[Responding to tweets by William Gillis criticizing Lord of the Rings]

The Death Cult priesthood can't abide the thought of infidels enjoying the works their forefathers created. They hate those venerable authors for being ten times the men the Cultists are. They hate their works for being incomparably better than anything the Cult can produce. And they hate you for not being as petty and miserable as they are.

Most of all, they hate the Christ for being the sole means of salvation, contrary to their debauched pipe dreams.

If Gillis used his intellect instead of making an idol of it, he might realize it's his Cult that's cancelled his shiny, sexy utopia. Men of the West like Tolkien won the World Wars, went to the moon, and invented the internet. The heathens his side is flooding STEM fields with hail from societies that haven't fully mastered indoor plumbing.

Death Cultists are creatures of envy, and their envy fuels their hatred of truth, goodness, and beauty.

Either Brian is cherry picking screencaps to make his opponent look as bad as possible, or that person he is criticizing is an edgy teenager who picked up a cause without understanding it.

But even if the latter is true, this post still makes Brian the bigger asshole.

This reminded me of the question whether the Christian symbol would’ve been a noose or gallows if Jesus had been hanged instead of crucified.

This Gillis isn't the actor; he's an anarchist, and about as nuts as Brian—but in the opposite direction.

Originally, the fish was their symbol; the cross was hideous to them precisely because it reminded them of the Christ’s agony. The Resurrection was the salvific thing, anyway. I’m not sure when the cross became their symbol. Constantine, maybe?

Now; I don’t know who this William Gillis guy is or what he said (and I rarely click the links with the quote source) but… according to Volcheka1, he’s apparently a kook, too and you and him are made for each other.

Huh. Straw men are essentially completely ineffective if you don't bother to name your target. Go figure.

Dunno about the film adaptations of the books by JRR Tolkien, but another that's an all-time favourite of film critic Mark Kermode is the original "The Wicker Man".

And like the character played by Edward Woodward, you should get up close & personal with a strawman.

Be just like William Gillis all you want with that classic film starring the late great Christopher Lee, OP: as for who could be seen as the antagonist in such - as certain people perceive him as being that - it doesn't end well.

Tolkien wrote the Lord of the Rings so his made up languages could have a world to exist in. His religious beliefs were kept in the background for the most part.

Oh, LoTR is too right wing and supports the military-industrial complex. Gillis feels that all science-fiction and fantasy to the right of him should be banned. Him and Brian are made for each other.

Okay, William Gillis is definitely a kook. Talking about conservatives as fake geeks, and the things conservatives use to geek out on … he includes Skyrim. Really? And that he’ll leave conservatives to listen to the last metal albums in existence. He really doesn’t know, does he?

And Brian Niemeier really wants to use Tolkein as his great goto of his Christian heroes to defend because of his literature? Frankly I red those books. Well, most of those books. I couldn’t finish Return of the King, because it seemed a lot like he was losing track of his own train of thought, and it just got boring. The Hobbit was awesome, and the start of the Lord of the Rings was more a grand, and darker, adventure, but later on it seemed much more rambling.

Although I do like David Eddings having described Tolkein as being a devout Christian who in his literature understood that pagans have more fun. Which is why he didn’t shoehorn Christianity into his fantasy works the way other fantasy authors had over the previous century.

From what I gather, the problem with countries that don’t have common indoor plumbing is generally government corruption, not a lack of “mastery”.
