Quote# 93011

First, many Protestants accept divorce in the case of abuse even though no such escape clause exists in the Bible. Some say that it means divorce is okay so long as no remarriage occurs, but that only refers to a legal divorce, not whether or not the abused wife is still married in God’s eyes. In fact, she is still married in God’s eyes, which is why the Bible is so clear that whoever marries a divorcee is committing adultery; you commit adultery when you sleep with someone God does not give you permission to. In cases of extreme physical abuse, then physical separation is entirely reasonable. But even if you obtain a legal divorce, you are not divorced in God’s eyes.

I can't decide who's worse; MRAs or Biblical Womanhooders.

Good thing God is an imaginary boogieman.

1. Get married.
2. Get raped.
3. Get a legal divorce.
4. Remarry.
5. Live happy.
6. Die.
7. Go to hell.

And you people wonder why Christianity is losing adherents.

Aebars: Biblical Womanhooders, because their sole desire is to see that every other woman and girl who ever lives is as enslaved, miserable, self-hating, and deprived of dignity as they are.

Technically correct by the specific wording found in the Bible. And yet another example as to why thinking Christians must be able to differentiate between the words of God and the opinions of the misogynistic, patriarchal Bronze Age men who wrote it down.

Yes, I always refer to backward goat herders from the Bronze Age when it comes to decisions about living in the contemporary world.

If people aren't supposed to get divorced because the bible doesn't bring up divorce, then sunshinemary is going to hell because she used a computer to post this. Last I checked, there were no computers in that fairytale book

"First, many Protestants accept divorce in the case of abuse even though no such escape clause exists in the Bible."

Then it's a good thing the bible has no standing in the American legal system.

"But even if you obtain a legal divorce, you are not divorced in God’s eyes."

Then it's a good thing god has no standing in teh American legal system.

Then to hell with God and all his complicated rules about who's having sex with who and who's married to who. Secular law is the law of the land, and that's what I'll live under, thank you.

I remember a divorced woman who was convinced that it was a sin for her to remarry or have sex with another man as long as her ex-husband was alive. She thought it was OK for him to remarry because that's what the bible says, but a divorced woman couldn't because she'd be committing adultery. Too bad she couldn't free herself from the chains of this belief, even though she was saddened and depressed because she thought she couldn't move on with her life and enter into a new relationship.

I think you've just given me very best refutation to anyone who insists I live my life based on what the bible says.

"But even if you obtain a legal divorce, you are not divorced in God’s eyes."

So, the husband wasn't the only thing that needed ditching then?

sunshinemary, go and read Deuteronomy 22 and 24. Divorce certainly exists in the Bible. That is why Jewish law discusses the procedures for divorce in detail. That's why the Orthodox Church permits divorce as well as Protestants. Maybe the prohibition is not "so clear" after all.

I wonder how many years with an abusive husband it would take to get this woman to change her tune.

God seems far too concerned about what we humans are doing with our sex lives. He should get a hobby.

If humans can understand why an abusive relationship is grounds for divorce and God can't then God is either immoral or a moron. Why is it that every time fundies talk about God they make him look either retarded or malicious?

Look, if my choices are 1. stay with an abuser or 2. commit adultery, then call me Jezebel because there's no way I'm putting up with kind of bullshit. And I don't care what you or sky daddy says.

I would think God cares more about the physical and mental health of His children and is perfectly okay with divorce when abuse is occurring.

Pretty sure steps 6 and 7 are implied after step 5, regardless of how you got to step 5.

Will say, this is why i have trouble with those who take the bible as inerrant. Just too much human meddling even if god inspired it. Inspiration does not give one the details. though divorce is in the bible, i think its just for men.

even if you obtain a legal divorce, you are not divorced in God’s eyes.

Then God's a fucking asshole.

Thank God God doesn't exist.

Sigh, to say citation needed is... well, wrong.

Jesus basically says that there is no such thing as divorce in God's eyes, regardless of what actual Hebrew law said on the subject. Jesus had a tendency to say things like that.

Of course, that doesn't make Jesus or God right...

Yeah, yeah, yeah. She has no right to divorce, but she does have an absolute right to being beaten, degraded and murdered by her husband. Go find an egg and suck it.

Which is why marriage is a civil institution in the U.S., and nobody needs to give a fuck when your god's panties get into a bunch.
