The words "seperation", "church", & "state" are no where in the first amendment. Radical secular-humanist supreme judge turned it into that in the last century. Christianity is why America is so great, from Christianity our American Democracy was born--try to erase that and you've undone what makes us a superpower (you're welcome mouthy, ignorant hippies that one day will wearing burqa's and stoned to death for your beliefs if you don't wise up!)

The exact phrase "separation of church and state" doesn't come from the U.S. Constitution but from Thomas Jefferson's interpretation of it:

"Believing that religion is a matter which lies solely between man and his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legislative powers of government reach actions only, and not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their Legislature should "make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," thus building a wall of separation between Church and State."(Letter to the Danbury Baptists, 1802).

I tend to respect Jefferson's wisdom a lot more than a million fundy moms' "we's dumb."

"Separation of church and state" was a phrase coined by Jefferson to describe the effects of the First Amendment. It's a handy summary of the principle, but has no legal standing. The fact that it isn't in the Constitution is meaningless as far as the law is concerned, because the law is based on the actual language, not Jefferson's "sound-bite".

The Supreme Court has interpreted the "Establishment Clause" to mean that a government action must have a legitimate secular purpose; must not have a primary purpose to advance or inhibit religion; and must not excessively entangle the government with religion. The action must satisfy all three criteria. In addition, it has interpreted the "Free Exercise Clause to mean the government may not put a burden on the practice of someone's religion unless there is a compelling public interest in doing so. This latter rule prevents the government from forbidding people to wear burqas or yarmulkes, for example, but allows it to prevent someone from having sex with children or burning a cross on someone else's lawn and calling it a religious ceremony.

Rayann, is that hoy YOU spell rain? I ask because there is no word I know of like 'seperation'.

I suggest that you read the Treaty of Tripoli, Article 11 to find out exactly how Christian your country is.

Here's a measure of your Christian love:

- You love guns,
- you have the Mafia,
- the KKK,
- Segregation of black American citizens until the 1960s,
- Slavery of blacks until the 1860s,
- A crap health care system
- a crap foreign policy
- the disdain of the rest of the world for Iraq
- Hollywood and Mickey Mouse is culture for so many
- time for all Americans to get an education and learn to spell
- time to learn and absorb what the rest of the world thinks is wrong with America and get the ability to assess this sensibly for where it's right and where it's wrong.

I could go on, but why bother. America has rested on very worthy laurels for far too long: to the point where those laurels are now faded, and being a superpower is now moot. China and Russia are on the rise. Not so America. Time, in fact, to realise that America is no longer the greatest anything. You are on a downward slide unless Americans catch themselves on and realise that the rest of the world is every bit as good - and as bad - as America. Time to take your heads out of the assholes of preachers and religion and fix the country. It needs to be fixed, expecially its economy.

Time for America to move forward, not back to the middle ages. Time to stop the religious rot.

Only in this way will she once again be great.

OH MY GOD IT'S ONE OF THE MILLION MOMS. I RECOGNIZE THAT ORGANIZATION. They're the same One Million Moms who ordered mothers across America to limit their kids' viewings of Miley freaking Cyrus because she supports t3h geyz as a Christian and can't type the word "sex" (or should I say "s*x") without censoring the vowel!!! They provide me with much lulz, I tell ya....

Anyhow. Here they are, rambling on about what is and what is not in the Constitution, and Jesus is always right, and Christianity rulez, and blah blah freaking blah. Easily disproved. Nice change from them rambling on about t3h horrorz of Glee, though.

Actually, I'd say what made you a superpower is large size, plenty of natural resources, and relatively early industrialisation, combined with suffering far less loss of wealth in the two World Wars than the old European imperial powers. Religion and culture had little to do with it.

As other large states such as China catch up in terms of industrial output (and therefore wealth to pay for military might), the US is dominating less and less. Again, this relative decline vis-a-vis other powers is pretty inevitable and nothing to do with culture or religion, just simple demographics and economics.

Don't worry, you'll get used to no longer being the biggest fish in the pond. We had to. (UK).

I'm sorry, I got a little news for ya. You see our "American Democracy" was not born out of Christianity, but out of Free Masonry. It was not the Christian God who so ordained a tyrant to rule over the colonies and whom has spent some 2000 years denying humanity its basic freedoms, but rather 'twas The Great Architect who bestowed upon us these rights that we Americans so cherish. Get that? The Great Architect; not your tyrannical Christian God. Now fuck off.
