Looking back on my expierences, I have very mixed feelings. Looking at marching bands in secular schools, I see a lot of problems:
Uniforms: often the young ladies are forced to wear pants, or worse! In some cases, the costumes the girls in the color guard (flags, rifles, dance, etc.) are almost non-existant!
Music: almost never is proper for the Christian! Does not praise God!
Dancing: many bands have actions that are downright vulgar. There is one (here in Chrarlotte, NC) that was banned from the Christmas parade becuase their actions were so vulgar that they offended the community. If you know anything about Charlotte, you know that is saying a LOT!
I went to band camp - I know that more than music and marching is practiced or learned! In fact, one of our 'adult' sponsors told us how to sneak out of the dorm we were in w/o setting off an alarm and which bar we could go to!
Now, despite all of these bad things, I firmly believe that everyone should at least try to learn an instrument, but I cannot say that I support a secular school's marching band!

Oh no, secular school. The horrors.
Did it ever dawn on you that secular bands do not specifically play christian music? Or that maybe they accept the fact that women have the right to wear whatever they want just like men do? No? Please go and get your brain checked.
And kids sneaking out of the dorm to get drinks or visit the girls is normal teen behaviour , I'd be more worried if that didn't happen since it's a clear sign that they are either dead or planning something big.
"Uniforms: often the young ladies are forced to wear pants, or worse!"
I wasn't aware pants were sinful. Stop pulling nonsense out of your arse.
"Music: almost never is proper for the Christian! Does not praise God!"
Woop-dee-fucking-doo. Eating toast doesn't praise God either. Do you have a problem with that?
Or maybe you should look at this from a more intelligent perspective, if you must insist that everything praise God: I'm sure God is pretty damn proud of these people using their talent and ability rather than hiding it away because of idiots like you.
Wimmins wearing pantses? This world is going straight to hell and we're paving the way with our non-god music and dancing! Oh the horror, the horror...

Hey bro Randy, take a tip from the gorgeous Willow and stick that flute up your...Mmmmmm Alison Hannigan *drool*
So, according to you, the problem with music is appearance, wellcome to the star system, baby. And just to remind you that there is secular music too, that is played by good Christians because to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and God what belongs to God.
From a proud former pants wearing, flag twirling, 100% female color guard member, I say to thee, Bro Randy, FOAD!
Forget what he said here about marching bands, the thing that is truly depressing to me is, if Bro. Randy lives in Charlotte, NC, I live only an hour's drive away from him. Now, that's scary.
In High School, I was a marching band drum major for one year. I wore a(n ugly) calf-length skirt. No one dressed or danced provocatively, and why the hell does everything secular set you people off?
Needless to say, pants aren't a sin, and who cares what dances/outfits are used,
...but eat counterexample, moron.
I firmly believe that everyone should at least try to learn an instrument
Whilst I believe that you should at least try to learn, period.
yep, definitely a Band Camp Certificate for this one. For walking straight into a pop culture reference without blinking, all hail Bro. Randy!
and, yeh, my band camp experiences were soooooo like that too.
Star Cluster: Well, if he's only an hour away, and he gets TOO insane (... moreso than currently, I mean...), you can help to do something about it...
TDR: Since you seem to understand this pop-culture reference (presumably the phrase "this one time, at band camp..."), would you do me the favor of explaining it? I never went to band camp (though I was in marching bands for 7 years), and I still have never been able to put my finger on the nature of the insinuation in that phrase. And, yes, I am serious.

Bars? Was this college band camp? Because my daughter went to band camp and orchestra camp every summer and all those kids were worried about were their music scholarships to college.
Also, "forced to wear pants?" Some of these kids have pounds of instruments strapped to them. Have you lost your mind thinking they should also be in skirts and have to worry about wind blowing skirts up as they are trying to keep music clipped down and instruments in tow?
Marching bands? High school marching bands are .. dork-sodded?? They've run out of things to find sin in already, haven't they.
I read some of the posts on this subject. A Mrs. Debbie (an adult on a teen site?), proudly stated, "The marching band I enjoy so much is our own Baptist academy's marching band...... The songs they play are chosen by our preacher and our band leader. The girls are dressed very modestly in long skirts."
Long skirts?? Get serious! Does she not realize a boy can hide under one of those???! (/disgusted sarcasm)
Also, the above submission omitted Bro. Randy's opening lines:
"Ok, I was in a marching band through high school...I marched a trumpet. I was saved when I was 22 - long after marching band!"
Personally, I'd like to see Randy march a trumpet, don't you? But he seems to be confessing a sin here, and forgiving himself because since those horrifying days, he's been saved.
What next? The innate evil of the chess club, the debauchery of debating, the soul sucking spelling bee?
The Salvation Army Band for Prudness Award ...
Ah, no wonder I never quite got it; I don't generally go see movies like that (and am not likely to unless at gunpoint).
Thanks for the information; that makes things a little clearer, at least.

Oh, holy mother of christ, NO! Girls wearing PANTS! This has to be the end of the world! Aaaaaaargh!
Music: almost never is proper for the Christian! Does not praise God!
For the love of all that's good, does EVERYTHING in your life has to praise god? This is a marching band. If you want music that praises god then go to your church and hang out there. Moron.
*was in marching band for four years*
*was color guard captain for two; enjoyed wearing little outfits*
*taught rest of band how to booty dance to drumline cadances*
*is just a leeetle pissed off*
Hey, Bro Randy?
SHUT THE FUCK UP. Seriously. Mess with a band geek and you will get large metal things stuck in some very unpleasant places.
Teens 4 Christ, to me, is more frightening than Free Conservatives. These poor kids are never going to have a chance to live outside of the Utopian, hate filled bubble that their parents and pastors have put them in. And it doesn't help matters any that Bro. Randy and his adult admin team are the most bigoted, vicious and ignorant group of douche bags I think I've ever come across in search of fundie quotes.
But, of course, Bro. Randy is such a fine Christian that he drives an hour out of his way and pays .13 more per gallon of gas just to patronise a gas station that does not sell porn, beer, cigarettes or lottery tickets.

Here's some nice pictures of my guitars for Brother Randy:

These kinds of instruments ok with you, Randy?
I'm sure the "worse than pants" refers to baton girls in leotard outfits. What he would prefer is skirts and a good breeze but skirts are not practical for intrument players.
Also the Christian school bands get "ah, is'nt that to bad, at least they tried" and "too bad fundies got no rythm" and "that ones inbreed for sure" and "I feel sorry for the kid with the pipe organ"
As a Christian, I feel I should apologize on behalf of these ridiculously extreme fundamentalists who obviously fail to realize that Romans Ch 14 states we are allowed to do anything secular so long as it's not a sin. Marching bands and girls wearing pants included. I don't know why so many fundies ignore that particular passage as well as many prominent others. It irritates me to no end.
young ladies are forced to wear pants, or worse!
It can be very hard to march on a windy football field in a skirt.
Music: almost never is proper for the Christian! Does not praise God!
Not all music has to praise god. I'm sure god didn't care that my high school band preformed zoot suit riot.
I know that more than music and marching is practiced or learned! In fact, one of our 'adult' sponsors told us how to sneak out of the dorm we were in w/o setting off an alarm and which bar we could go to!
I wasn't aware that making friends and sneaking out like a normal teen was evil.
but I cannot say that I support a secular school's marching band!

Bro Randy doesn't get band geeks, does he? They are not... like us. I dated one. They're rather insular and in-jokey, but genuinely social, and probably having a lot more fun than anyone Randy thinks is worth knowing.
i am still laughing at the music comment
im so sorry for you Ark. fundies give normal christians such as yourself a bad name, which is completely unfair. it is nice to know there are those such as yourself who do understand that if you want to follow the bible, then you must follow all and not pick and choose what suits you. good on you!
To sum up for you...
Uniforms- Women aren't wearing burqas.
Music- May be catchy and enjoyable, which is a sin.
Dancing- All dancing (and body movement in general) is sexually suggestive.
School should be a prudish prison without fun entering the premises.
GOOD GRIEF! GIRLS WEARING PANTS!
Jeez, I can understand rock music, but MARCHING BANDS?
H-has Randy seriously slipped into a realm of unimaginable dementia?
Women in pants? Arrrrrrgh!!! (BTW, what was the "or worse"? I can't help certain images coming to mind at this point.....)
You can always move to Saudi Arabia. The number for their Embassy should be in the phone book. If you can't read, mommy can do it for you - maybe.
My high school marching band was actually good.
national recognition and reputation for l33t skillz. we went to the Gator Bowl, Rose Parade, San Francisco, Disney World etc. looking back, I'm depressed that pretty much everyone at my school was a virgin from overwork/ lack of social life. EVERYONE(asian filled high schools are lol)
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
