Career commercial pilots are screened for recklessness and immaturity. Not just anyone becomes a pilot. Nevertheless, qualities involved in risk-taking are needed in an emergency: fearlessness and an ability to act quickly. That risk-taking tendency is an advantage for men. Diligence and conscientiousness don’t matter much in emergencies.
Also, women do not outscore men on the sort of mechanical diligence involved in the operation of machinery. If so, then women would be better car mechanics and engineers. The truth is, men are more highly motivated than women to work with machinery. After all, airplanes were conceived, developed and built by men. Are you telling me women are better equipped to fly machines they never could have built? I’ve never met a single little girl who was fascinated with planes as machines. I have met quite a few little boys who were. Which brings us to yet another reason why women shouldn’t be pilots. Men are avid about flying. And the field is infused with a masculine esprit de corps. If that is destroyed, it should be of necessity, not simply for the gratification of a few.

And you've met every little girl that's ever existed or ever will exist? Just because YOU haven't met them means they couldn't possibly exist? Do you think that might have anything at all to do with many mothers having them play with dolls and kitchen sets?
Men are advantaged in an emergency? So, why are women often in charge of raising children, again?
Operation of machinery? You mean like washing machines, hot ovens, stoves, sewing machines?
Men are often raised with an expectancy of liking mechanics and engines...
Ever heard about Amelia Earhart?
Most pilots could never build a plane!
SOME men are avid about flying, other men are avid about cooking or gardening.

You are aware that Hap Arnold, who commanded the US Army Air Forces in World War II, said of the Women's Airforce Service Pilots, "Now, in 1944, it is on the record that women can fly as well as men."
Who am I going to believe about suitability to fly? Laura Wood or Hap Arnold?

Seriously? You're joking, right? Pilots are trained to follow a checklist of procedures during an in-flight emergency. Taking risks and not using diligence is something which would be detrimental and would help the pilot fly all the way to the scene of the crash.

Again, are you serious? I guess you've never heard of Rosie the Riveter. And I'm willing to bet solid money that aircraft factories have women working in them today.

OK, now I'm convinced your name is really Larry Wood.
I have flown radio control planes for more than 40 years. Recently, I have been flying electric models at a local park. I often end up with a bunch of kids watching me fly and I can detect no particular difference in their enthusiasm based on gender. One little girl, in particular, is my biggest fan. She absolutely devours any and all information about airplanes and she is delighted when I let her move the sticks on the transmitter so she can watch "the back end wiggle".
Also. Look up Jacqueline Cochran.
If women can't build planes then who the fuck built all the planes we used in WWII? Did the men hop back and forth between the factories and the European battlefields to supply themselves in your deranged fantasy world? Sure, there were probably men that stayed here and built planes but most of the work for supplying the war effort was being done by women since women were not often allowed in the military.

You're fucking with us, right? Who the hell wants a risky commercial pilot? Any airline that uses that as a criterion is going to cause deaths and get sued out of business. Most airlines have an insanely long checklist just to be able to take off and a long checklist if anything goes wrong. You think they'll hand over their multi-million dollar machines and their potential returning customers to some moron who wants to show what a badass he is by flaunting safety precautions?

I would think Patty would like a word with you... Can you say THREE US National Aerobatics Championships? First woman to win the US National Aerobatic Championship? Against MEN? Gold, silver, and bronze medals on the US Aerobatic Team? Flies multiple classes of airplanes (high-performance planes like the Extra 300 at Championship level) and helicopters. Her Extra 260 is on display next to Amelia Earhart's Lockheed Vega at the National Air and Space Museum. Ever see Patty fly her Extra 300?
Patty Wagstaff
Watch this and I dare you to question her "operation of machinery" skills...
Yes there are things they males tend to be more interested in and there are things that females tend to be more interested in. No one denies this. Males do tend to be more interested and handy with machines and at fixing things. However while that's the norm it does not mean that there are no talented female mechanics or that a female mechanic should be looked as inferior.
Traditions and norms exist for a reason but when people talk about equality they are not acting as though men and female are equal but that we all have the opportunity. The idea is when that rare mechanically adapt female shows up she is given the same respect as her male counterpart and not seen as inferior because of her gender.
Traditional and normal should not also mean exclusive.
And interesting note...I had a lot of people, including my mom, say I shouldn't play with those things and not go into the military with the job i did because, and I quote(sadly), "That's a boy's job and you'll always be getting dirty." 11 years later I'll never forget that lol.
This might be unrelated, and sound sexist, but I've seen a couple of studies claiming that women are actually better at working under severe stress.
In operating something as complicated as a commercial airplane which has a malfunction, I would imagine the ability to keep calm and try to fix it/compensate for it would be more valuable than bravery and risk -taking.
What is it with all the aeroplanes today?
"Also, women do not outscore men on the sort of mechanical diligence involved in the operation of machinery. If so, then women would be better car mechanics and engineers."
Perhaps I should ask my mother-in-law about that. She worked with engines for a while. (They happened to be the engines that went into the F-16s at the local airbase. And she happened to run the entire engine shop.)
"After all, airplanes were conceived, developed and built by men."
Perhaps more women would have tried building airplanes if there had been a lot less people saying "But you're a woman ! You can't do that!"
"Are you telling me women are better equipped to fly machines they never could have built?"
Who said better? If they can hack it, let them do the job. (Although, I'm sure there are some that are better at flying a plane then I could ever be. I'm not more qualified for any job just because of my genitals.)
You are essentially bemoaning the inclusion of women in piloting and building planes... by highlighting the prior lack of women in those fields,
What a fatuous and unsound argument.
i work in computer technology, a field which certainly is "infused" with a "masculine esprit de corps" if it's anything at all. trust me when i say that quality isn't worth the spit it takes to insult it, and i wish some bright young Ph.D. candidate in the social sciences would write up a dissertation on a reliable way of fixing that gender imbalance among us comp sci geeks.
and what's this about having to know how to build something in order to be allowed to work with it? i know how to program software, configure networks, and administer operating systems, among other technical skills; i haven't a clue how to design a CPU, nor do i need to have one.
no they aren't.
risk takiing is an advantage in an emergency ? I have to disagree on that although it dependss on how you define risk.
diligence and contientiosness dont count ? bullshit !
I have never met a man who was a born mechanic, it is something you learn. cultural expectations have an affect on kids cinduct but I have known several young women who knew more about cars and motorcycles than the men.
Laura , please go bake a cake.
The inability to understand how strong social and even legal pressure was to keep women out of any kind of limelight until the more recent centuries is astounding.
I once heard the musings of a man I forget the name of who wondered how many Stephen Hawkings were ignored in mental asylums or died in working their whole lives in the fields of history. I, in turn, wonder how many brilliant women were cowed and never given the chance to rise to the height of even the most modest notoriety.
Do you have anything else apart from stereotypes?, well, would you mind flying an aeroplane, if you´re so sure?
What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.
If it is not actually a male, it is certainly a decent impression of a pair of knobbly knees and hairy legs teeter tottering about the place in a pair of "too small" high heels, struggling to pilot its own head.
Hey Babe, you sound like a dumbo brain. Are you sure you're not one them there herp-a-derp men?
"Diligence and conscientiousness don’t matter much in emergencies.'
Every firefighter on the planet that reads this will know you're an idiot. A lot of the rest of us know that too.
Congratulations.
If you opened your mouth and let someone blow in your ear, would it make a noise like a conch shell?
You're right, if there's one thing the military hates in a crisis, it's diligence and conscientiousness. Well known for it, that's why they don't train their people.
Diligence and conscientiousness don’t matter much in emergencies.
As a student of cognitive engineering, this is so much steaming horseshit.
"Also, women do not outscore men on the sort of mechanical diligence involved in the operation of machinery."
Elsewhere in the "thinking" housewife:
"He also said woman make very good co-pilots, better than men, because of their high tolerance for tedium"
"I’ve never met a single little girl who was fascinated with planes as machines."
I know one. She went on to complete a Master's degree in engineering, and graduated with honours. Oh, and for her thesis? She designed an aeroplane!
Confused?
