Indeed, scientists and college professors all SEEM to be wise, right? I mean, they are educated. They're successful. They're rich. Why wouldn't they be smart?

Perhaps it is because of pride. They are so full of themselves that they can't see the truth. The truth that God really did create this whole world, and that they are totally wrong in rejecting him.

I mean, really, if you are so smart, then tell me what the point of living is? To live a brief life of 70 years, and then pass on?

Why bother living an honest, moral life? Why stay faithful to your spouse?

What's the point?

Why not live like there is no tomorrow? Eat, drink, borrow thousands of dollars in credit card loans, and never pay them back. Why not? Who cares?

There's no heaven. No hell. No God. Right?

The fact that you come in assuming that life must have a point at all is (one of the many places) where you fail. Unless you mean from a purely scientific perspective, in which it would be the passing of your genes onto the next generation. Next.

The banks and credit card companies, who will proceed to destroy any chance of enjoying your life you have if you do so. Doesn't stop some people from doing so anyway, though. There's also basic human empathy and civility for most of us, but those who only behave in a civilized manner because they're afraid of a higher power punishing them if they don't aren't capable of comprehending those.

What does that have to do with being smart? You can be smart and not think life has an intrinsic point.

If heaven is eternal bliss then what's the point of living until you're 70? Eat cheeseburgers every day and drink nothing but soda. And don't brush your teeth or go to the dentist. You'll get up to heaven quicker and conveniently bypass the restriction against suicide.

Furthermore, we often do temporary things. Beauty doesn't last forever. Despite that we wash, adjust our hair, wear flattering clothing, etc. we all get old, we lose our body shape, and we all end up with stretch marks and crow's feet. Despite that we enjoy our beauty while we have it. I play video games. Even a great, long adventure lasts maybe 50 hours. I don't spend the entire time lamenting that it'll be over and thinking how pointless it is to play a game that'll end some day. I just enjoy it while I'm playing it. I'm not greedy enough to expect something fun to last forever and pitch a fit if it doesn't.

Are you really that sad you need a god to give you your own meaning in life?

Because humans are socially complex creatures, being "morally" wrong like killing people, hurting people, doing bad things does not help you live nor does it help the human race.

Oh and cheat on your spouse if you want to, but if you get any type of STD then oh well, again we are socially complex creatures, we aren't the only animal to mate for life.

The point is for YOU to find out, not some Bronze Age book.

The people that loaned you the money do, and they will make your life miserable, you can't just keep borrowing money and live asshat. Even if there is no point in living there is no point in living a miserable life since this may be the only one you got.

Pretty much. Just because you don't like the answer doesn't mean that God is a valid alternative.

If you can't find any answer to these questions other than "Because God doesn't like it," then that's just sad. If the only reason you're not dishonest and don't cheat on your spouse is because of some invisible man in the sky, then you're not a moral person.

Because the way you live has consequences, and I'm not talking about Heaven or Hell, I'm talking about the here and now. And don't you think it's funny that atheists aren't living their lives that way?

You're right. There is no god and there is no point to life.

We're born, and an eye-blink later, we're dead.

Unlike you, however, I can find reasons to help my fellow man and leave this world better than I found it, without having to resort to worn-out mythologies and cosmic dictators.

There is no afterlife, but in a way - in an actual, real sense - we DO live on. We live on through our actions and good deeds, and in the people we choose to help and love every day. Even when my body has rotted away and my name is forgotten (even by my future descendants), the little dents I make on our fucked-up world will be felt, no matter how small in the grand scheme of things they may have been.

That is just ONE reason to live and be a good person, in our nihilistic reality, without purpose or point.

So fuck you and your immorality, Mr. Price. Fuck you for thinking that without purpose, we have no reason to be good people or to hold onto the things that make us human, like altruism. You, and others like you, are what is wrong with this sad world.

'OSAS'. Just four magic little letters that represent an MC Escher-esque multi-dimensional paradox to your argument, never mind the very basis of fundie Christainity's doctrine. And that's before I mention Romans 11:26-32, re. Jews destroying another cornerstone of your 'doctrine': John 14:6.

All Jews - religious or not - bypassing your precious J-boy, and going to Heaven. And all because of their 'Disobedience'.

Well, y'know what is 'Disobedience' too? Atheism and Homosexuality.

The very fact there is no 'God' is the least of your problems II. Seems that ex-long time Christian Jonathan Edwards figured out the 'Mystery of the Bible', thus his recanting of his long-time beliefs and becoming an Atheist. He's had it all worked out, so indeed: There's no heaven. No hell. No God. Right. Just as the rest of we Atheists have been all along.

Sheesh. OK, call me a troll if you want, I no longer care. I had a lot of respect for you guys when you called out the sexists, the racists, and those who use their religion to keep others down. But when you make statements like these, all I can see here is a bunch of atheist fundies shouting back at the Christian fundies. It's just pots and kettles.

Just as those who get quoted state their opinions as if they were proven facts, so do most of the commenters.

And OK I admit I have picked up some of you wrong in the past. I have had arguments here where I misunderstood someone's words... but trolling is not my thing. A spiritual perspective does not necessarily assume knowledge or pretend to have proof. It just requires one to be open. There is more to the Universe than we know at this time... otherwise new discoveries would never be made.

I'm no fan of the Biblical scenario of Heaven and Hell... I'm not a theist, I'm an agnostic. My feeling is that as soon as you adopt a particular belief and make it your stance, you close off the receptiveness to new ideas that did not fit within your worldview.

Because our survival as a species and as a civilization relies on most of us following the laws and rules that it establishes. Morality comes from the fact that we're a social species reliant on the company or at least the assistance of others, so we're kind to them so they'll be kind to us. Don't pay back credit card loans and the civilization's economy suffers.

The point is survival, dear Brian, survival and advancement to the next tier of civilization.

To destroy your argument three ways:

1- Sir Isaac Newton lived 84 years. Not a bad innings for the 17th-18th Century, considering the average lifespan was far shorter than 70 years then. You FAIL.

2- Sir Isaac Newton was a devout Christian. Yet he was a 'fool' for coming up with a mere 'theory' which is now one of the most important aspects of the sciences of Astronomy, and Aeronautics today (Question: would you have preferred it if NASA & it's 'foolish science' had never existed, and the Atheist Soviets had gotten to the Moon first?). Enjoy your paradox, and your FAIL II.

3- Sir Isaac Newton died a virgin. I guess he thought that there were more important things to think about in his life, eh? Newton's name has become immortal. What will you ever account to in your so-called non-'life', Bri? Therefore you FAIL III, and you've struck out.

The reason for living is Living itself, and what you do in between the cord being cut, and carking it. 'Praying to an invisible sky fairy'. Yeah. That's a 'reason', amirite?

At least, when I breathe my last, I can say 'I have lived'.

Your head. Dr. Buzz Aldrin is a Presbyterian Christian. Yet, via the 'foolish' science of the Christian Sir Isaac Newton, he - and several other fellow Apollo astronauts - got the point way beyond what you will ever see.

Dr. Aldrin can say - about his life - he has walked on another world. He can say he has met Optimus Prime. Can you?
