This is my problem with higher education. It breeds pride and contempt with the lesser-educated, and makes those who get a degree, that they are more spiritual that the rest.
Indeed, they pick apart Scripture and use it as if its a mere text book and not Holy, living, and active, and SHARP. They dissect God as if He is a specimen under a microscop. Indeed, there is no fear of God in them.

Yes, well that's pretty much what education does to you...though i don't think it prevents you from believeing, it propably makes you realize that scripture has some majorly huge plot holes...as for the fear of god, well, that's just tough.
Yes, we can tell that fundies have a problem with higher education. Anyone who takes the bible literally and thinks it's "living, active, and sharp" is usually not a shining example of mental acuity.
> Indeed, they pick apart Scripture and use it as if its a mere text book and not Holy, living, and active, and SHARP. They dissect God as if He is a specimen under a microscop. Indeed, there is no fear of God in them.
In other words: "Some people have the gall to actually read the Bible and actually think what it says. And do I ever feel stupid for defending all those bad things that obviously are in there. It's better to not read it at all and not question anything and believe the Book has no bad stuff in it at all."
Higher education can, teach you, how, and when, to use a comma.
It breeds pride and contempt with the lesser-educated, and makes those who get a degree, that they are more spiritual that the rest.
Wrong. It does make one much more likely to think cognitively and objectively, though. Sadly (for christianity), once that starts happening the glaring contradictions, shitty superstitious version of 'science' you all do mental gymnastics trying to justify, moral corruption and awful grasp of history the bible contains are too obvious to ignore.
Funny how that works.
"This is my problem with higher education. It breeds pride and contempt with the lesser-educated, and makes those who get a degree, that they are more spiritual that the rest."
More spiritual? Because of a degree?
I'm confused.
"Indeed, they pick apart Scripture and use it as if its a mere text book and not Holy, living, and active, and SHARP. They dissect God as if He is a specimen under a microscop. Indeed, there is no fear of God in them."
Education has that effect. You should try some.
Makes me think of Madeline Kahn's line from "Yellowbeard".
"You'll never get anywhere from books and reading, son. The last time I read book....I was raped. So, let that be a lesson to you."
They dissect God as if He is a specimen under a microscop.Indeed, there is no fear of God in them.
Let's be more accurate: There's no fear of humans who claim to speak for God. They dissect those humans' beliefs about God as if they were a specimen under a microscope.
What's wrong with that? Don't you do the same thing with the other thousands of religions that are different from your own? Or do you accept everything Confucius, Mohammad, Joseph Smith, Charles Taze Russel, Ellen White and Zoroaster said?
You know, I can sympathize with the sentiment in the first couple of sentences. I haven't seen it from both sides, but I noticed many of my peers do look down upon the uneducated with a certain disdain. I know I catch myself doing that sometimes as well, and that's just not right.
That said, if you're going to make a claim as bold as your particular sacred text being a holy and living artifact straight from your deity, you're opening yourself wide open for disagreement and attack from many different angles. If you want to claim the Christian Bible is as you claim it is, you have to prove it to be so, and not simply proclaim it.
I always find anti-intellectualism like this physically sickening.
@ AbsurdONE: Exactly. This individual shows the difference between "uneducated" and "willfully ignorant" perfectly. She wants to be uneducated and ignorant. Hell, she wants everyone to be.
It breeds pride and contempt with the lesser-educated
Fair is fair wouldn't you say? Don't you hold higher education and those who have it with contempt?
Indeed, they pick apart Scripture and use it as if its a mere text book
Not even that, we just call it mythology.
Indeed, there is no fear of God in them.
It's kind of hard to fear something you don't believe in.
You know, Denise, most of the ministers of religion I've known not only have postgraduate degrees but don't think themselves spiritually superior to others. In fact, I've not met anyone who's not a fundamentalist of some sort who believes they are spiritually superior to others.
Indeed, they pick apart Scripture and use it as if its a mere text book
You better steer clear of theologians then, because that's exactly what they do.
Uneducated is different from disobeying the maxim "not to know is bad, not to want to know is worse" as a matter of daily principle.
That said, I feel like she is talking about theology degrees. If so? Anti-intellectualism has hit the crazy boiling point.
"This is my problem with higher education. It breeds pride and contempt with the lesser-educated"
(*Looks down on inferior fundie *)
Not our fault if you lot deliberately make yourselves intellectually lower than those who don't have a problem with education .
...and no, I don't want fries with that, Denise.
"Indeed, they pick apart Scripture and use it as if its a mere text book and not Holy, living, and active, and SHARP. They dissect God as if He is a specimen under a microscop. Indeed, there is no fear of God in them."
Can't fear that which doesn't exist in the first place.
The only 'Spirit' that exists is in the bottles of whisky, gin, vodka, tequila etc I pass in the supermarket whilst on the way to the beer section. Prove me wrong.
You don't even know any people with a good education, do you? They don't think they are "more spiritual than the rest," indeed, they generally lose interest in superstition.
You mean this...

...isn't a book.
Indeed, there is no fear of God in them.
I have more fear of unicorns and leprechauns than I do of your pathetic god.
At least unicorns and leprechauns can be created by genetic engineering (although we're probably centuries away from the technology, but at least they're more plausible than god).
This is my problem with fundies. It breeds pride and contempt for those that do not believe as they do, and makes them feel more spiritual than everyone else, and causes them to vehemently force their fundie beliefs upon everyone else.
This is my problem with higher education. It breeds pride and contempt with the lesser-educated
Wait a minute, (I assume) you say "guns don't kill people, people kill people", but you blame education for "pride and contempt"?
Shouldn't you be saying "higher education doesn't breed pride and contempt with the lesser-educated, the educated do that themselves"?
Actually, my experience is that higher education doesn't breed pride and contempt with the lesser-educated. It breeds contempt with the lazy who refuse to learn and should know better.
Do you know anybody who refuses to learn and should know better? Stop! Don't look in the mirror: that's cheating.
"Indeed, they pick apart Scripture and use it as if its a mere text book and not Holy, living, and active, and SHARP."
You are quite DULL.
