reign supreme in the Velodrome. Chris Boardman, and Sir Chris Hoy are God!
Or that simply you won't be arsed to have to get up early in the morning to watch the 2012 London Olympics. That's London, and not as in, say New York (whose bid for such games failed**). Yes, it's now we Brits' turn to not have to get up at ungodsly hours of the night/early morning to see events live. If, for example, there's an athletics event at, say, 10 AM (BST); you over there will now have to get up as early as 5 AM - or even 2 AM (UK time) to watch such live! And I very much doubt LOCOG & the IOC are going to listen to any requests by the US networks to reschedule such, just for the sake of their poor viewers, eh?! And why the fuck should they? You get what you're fucking given this time. SUFFER! >:D
*- In the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, on his custom-made Lotus carbon-fibre bike, Chris Boardman didn't just break world records, he completely annihilated them! Previously, other cyclists were lucky to shave off tenths of a second - Chris reduced such by as much as a minute.
**- You lot had them previously in 1984 (Los Angeles) and 1996 (Atlanta). UK? 1948. Wait your fucking turn again. We had to.
