[On atheists]
I find most of them to be unnecessarily confrontational, sanctimoniously arrogant without justification, and rude. Basically the spitting image of the one they unwittingly serve and with whom they will spend an eternity. But I don't mean that in a bad way just a general observation about the character of the American atheist. [emphasis added]

This to me is like, in the words of Eddie Izzard: "Like some ambassador to a foreign country going up and say: 'Hello! Fuck you all! You're all a bunch of bastards! I hate you personally. [to various advisors] So how'd I do? Oh, that bad? Well what part in...Oh the whole thing.'"
There are some atheists who are unnecessarily confrontational, sanctimonious, and rude. There are also quite a few fundies who are the same. Interestingly, I find that this picture applies to a much greater percentage of fundies than atheists (at least in my admittedly limited experience).
"Unnecessarily confrontational, sanctimoniously arrogant without justification, and rude" does describe several atheists, but it also describes quite a few fundies as well. (Doctor Doom comes to mind, for one.)
I think JimB is unnecessarily confrontational, sanctimoniously arrogant without justification, and rude. However, I don't mean that in a bad way, It's just a general observation about the character of JimB.

Maybe American atheists act this way because they are confronted with American Christian fundies who are all paranoid, intellectually-deficient closet-Nazis...but not, you know, in a bad way.
Sounds like most christians I've ever gone head-to-head with. I'd only need to add "blindly ignorant" to the list of "unnecessarily confrontational, sanctimoniously arrogant without justification, and rude".
From England. Reading all this is unbelievable! America is the greatest nation on earth and yet you believe all this crap about gods, superstition and myth. How did you manage to get to the moon and dozens of other things? Most of the pilgim fathers were hoping to escape religious persecution and early presidents were hostile towards religious superstition. You're moving towards a new dark age in America, and your own president at the moment is the biggest argument against "intelligent design" that there could ever be.
Eugene, believe me, plenty of us in the U.S. experience painful humiliation every day that G.W. Bush remains in office, and we are equally pained by the anti-science fervor sweeping the country these days. Yes, we are on the brink of a new dark age, and we have a lot of candle-lighting to do.
