['How would you react if your child came home from the library or bookshop with the sacred texts of a Faith other than your own?']
*Take the books back
*Cancel his library card.
*Ground him.
In that order. Kids are far, far too likely to beleive what they read in these pagan texts to allow them to be exposed to them.

Wow...
I mean, what's CoinGeek going to do when his kid is talking about Greek mythology or the rise of Islam in his history class? If fundies are so nervous about their kids even being exposed to other religions even in an educational manner, then what does that say about them and their faith?

Ah yes, the tried and true tactic of every successful dictatorial ruler. If you restrict the access to information, except your own carefully edited sources of course, it's much easier to control your sheeple.
It's hard to know you're being fed bullshit when you've got nothing to compare it to.

):D Gee, how will you feel, when your kid hears that there's a hypothesis to explain the origins of man, other than evolution? YOU'd probably have a stroke.
):o Moo.

):D Sounds like what the evolutionists do. St. Madalyn forbid that we should allow competing points of view.

<<Aesmael:
But that's only if you have no faith in your religion's ability to stand up to scrutiny. Otherwise why worry?>>
):) Yeah, kind of like evolutionists's lack of faith in evolution to stand up to scrutiny. All the while, they piously complain that it's for the sake of church-state separation. Gee, do you guys ever think about some of the DARNED things that y'all say? The hypocrisy just oozes from this place.
):o Moo.
Longhorn Platinum you obviously have the misconception that you are intelligently informed. I'd love to see what warped sense of evolutionary understanding you have.
If another hypothesis arose that explained origins then its validity would be tested and the hypothosis would then be accepted for further testing or rejected if it couldnt stand on its own merits. Religion has failed testing over and over as a valid explanation to origins. "God did it" offers nothing and works to hide much. A more important factoid is that evolution really doesn't deal with origins, it only deals with how life evolves and mutates as it progresses. But you guys never seem to grasp that small concept.
Your second statement suggests that evolution is only held valid because anything else is rejected out of hand without any examination. I am assuming that you are refering to the court cases that have ruled against ID being a science. Foremost, ID simply cannot compete with evolution because ID is not a science, its at best a theology. Again, ID teaches nothing, discovers nothing, and presents nothing. It is "god did it" all wrapped up in a different shiny package.
Your final statement is simple dellusionment. You refuse to accept that time after time religion only persists because of the impressive ability of humans to reject fact and logic by the sheer will power of "faith". Doesn't matter how many people you got believing something, it still isn't going to make it true. It is very distrubing that people like you cannot see this because your brainwashing runs so deep. Sadly, you wear your stubborness as a badge of honor. You are quite delluded to believe that evolution stands simply because some secret force permits no other challenges towards it. Evolution provides more rational answers to more questions than any other theory or belief, that is why it stands. The beauty of it is that when any portion of it is legitimately challanged and found to be incorrect then the whole system of evolution benifits from the correction and increase in knowledge so that it stands even stronger.
Your religion depends on ignorance and acceptance and nothing more. As time passes by religion only grows weaker because more and more people become educated and cannot accept it in the face of fact.
Scientists just don't think about the DARNED things they say, the test them, retest them, test them under a different set of variables, then test it again. I would have to conclude that there is a preponderance of thinking going on for science.
When was the last time that you learned something that was discovered, tested, and proven? Religious learning comes from contemplation, translation and interpretation. Notice the lack of proof or evidence there?
<<< ):D Gee, how will you feel, when your kid hears that there's a hypothesis to explain the origins of man, other than evolution? YOU'd probably have a stroke. >>>
Most people already know that alternatives exist. Very few who've done any serious research think they offer a better - or even a reasonable - explanation.
<<< Sounds like what the evolutionists do. St. Madalyn forbid that we should allow competing points of view. >>>
Bzzzt! Wrong!
Evolutionists (I hate that word, but I'll use it anyway) try to keep non-science out of science classes because it doesn't belong in science classes. As far as we're concerned, you're welcome to look at it on your own or in a comparative-religions class ... but it ain't science, and it ain't getting taught in science class.
Whenever I see something like what LonghornPlatinum wrote, I have to wonder if it's really due to ignorance, or if the poster is actually being dishonest.
Any thoughts, Longhorn? Are you a liar, or just a fool?
Troll feeding does serve a purpose. First, by not returning to further defend their claims then it only helps to show the weakness in their argument and the weakness in their character. Other readers see this.
Second, other people do read this, some of them actually searching for answers or open to ideas. Trolls give us the ability to answer thier challenges and demonstrate to those other readers that the Troll statements can be refuted.
Spreading knowledge is always a good thing.
Gadren: It says (to me) that that this child will likely deconvert as soon as they're leaving the house. If not, they're likely going to be a paranoid, blame-happy wannabe who resembles those guys who nailed Jesus up on Calvary instead of the "savior" that CoinGeek wants his kids to believe in.

):) That's the standard rationale that I expected. "WE GET TO DECIDE WHAT'S SCIENCE! WE DO! WE DO!! DO YOU HEAR ME???" It's censorship of a view you fear, pure & simple.

<< ):) That's the standard rationale that I expected. "WE GET TO DECIDE WHAT'S SCIENCE! WE DO! WE DO!! DO YOU HEAR ME???" It's censorship of a view you fear, pure & simple. >>
The very short answer is that the scientific community is robust enough to reliably figure out what is science and what isn't science and the courts have consistently trusted the scientific community to do this for itself. I'd say science has a pretty good track record in removing pseudoscience from the field, wouldn't you? So who would you have decide what is science?
Really, "decide" is the wrong word. If it can't fit in the scientific method - if it isn't testable or falsifiable - then it isn't science. It's not usually a difficult distinction to make.
<<< That's the standard rationale that I expected. "WE GET TO DECIDE WHAT'S SCIENCE! WE DO! WE DO!! DO YOU HEAR ME???" It's censorship of a view you fear, pure & simple. >>>
Nope. As a few of the others have so eloquently put it, science manages to police its own. When a scientist spouts bullshit, it's almost always other scientists who discover it and call him out. Science is almost adversarial, in a way - scientists spend a large portion of their time trying to prove others wrong, not in order to discredit each other personally, but in order to further our knowledge. If it holds up to scrutiny, it's probably true (or at least a good starting point). If it doesn't, we look for a better theory.
Oh dear. I've been challenged. I am trembling in my underwear.
In fact, my children will be exposed to a variety of the explanations people have invented over the years.
Evolution has been scrutinised intensely ever since it was proposed. It is not an article of faith to know that all attempts to refute it have thus far failed.
Verily, the seperation of church and state shall be upheld. Hail Eris!
"):D Gee, how will you feel, when your kid hears that there's a hypothesis to explain the origins of man, other than evolution? YOU'd probably have a stroke."
I already know that hypothesis and firmly believe it. The first man came here to forgive our sins. He was sent by His Father when the heavens were crumbling down. He was completely diferent from us and had almighty powers, and had no evil inside him. But the devil tempted him trough the woman, Louis Lane, and then he felt shame of being nude and dressed in blue and red, with his underwear in the outside, and went to Metropolis, where everyone talked the same language until He arrived. After that, the devil managed to change His name from Adam to Superman, and the devil changed his own name to Lex Luthor. Remember the verse: "Ego sum Lex mundi".
Many people have laughed at me for my believes and told me this is only a fantasy, but I always show them irrefutable proofs. All His history is written in sacred comics and even filmed. Every human knows what is written down cannot be false.
I know this doesn't make any sense, but remember He moves in mysterious ways (flying). Just have faith. I, just as you, Longhorn Platinum, await the day His word is teached in public schools, in science classes, because this is also science, no matter what they say. I'd like to see the face of all those atheists when his children tell them the Truth they have learned at school, along with the flying spaghetti monster, Thor (and the avengers) and all the other respectable hypothesis.
May the Father Marlon Brando Bless You.
"That's the standard rationale that I expected. "WE GET TO DECIDE WHAT'S SCIENCE! WE DO! WE DO!! DO YOU HEAR ME???" It's censorship of a view you fear, pure & simple."
OMG OMG OMG, Scientists decide what science is!!! Since when? Isn't that what the politicians do?
"How would you react if your child came home from the library or bookshop with the sacred texts of a Faith other than your own?"
*Read through the books with him.
*Discuss what we read, compare to other religions.
*Go get more books so he can further contrast and compare various religious faiths and then MAKE UP HIS OWN MIND ABOUT WHAT HE WANTS TO BELIEVE LIKE ANY INTELLIGENT PERSON!!!
<<< That's the standard rationale that I expected. "WE GET TO DECIDE WHAT'S SCIENCE! WE DO! WE DO!! DO YOU HEAR ME???" It's censorship of a view you fear, pure & simple. >>>
Oh I see, so by turning Mathematics into a seperate subject from Science at school, we are oppressing mathematicians and censoring their views as well?
I love fundie logic.
Whats the difference between a hyper religious Christian, a hyper religious Jew and a hyper religious Moslem ??
No difference they are all bigoted intolerant pricks, who give religion a bad name with their uneducated hysteria....
Censorship has been the tool of repression through the ages both of religious institution and state; book burnings, intimidation and killing of those with a different view, without fail, show the fear of the perpetrators and their lack of ability to convert others to their views.
Without the ability to learn from ALL the available options both religious and secular we will renter a dark age of fear and dread.
“He is Moslem”, “she is black”, “he is foreign”, "she has a birthmark", “he is left handed”, “he hasn’t got blue eyes and blonde hair”: Ignorance is the greatest gift to the religious fanatic, encouraged and enforced by stifling education and personal growth.
Oh.
My god.
You fuckhead.
My daughter (who is 4) brought home a "Happy Birthday Jesus" coloring book that was crammed down in a grab bag she purchased at Santa's Workshop at school. She didn't have a clue what the coloring book was about, and she didn't get the choice as to whether or not to purchase it (because it was closed up in a bag with other items). I traded her that coloring book for a Princess one. I can't imagine actually *punishing* her for the situation, though. Damn.
Please stop it now. My neighbours have had enough of getting their windows broken by my exploding irony meters.
Seriously, though, I'd be happy and proud if my kid wanted to explore other belief systems. I certainly wouldn't do anything st stop him/her.
When I started learning about Hinduism at school, because we had a large Hindu student population, my conservative Christian mother and atheist father discussed the value of being open to different belief systems at the dinner table. It worked for their marriage, and it works for me.
The world is getting smaller all the time, CoinGreek. You can't stop it, so you better help your child cope with it.
I think she missed a point or two here between the second and third points
* Chew out the librarian for having such a book there.
*petition the city to remove all such books.
*recommend Sarah Palin as commander in chief of all American libraries
I'm sure her fellow ChristianForum posters suggested at least the first two.
['How would I react if I met that twat? ']
*Take his trousers down
*Cut his bollocks off
*Grind them under my heel
And in that order. Then at least CuntGreek would never be able to pollute the gene pool, so he could think he had the right to impede his progeny's educational & personal development.
Confused?
