Why did Medieval Slave Traders go to Finland?

I honestly wish there was some way to give these edgeasses the actual experience of being a slave. Virtual reality, perhaps, but the whole “I'd be so happy to have lots of sex, even if it was rape,” is nauseating.

Funnily enough, I have never heard of this slave-trade to Finland. Why did they bypass Denmark, Norway and Sweden? Or were the slave-traders coming via Russia?

Finland is not a frozen wasteland (you might be thinking of Greenland and that’s Danish), and ships existed back then.

You forgot “being raped as a sex slave, without any recourse”.

For those who don’t know, yes Finns were taken and sold as slaves. Mostly captured by Rus tribesmen, and Danish and Swedish vikings. Just like every single group in history has been targetted for slavery, quite often by another group they targetted for slavery. Not many were actually moved 1000s of kilometers to be sold, though occasionally one would “get” to travel, either to be added to a distant ruler’s harem for sex or just for show, or because they had some valuable skill that distant rulers were willing to pay a premium for. Most kept for labor (yes, primarily labor) were taken maybe 100 kilometers away, and sold another 200 or so at most away from there. Which, by the way, could easily be 200 kilometers in the opposite direction they were taken to the slave market, which puts them again within 100 kilometers of home.

Amazing how someone can be so right and still be entirely wrong.
