This really is a great example of people using scientific understanding to present some thing as "true" despite the fact that there's no data to support their final explanation of the facts. Arguably better than astrology, which, let's face it -- does a good job of tracking the relative positions of the stars and planets even if they assign a greater meaning that doesn't otherwise have any bearings in fact or objective reality.

Scientists do not say that there are rivers and lakes of flaming hot lava beneath the crust. Beneath the hard crust (the lithosphere) is the
asthenosphere, which extends far deeper than 20 miles. It is hot and plastic; it flows (incredibly slowly) due to convective currents. It is in no way, shape or form comparable to a load of lakes and rivers of lava.
Pendantry alert: molten rock underground is called magma not lava.

Spirits or souls or ghosts or whatever supposedly detach from the body, and thus the brain/nervous system. How can you be tortured in hell if you are no longer capable of feeling pain?

I read a scientific report a few years back by an internationally renowned scientist named Jules Verne. He wrote a detailed account of his scientific expedition to the center of the Earth. He didn't mention anything like what James L. Melton is talking about.
What's wrong?

Ooh, there are several things wrong with this statement. The first and most obvious is that if the Earth's core were hollow, it would collapse under its own gravity. Also, the fact that earthquakes only affect one part of the world and not its antipode prove that the Earth's inner core is completely solid. Secondly, there are several layers of the Earth. The mantle lies between the Earth's crust and the outer core; it is not itself the core. Furthermore, if even half as many people go to hell as fundamentalist Christians claim, then by now there would be no room for any more inmates. It is currently estimated that about one hundred billion humans have ever been alive. Even if we ignore all human history before 6000 years ago, that's still billions upon billions of people.

Astrology could have some merit. Put someone in a blue room they will feel "blue", in a yellow room "Calm". What if astrology works in a similar way, the lights in the sky having an effect on a deeper, more collective and unconscious level of people's psychology, and through the psychology in turn on our behaviors, and hence having a broad impact in everyday life?
The problem with science today is it's lost its imagination. If something doesn't have scientific evidence people's reaction to it is to dismiss it as even being possible, instead of going about running experiments to see if they can gather scientific evidence, or at least keeping an open mind about it and being open to the possibility of evidence surfacing in the future.
When quantum mechanics was first proposed the scientists were accused of pushing superstitious beliefs in magic as science.
The scientific method is to prove things to other people. But people have held it up as such a high standard that people will deny their own personal experiences as being valid if they do not have an understanding of them that can be readily communicated in the language of "science". The inevitable result of this trend continuing is that some of who would be our greatest scientists dismiss the beginnings of what would've been their new great theories and discoveries as just being "nonsense" or "fantasy", at the worst denying their own experiences entirely out of fear of insanity. People have forgotten that it's OK to have one's own little world in this reckless pursuit of trying to eliminate bias, but bias is what makes us humans, what makes us real. Embrace your biases, love your biases!
It seems like science and technology are growing at a rapid rate, but all that will stop and we will plummet into a new dark age if we do not open ourselves up to creativity.

If the earth were as you describe, its mass would be a vanishingly small fraction of what it would need to be in order to be consistent with known, measured gravitational effects, such as the acceleration of falling objects and its orbit about the sun.
