Well now, it's something of a presumption to think that atheists mainly pick on Christian fundamentalists. You don't know that, and neither do the fundamentalists. However, as it happens, I don't get to hear as much about Buddhists and their attempts to insert themselves in to positions of power to influence society by dragging it down to their level. Same for Hindus, same for Muslims. I don't know much about those religions in any case and their influence on the daily life of the countries where they dominate is probably malevolent.
But I do know about fundies. How do I know? Because they are extremely voluble and generally in your face (and at my door) that it is impossible to avoid them. Even here in the UK and we are much more secular than the USA.
Christian fundamentalism is, I believe, an extremely dangerous movement that given half the chance, would turn the western world in to a theocracy or a fascist state. They readily admit that the majority of them are right-wing extremists, that wish to follow the horrendous biblical texts in a literal fashion. In fact, the world could crumble tomorrow, they wouldn't care as long as they could harass and denigrate homosexuals and people who are involved in abortions. Have you noticed how they are always claiming to be oppressed even when receiving the most trivial of criticism. However, they can oppress whoever they want as often as they want and to whatever degree they want wherever they want. Which was the point of the original shenanigans.
The other great danger with fundamentalism is that it dislikes education unless it's Christian lies. What, people learning about the world and thinking for themselves, oh deary me, no, we can't have that, they might start to question their deceitful pastors and other religious leaders, oh disaster. So to sum up this point, fundies hate education and worship stupidity and take an anti-intellectual stance.
As to your charge of tu-quoque I'll just say the following. I believe that everyone should be happy and should be able to follow the path of their choosing as long as they don't hurt others. That means they should go with whatever their sexual proclivities are even if they are homosexual or bi-sexual. They should follow whatever career path they choose. The should follow whatever religion they choose or none of course if they are atheists. They should avoid violence and aggression and should not be racists, sexist or bigots. Note that my guiding sentiments are the antithesis of those expressed by many fundies. However, if you want to criticise my beliefs, which, by and large, are pretty benign, then by all means do so. Of course, you'll always find me in opposition to bigotry and hatred and stupidity and you, if I disagree with you.
You have to be pretty stupid to think that atheists wouldn't criticise other religions as much as Christian fundamentalism. When the need arises or presents itself, we would and we do. Good grief, have you read some of the quotes just on this site alone. The amount of arrogant stupidity among Christian fundamentalists is staggering. Not only that, their comments are frequently fascistic, and horrific. God damn, don't you even read the damn things?
So I have no compunction in labeling you as a simpleton. Maybe a well-meaning simpleton, since you haven't expressed anything outrageous or nasty. But a simpleton nonetheless.
Lets not forget the fun and humour we have with them. As I've said before it can be depressing dealing with such a bunch of humourless sociopaths. Admittedly, some of the individuals are just morons but it's the underpinning hierarchy that is truly evil. And all over something that doesn't even exist, namely God.
