That's the thing with Science Fiction, y'see: as Gene Roddenberry proved with "Star Trek", it has a rather nasty habit of becoming Science Fact.
"2001: A Space Odyssey": 1968. The author of what that film was based on, Arthur C. Clarke: Chief advisor to the project known as Telstar, the first telecommunications satellite six years before that film released a year prior to a certain 'One Small Step'. An article in an electronics hobbyists magazine 17 years previously on the concept of electronic devices placed in orbit to relay radio signals to other parts of the world.
Guess who wrote that article: and what relies on satellites so much 75 years later, grateliar...?!
