The political strategy of conservatives and Republicans for the last several decades has been purely reactionary -- to wait for leftists in power to screw up, then reap the electoral rewards...But this strategy concedes the agenda to the left. At no time has the right actually been in control of the national agenda in any meaningful sense.
... By failing to form a militant conservative movement, defend bourgeois values, and suppress leftist radicalism, the right has created a monster. The left has already gotten nearly everything it wanted -- abortion, pornography, welfare, homosexual marriage, socialized medicine, a submissive and internationalist foreign policy, out-of-control federal spending, and federal interference in virtually every facet of American life.
... The right's strategy of conceding the national agenda to the left is exceedingly dangerous. The left's solutions to any one of a number of issues on the table -- deficit spending, cap-and-trade, energy security, Iran's nuclear program, illegal immigration -- could deal a mortal blow to the nation.

- Deficit spending: Reagonomics, anyone?
- Energy security: Wishful thinking that crude oil will be there forever is NOT sustainable.
- Illegal immigration: What kind of jobs are the illegal aliens taking away exactly? Cleaning toilets for less than minimum wage, picking fruits all day in direct sun...
to wait for leftists in power to screw up, then reap the electoral rewards.
Thank you for revealing your real agenda. You don't have the interests of the nation in mind. The only thing that matters to radical right-wing conservatives is power.
Left? Does the US have a left? As a European all I see is a right ( democrat ), a far right ( republican ) and an extreme right ( tea party ).
We should know. In Europe we know exactly what right wing nutjobs look like.
There's no militant conservative movement in America? What is this, a message from Bizarro World?
I read the article, and it cheered me up no end. Basically the Prof and his followers don't have one single clue about how to oppose or defeat 'the Left'. The best they could come up with was 'elect Palin'. Tee hee.
Somebody hasn't exactly been paying attention to the last fifty years of political and military history, have they? They must have just gotten the cliff notes version with the underlined header "It's the other guy's fault it went wrong, honest!"
"abortion, <b>pornography</b>, welfare, <b>homosexual marriage</b>, socialized medicine, a submissive and internationalist foreign policy, out-of-control federal spending, and <b>federal interference in virtually every facet of American life</b>"
So you're saying that we need government to regulate who can and can't be married and make sure people don't look at pornography, but governtment shouldn't interfere in our lives?
You don't see a problem with that, do you?
In what universe do you live? The right has not been in control??? Maybe in your little fantasy world, but here in the real world, the right wingnuts have been in control. And they have made quite a mess of things.
Then you complain about "federal interference in virtually every facet of American life" just after wanting to ban abortion and pornography, presumably by an extremely intrusive government, at great cost. Well, which one will it be? The free market isn't going to just give those up. There's a lot of money in porn, which is exactly what the free market is about. And if there was a working Jesus Spell of Porno Binding, you'd have already used it by now.
(Maybe it does exist. It would explain bondage porn.)
This guy isn't a professor. He was, but he was fired. http://www.academia.org/correct-politically-community-college/ . This article claims that he was fired for being a conservative. However, according to the Web of Knowledge (a database of scholarly articles), he has never once been published in a peer-reviewed journal. Nobody could get tenure in the social sciences without being published at least a few times.
Oh, there's also the out of touch with reality thing. #1309791 said it perfectly. There is no powerful left in the US-- only different shades of the right.
At no time has the right actually been in control of the national agenda in any meaningful sense.
Contract with America, anyone? I distinctly remember the Republicans pushing through a lot of legislation quite easily back then. And do you really think that Republicans are going to just end abortion & welfare? It would be political suicide.
What this quote says to me is that conservatives are whining because the country is moving progressively toward the center and isn't the ultra-conservative Christian theocracy that right-wingers wish they could turn the country into.
The right has been in near total control for over thirty years, and THEY are the ones who have gotten nearly everything they wanted: Near total control of the media, with a deregulated, 24/7 Fox lie machine, out-of control spending, left for yet another Democratic preident to clean up, the beginnings of a privatized military, deregulated banking that created worldwide economic chaos, middle class wages that have been frozen since 1978, zero taxes for corporations and billionaires, a destroyed environment, and murdered all but one doctor who would provide life-saving, medically-necessary late-term abortions (and scared the rest of them to the point no others will take on the job). You're living in your own wet dream and you don't even know it.
I suppose it isn't really Nirvana until you actually get to see the poor people dying in the street in front of your house, eh?
No militant conservative movement? What about the tea party (carrying assault rifles to political rallies), right-wing militias, people shooting abortion doctors and bombing clinics, and G.W. Bush starting a couple of wars in the Middle East?
I think the professor has been stuck on Gilligan's Island for way too long.
@ #1309793
Hello, Headache.
The what now? The US left? Non existent!
US have one extreme right wing party - Republicans and one center right wing party - Democrats and no left wing party whatsoever and none of the politics enacted by the Democrats have anything to do with left wing politics - heck, I am a social democrat and the Democratic part is far to the right of us!
So, you want govermental controls on women's health, internet, film and printed materials content, poverty, marriage, medical access and yet, AND YET, you're against governmental interference in the lives of Americans. Hypocrite.
the inverse of what he describes, as already pointed out, is basically what has been happening in this country at least since Reagan. i'm used to outrageous, but this is jaw-dropping.
If the left had its way, then fundies would not be nearly as common as they are. Just saying. The current political situation in America seems to be conservatives getting their way more often than not. Witness the fact that there is still no universal healthcare and gay marriage is still illegal in more than half the country, not to mention the relatively-meteoric rise of the Tea Party movement. Democrats in America are probably the most impotent major political party in the world. (Which is ironic because Democrats actually outnumber Republicans.)
But in any case, I think this is a Poe. "Filozof" looks like a phonetic misspelling of "philosophe ", so I have a feeling that this is a pseudonym.
"...and federal interference in virtually every facet of American life."
I'd like to know what this guy thinks he is talking about. The Patriot Act signed by Bush (who I'm sure he voted for)?
*sigh* If only these people existed in the same reality that we do.
What fucking universe do you live in?
Socialized medicine - in the USA, you have to be kidding me. Not even close.
Welfare - you have the shittiest system of benefits in the industrialized world. Fail again.
Out-of-control federal spending - Blame every single Republican administration for that one since Nixon. The Democrats that have been in power have reigned in government spending but Republicans simply ramped it back up again and aggravated it with tax cuts for the wealthy.
Federal interference - Patriot Act, bitch!
As for abortion and pornography, those are decisions that came down to Constitutional freedoms. If you want to change those, you'll have to revise the Constitution. What the hell, it's only a piece of paper.
"The left has already gotten nearly everything it wanted -- ... out-of-control federal spending ..."
Yeah, I'm sure every liberal wakes up in the morning and says, "Boy, I sure wish the Federal government would spend more money!"
[to wait for leftists in power to screw up, then reap the electoral rewards.]
Like what Bush jr did when he turned Clinton's surplus into a defiect? Oh wait...
[... By failing to form a militant conservative movement...]
Thanks for telling everyone that you have a real agenda. You right to bitch about the make believe gay one has been revoked.
[The left has already gotten nearly everything it wanted -- abortion, pornography, welfare, homosexual marriage, socialized medicine, a submissive and internationalist foreign policy, out-of-control federal spending, and federal interference in virtually every facet of American life. ]
So you're saying that the federal government should ban gay marriage, welfare, abortion, and porn, but they shouldn't be involved in civilians lives? What cracker jack university did you get your degree from sir?
Hear, hear! The American right, by failing to suspend the Constitution (a damn piece of paper) and institute an authoritarian government, has betrayed the Founding Fathers and everything America stands for. Republicans have failed not only to stop unpatriotic and immoral actions but to criminalize unpatriotic and immoral thoughts. Future generations, those that matter anyway, will WEEP that we failed to champion repression, oligarchy, and the Puritan Way.
Italy is doing juuust fine due to the president's ideas of "freedom, the individual, family, enterprise, Italian tradition, Christian tradition and love for weaker people". Oh and strict immigration laws too. (We don't want those dirty foreigners stealing our precious McJobs).
Oh, wait, no. Italy is almost as close to bankruptcy as the company of Monsignor Berlusconi was when he went into politics.
> a submissive and internationalist foreign policy
> illegal immigration
Translation: "It bugs me when the Left wants people to immigrate to the country illegally, and it really bugs me that the Left wants people to immigrate to the country legally ."
Yeah. I get it.
1. Where have you been living for the last 30 years?? A Rock??
2. Where's the socialized medicine at, all I see is that shity excuse of one we got not to long ago, that was the a REPUBLICAN IDEA circa 1996. Remember, when you were all for it back then, cause all it really does is give more customers to the Insurance Companies...
Yes, let us keep all the porn, diplomacy, government safety standards, equality, aid programs, medicine and reproductive rights.
You can't have any!!
lol what a joke, everything he lists was a product of both parties or happened 80 years ago.
socialized medicine? where? what he calls socialized medicine is nothing more than another way for insurance companies to squeeze money out of people.
if we really had what he thinks we do, we wouldn't need insurance companies.
lol i also love how he complains about the feds interfering in every facet of american life, the only difference between him and the people he is attacking is what the fed is interfering in!
if he had his way everything he listed would be outlawed and a bunch of fascist moral laws would be in place for our "own good"
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
