(On an article about Sleep Paralysis)

I'll second that. I know science tries to explain away all supernatural phenomena because they start with the fundamental assumption that reality is bounded by what can be scientifically measured and that there is no such thing as God, devils, etc.

For the last four years, I have unfortunately been under constant attack by demons, especially at night. Though I have never been paralyzed as others here have experienced, I most assuredly have had evil beings enter my room and try to take possession of my body. Sometimes they succeed and the buzzing on my head is so intense that it makes me nauseated. As soon as I awake, I raise my arm to the square and cast them out through the power of Jesus Christ as you have mentioned, and they slowly withdraw.

They generally like to wake me up by creating a wave-like motion on my bed, as if I were sleeping on a water bed (I'm not). There is one really nasty one who has an overpowering sense of evil when he enters my bedroom. I no longer fear them because I know that the name of Christ is more powerful than they are, but they can certainly make it difficult to get a good night's rest.

Don't believe all the hokum about a scientific explanation - in this case the scientists are dead wrong. Evil is real and is gaining greater power as people become less moral.

Who needs science when you have the half-awake nightmares of a dangerously insane lunatic? Hell, with a little ambition this guy could be well on his way to becoming a Prophet.

Reynardine

This isn't funny. What this guy needs to do is see a neurologist. This could be anything from a very serious inner ear disturbance to a brain lesion, and the latter can mimic psychiatric symptoms.

"...because they start with the fundamental assumption that reality is bounded by what can be scientifically measured...."

Well duh, that's how science works.

But don't mind me, go back to babbling about demons.

Yeah, I suffer the same kind of demonic possession. It's called involuntary muscle spasm. It hurts like hell when it contracts my leg muscles.

Science would probably ask why it is that only the religious are affected by such things ?

Hallucinations, extreme anxiety and confusion are normal symptoms of sleep paralysis. Nothing you described will impress anyone who ever had it, it's the typical course. Your brain kept REM sleep on after you regained consciousness. Some neurological conditions make it happen more often, (or plain old sleep deprivation) but isolated occurences happen in almost everybody and mean nothing more than scarier-than-average nightmares.
Unfortunately, while most people take only a few seconds after waking up to realise that it wasn't real, your superstition makes you think it's worth dragging into your waking life.

I get sleep paralysis when I'm extremely stressed and sleep deprived. My dad had sleep paralysis.

It's genetic and caused by stress and poor sleep habits.

With a name like that, I think I'll call Poe as well.

...Because supernatural explanations are totally more reliable... I don't think.

Heck no, believe all the ridiculous twaddle you pull out of your butt instead.

"Reality is bounded by what can be measured"

i like that. if i ever start a business, that's gonna be the slogan

Also: Didnt you put us down for disregarding superstition, then equate science to superstition in order to disregard it?

It's called a migraine. Take some Imitrex and stop imagining things.

There's a reason they're called "spirits".

Hey, Plastic Rory! You're here! Ace!

(Uh, she isn't. While we're making Dr. Who references.)

...what type of business would make sense with a logo like that? Something involving meters...

Also, realguy seems to be suffering mainly from confirmation bias, and an actually perfectly understandable distrust of assertions he doesn't understand from people he does not identify with.

...humans will never be able to live in harmony unless we all voluntarily hack our neural processors with futuretech to adapt them to make judgments based on some kind of superlogic instead of tribal trust-identity structures. (By which I apparently mean become cyborg Vulcans?)

Or we're involuntarily brainwashed. Heh.

Has anyone ever invented a utopia that was both theoretically sound and not creepy as hell?

Um, reality IS bounded by what can be scientifically measured and there is no such thing as God or devils.

I know that the name of Christ is more powerful than they are, but they can certainly make it difficult to get a good night's rest.

Why would a demon pester a God-fearing Christian? I mean, if you wanted to win someone over to your side, would you do it by creeping into their bedroom and disturbing their sleep? And how come Christ isn't protecting you? Did you ever wonder if maybe he's just tired of you being a God-bothering a$shole? Think about it.

Dude, I believe in there being things inexplicable by science. Hell, I believe in angels -- I meditate and I've met my guardian angel while meditating.

But calm the fuck down. If you're so convinced, line your windowframes and doorframes with salt. If the problem persists, no demons; go get a neuro and/or a psych exam. If it stops, well, your demon problem is gone. *shrugs*

And now you know.

Well, I can't sleep at night because of those damn pink unicorns stomping around on the lawn outside all night. Those critters are loud!

Now, I know that science says there are no pink unicorns, but don't believe all the hokum about a scientific explanation, I know they're there.
