The story started when BBC2 decided to screen the West End 'musical' Jerry Springer the Opera on Saturday 8th January 2005. It is blasphemous (we say how below) and it insults Almighty God, the Lord Jesus Christ and the Christian faith. It also (neat point for human rights aficionados) insults us Christians in our religious beliefs, contrary to Article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights. The Lord God brought 1,500 Christians in protest outside BBC venues all over the United Kingdom on the evening of 8th January in an unprecedented street vigil of prayer and praise to Almighty God. The 400-500 at White City alone prayed for God to have mercy and stop the transmission. By letting it go ahead, it was clear God's heart was for judgment instead. And also, although He could send a York-Minster-style thunderbolt, He is generous enough to involve His people in His triumph, which will come.

Article 9 states:
Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief, in worship, teaching, practice and observance.
Hmm. Can't see anything here about being protected against offence or insult. Newsflash: NO ONE HAS THE 'RIGHT' NOT TO BE OFFENDED. It's a risk you take by living in the Free World, you dimwit.
So, the human rights only exist when they are convenient to you?. You have misread the paragraph. It doesn´t say that any time there is a play or a piece of writing that disagrees with your doctrine should be banned. It says that you are guarantee by law that your right to go to church, express your religious beliefs and the sort is effective. Unless it is insulting(ad hominem I mean)and gratouit, they are not going to move a finger. If it is a problem with theology, solve it yourself.
Wow, that's just all kinds of crazy, isn't it?
Imagine how stale and sterile the world would be if everything that was in any way offensive to some religion was banned. No pork, that offends the Muslims. No beef, that offends the Hindus. No sex, that offends the Quakers. No electricity, that offends the Mennonites. No women in positions of authority, that offends the Mormons. No females in public uncovered, that offends the Shi'ites. No Catholics, that offends the uber-Baptists. No homosexuals, that offends the fundies. No birth control, that offends the Catholics. No non-Japenese, that offends the Shintos. No China, that offends the Tibettan Buddhists. No medicine, that offends the Christian Scinetists. No psychiatry, that offends the Scientologists.
Well, let´s put a futuristic situation. I write a book where I mention something about the holly Spirit, should it be banned, because it offends Christian East Orthodox?, sounds stupid, but that´s the way it is. I mean, this guy saying that because it offends Shiks it offends everybody, sounds ridiculous. If you don´t like it, don´t watch it and tell it to your brothers and sisters in faith. Period.
I like Coffee's idea of a "Spinmaster Award." This would be a great candidate for it:
* The assertion that 1,500 protesters nationwide amounts to anything is absurd, as Coffee points out.
* Article 9 (quoted by Sevagram above) clearly says nothing at all about being protected from "blasphemies" or other insults, despite the implied claims of the poster.
* The assertion that God must have opted for "judgment" since he didn't jam the transmission (false dichotomy) is eminently laughable; the simple fact is that they prayed as hard as they could, and nothing happened. NOTHING. So much for divine wrath!

*Puts on Hat 'O Fundie Logic*
Yes, I see! Few fundies show, pray for the t.v. tower of bable to blow, tower remains erect, ergo god wants to watch Jerry in an Opera, fundies disappointed but tell god they know god's heart, fundies satify themselves with a hopeful future victory.
Yes it all is as clear as .. *stiff godly wind blows hat 'O fundie off head* .. mud.
Aren't there dire punishments of pain and agony dealt out by the loving god awaiting those presumptuous enough to function as god's mouthpiece?
Something happens that fundies like - God did it. Something happens that fundies don't like - Satan did it or God has a secret alternative plan.
To quote Michael McDonald, "what a fool believes, he sees".
Or, have you thought that maybe god didn't act because he doesn't exist?
Oh, wait, that's blasphemy, right?

Urg. I've never seen Jerry Springer (I don't have TV), but isn't that a pretty awful show?
Anyway, onto the fundie.

It also (neat point for human rights aficionados) insults us Christians in our religious beliefs...
What? Dude, there is no "human right" to not be insulted. In fact, we all have a human right to insult you, provided we don't actually cause you any physical harm or damage.
Freedom of speech is one of the most basic human rights there is. If you prevent us from insulting you, you violate our right to speak our minds.
If you're tired of being insulted, I recommend that you grow a thicker skin or adopt some more intelligent beliefs.
...contrary to Article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights.
What?
@European Convention on Human RightsARTICLE 9
1. Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief, in worship, teaching, practice and observance.
2. Freedom to manifest one's religion or beliefs shall be subject only to such limitations as are prescribed by law and are necessary in a democratic society in the interests of public safety, for the protection of public order, health or morals, or the protection of the rights and freedoms of others.
Where do you see anything saying that you are entitled to never be offended or insulted? It just says that you are entitled to believe in and practice your religion, not that you have a "right" to be protected from insults. It just says that you are entitled to practice your religion, provided that you don't infringe on other people's rights.
Speaking of which, you may want to read Article 10, just below.
@European Convention on Human RightsARTICLE 10
1. Everyone has the right to freedom of expression. this right shall include freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart information and ideas without interference by public authority and regardless of frontiers. This article shall not prevent States from requiring the licensing of broadcasting, television or cinema enterprises.
That covers our right to insult you.
The Lord God brought 1,500 Christians in protest outside BBC venues all over the United Kingdom on the evening of 8th January...
Just 1,500? Damn, that's a small number. Are you telling me that God, in all his omnipotence, could only convince the population of two blocks of flats in central London to do this?
Ah, there's the answer to the Problem of Evil! God is omnipotent and all-loving, but he's simply a lazy bastard. He'd end all the suffering, but the recliner is too soft and the Superbowl/World Cup/Test matches are on the telly.
Oh, and how are you so sure that God brought them out? I suspect they went out of their own free will and their own abilities.
...in an unprecedented...
Because it was so small and pitiful?
...street vigil of prayer and praise to Almighty God.
Wait, wait, wait. Are you telling me that you organized all these people so that you could get together and wish that your desires came true? You wanted this show off the air, so you got together so you could want it off the air?
This is too funny! I was laughing that you got so few people, now I'm laughing harder that you got any group of people together just so that you could wish you got your way and praise a magic fairy!
The 400-500 at White City alone prayed for God to have mercy and stop the transmission.
Let me guess. He didn't.
By letting it go ahead...
HA! I knew it!
...it was clear God's heart was for judgment instead.
Ah. Because God didn't give you what you wanted, he's obviously going to punish the people responsible for you not having what you wanted already.
How deluded can you get?
And also, although He could send a York-Minster-style thunderbolt...
Actually, I don't think he can. He would have to exist first.
...He is generous enough to involve His people in His triumph, which will come.
Wait, are you looking forward to watching God torture people? Wait a minute.
[Acme Translator is starting up.]
Machine translations are imperfect. Single-tired-person translations may be equally flawed. Fundiebabble-to-English translator now engaged.
Translation:
I believe that God is going to torture anyone who disagrees with me. I'm looking forward to watching this happen! Of course, I'm one of God's favorite chosen people, so I get to go to Heaven!
Hmm, how many sins did you just commit? There's pride and wrath, of course. You're not really loving your neighbor. If I recall correctly, assuming you know all the details about what God wants and what he's planning is considered a sin. And, of course, you're technically adding to the Bible. That's a sin too.
Oh, and the Bible considers it a horrible sin to be a false prophet !
Or, in other words, you're a massive-level hypocrite. (And, come to think of it, your religion considers that a sin too!)

Exactly. If we abolished everything that offended anyone, there would be nothing left. [/zen]
haha stupid fundies, if something happens it's gawd, if something doesn't happen it's gawd. You can't reason with minds like that, they are immune to common sense.
heeeey, it's not the Quakers who are offended by sex, it was the *Shakers*. I'm Quaker (yes we Friends are still out there) and we're usually pretty liberal about most things, sex included. Specially compared to most other christian denominations.... Probably only the UUs got us beat there!
In example, Quakers have been calling for fair treatment of gays since the 17th century :D
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
