[Kieth Ellison being sworn in with the Koran]
We should do what Australia did. He is welcome to live here, work here, become a Congressman but he must go by our way of life. We believe in God as a nation and we swear men in by the Bible. We should not change that. Would they use the bible if we wanted to be sworn into office over in Iran/Iraq. not on your life.
We are Americans not Iranians and we live as Americans. We should not change a tradition for another nation. They are working for us now so they should adapt to our way of life not vice-versa.
[Timewarp: This is not, nor ever was, a nation under god. He has every right to be sworn in with any book he wants, or none at all.]
Even at this time you are a minority. The vast majority of America believes in God and if you had a small amount of history you would know that it was also founded on that believe. Your making yourself look ignorant.
No you could say you use your brain. No offesne but TW is just trying to make it look like America was founded by Apes like his ancestors. And he shouldn't take offense to that as that is what he believes.

"We believe in God as a nation and we swear men in by the Bible."
Bzzzzzt, wrong.
"We should not change a tradition for another nation."
Our tradition is not theocracy, dumbass. The USA is a country without a state religion for a reason. Your religion is no more important than any other here. Get used to it.
"Would they use the bible if we wanted to be sworn into office over in Iran/Iraq. not on your life"
Um.... actually, in both Iraq and Iran, it is considered a useless oath if you swear on any book you don't personally believe/have faith in. While Christian and Jewish members of government are in a vast minority, the governments do not require these members to swear on a Koran - they are encouraged to swear by their own holy scriptures, because they recognize the oath would be useless otherwise.
"We believe in God as a nation and we swear men in by the Bible."
What do you use to swear in women, such as our potential next president? Or, are only white, male christians elected to office in that America which exists only in your warped imagination?

Sooo, you're saying you want to turn the nation into the Christian equivalent of Iran? Well, at least you are one fundie who's honest about it.
In a nutshell, do you know what an oath is?. People who are Christians swear UNDER THE BIBLE, because it´s a sacred book for these people. To break an oath is to make a sacriledge. Tell me, if Ellison is muslim, why is he swearing under a book which has little or no value to him?, the degree of reliability for him is as if he was swearing upon Cosmopolitan. In Iran they don´t swear under the Koran, by the way. Only those who are, guess what?, yes, MUSLIMS. There are Christians and Jews, and nobody forces them to. I think you don´t understand the point, so this debate is useless.
Matthew 5: 33 Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: 34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: 35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. 36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. 37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.
US Constitution, Article VI: The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the members of the several state legislatures, and all executive and judicial officers, both of the United States and of the several states, shall be bound by oath or affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.
So you don't know the Bible or the Constitution. You're 0 for 2, ELZ0RR0.
"What did Australia do? Julian?"
We have a somewhat controversial mufti, Sheik Taj el-Din al-Hilaly, who tends to spew shit every time he opens his mouth. For example, he compared scantily clad women to uncovered meat and used that as an excuse for rape. "If you take out uncovered meat and place it outside on the street, or in the garden or in the park, or in the backyard without a cover, and the cats come and eat it ... whose fault is it, the cats' or the uncovered meat? The uncovered meat is the problem. If she was in her room, in her home, in her hijab, no problem would have occurred."
He was then interviewed on an Egyptian TV program and said some rather unflattering things about Australia and its people which prompted several high-profile government ministers (including the prime minister if I remember correctly) to go on national television and tell him if he doesn't like our country or values, he can go home.
This may be of interest.
Another person who missed this little tidbit: Congresspeople aren't sworn in on either a Bible or a Qur'an. They are sworn in en masse; the swearing in with hand on book is done ceremonially, in private, and has nothing to do with their actual oath of office.
Legislators are sworn in as a large group, no one swears on an individual book. If one wishes to hold their own book during the ceremony, they may. Hoover and Pierce were Quakers and did not swear on a book when they became President. Nixon swore on two Bibles so it apparently is no indicator of honesty. And actually some Constitutional experts consider it would be a violation of Article VI of the Constitution to force someone to swear on a Bible. Zorro scores a zero!

And be it in Iran, in Iraq or in the US, ELZ0RR0 is considered an useless oaf.
There was a lot of talk amongs politicians and in op ed pieces about the need to make immigrants (well, Muslim immigrants from Arab countries) more "Australian", whatever the hell that is, keep in mind that this is a young country with a strong history ethnic and cultural diversity.... I'm not sure that it really went anywhere and what with the water crisis and the suburban tragedy that is high interest rates and people borrowing beyond their means it probably faded off into the background. The "immigrant emergency" was mostly driven by those who had an active interest in promoting disharmony : tabloid papers, cheap news shows, MPs in marginal lower middle class seats.
Fuckit, but I hate when people misrepresent the practices of other countries to further their own fucked up opinions. No offense to the Americans here, but it's almost invariably an American who thinks that only Americans have access to the Internet and are as poorly educated about the world as he is. A group opposing gun control a few years back made a video that talked about Australia's gun control laws (which, incidentally, I disagree with - biggest waste of cash/pr wank ever) forcing us all into our homes behind huge outdoor walls with death ray emitting security systems to defend our home and persons. Never mind that Australians who would fall for that security shit are too fucking lazy and broke to actually implement it; if they had the cash they'd buy a big screen tv.
</end of rant>
but he must go by our way of life
We have many ways of life.
We believe in God as a nation
We most certainly do not.
and we swear men in by the Bible
Or by a different holy text of his or her choice. Or by the Constitution.
if you had a small amount of history you would know that it was also founded on that believe. Your making yourself look ignorant.
No, i think "your" the one making himself look ignorant.
Uhhh..I'm australian.
And we dont have to be signed in by any holy scripture.
we're not given the 'so help you god' bit in court cases unless we ask to swear to it.
technically, i could be sworn in on a plushie, considering my proud card-holding furry status.
Confused?
