Why not ask his University of Missouri teammates? They've known Michael Sam, and the fact that he's gay, much longer than you have. I don't hear any of them complaining. But I'm not sure I would say you're exactly complaining...
I doubt Mr. Sam will have to try very hard to not get an erection. Like most gay American men he spent six years in middle and high school and went to gym every day. Like me he would have spent those hormone peaked years taking off our clothes and showering with other boys and learning the art of self-control. It really is not that hard.
Today millions of heterosexual teenage boys shower and dress in gym class in view of students they know to be gay and they manage just fine. If those teenagers can manage it then I would be surprised that some 300lb football player making tens of millions of dollars to be there can manage whatever creepy feeling they have about the situation.

I think it's funny how these people are complaining about an openly gay player in American football. You know, the sport where a bunch of large, sweaty guys first huddle up together, then have a guy squat down while another guy puts his hands between his legs, and then they all run into each other and eventually end up in a big pile together. And at the end of the game they all go shower together. But they don't want a gay man to participate.
You seem just a little more concerned about showering with other men, and getting an erection, than I'd think a straight guy would. Just saying...

In my swimming days, I invariably showered with all the other men. It was not a sexual occasion, so no erection.
I go to a gay naturiste beach here in France - no erections on view, and all remain calm and flaccid.
The old canard about the dropping the soap is also very out of date. (When did you last shower with men? Whe did you last shower!?) The normal agent for washing nowadays is shower gel.
